ing members of his party, is now under

dorsements in the latter case coming un
solicited from the most prominent and
influential citisena of the elate. Hun
dreds of the more intelligent peeple of
Oregon have commendably thrown aside
ordinary party bias and enthusiastically
united upon Mr. Caro as the proper man
for that position a man qualified io
every particular, honest beroud the de
gree of doubt and entitled to the honor
without chance ot quesucn.
It is gratifying to reflect that tbe
pioneers who have struggled faithfully,
not for party alone, but lor the promo
tion of all the business elements of the
great state of Oregon, are being remem
bered by thoee in position to extend
favor to those who most deserve it. Mr.
Caro, for instance, located in Roseburg
twenty years ago. Roseburg is one of
the pioneer towns of the state, and Mr.
Caro is one of the pioneer spirits that
gave it municipal organization and m
stilled into it tbe animation of leciti
mate business life. To .his aggressive
energy, coupled witli that oi others, that
inland city's present prosperity and sub
stantial growth aro due.
But Mr. Caro's influence has not
been confined to the promotion of Rose
burg's interests alone. Broad-minded,
far-sighted and progressive, he has al
ways been identified with the leading
interests of tbe state, political, social and
industrial. For many years his counsel
baa been sought by those who knew its
value, and lor as many years be bas
been closely related to the development
of interests to Oregon's mercantile and
industrial progress.
It is especially fitting that Mr. Caro
should now be honored with a respon
sible public position. In tbe official ex
pression of such recognition of party
fealty, personal integrity and sturdiness
of character, as that sought by the
friends of air. Caro, bis party la also
honored.
The News is especially pleated to note
Mr. Caro's promise of success in this ap
plication a gratulation in which it is
joined by all fair-minded and public
spirited men of the state, independent
of party prejudice.
Mr. Caro is a married man, 47 years
old and in the prime of physical and
mental vigor. Personally, be is cheer
ful, open-handed, loyal to his friends, a
patriotic citizen, persistent in his sup
port of the cause of the people and al
ways alert in public as well as in private
matters.
Mr. Simon Caro will make an ideal
custodian of public moneys.

Friday voted a two-mill tax, this amount

at a very beautiful wedding at tbe borne
of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Ilanum. Amos
Howard was married to Miss Rose Black,
J. 8. W, Smith, J. P., officiating. The
bride wore a dainty costume of white
crepe with trimmings of duchess lace and
pale pink satin. Ihe groom wore tho
conventional suit of black, Prince Albert
style. The ceremony waa performed at
2 p. m. The best man Edward Brown
ing, the bridesmaid, Miss Linda Rose.
After tbe usual congratulations we all
repared to the spacious dining room and
partook of a grand wedding dinner. Tbe
menu embraced all the luxuries of the
season. A large concourse ol people en
joyed tbe finest social event of the sea
sou at Placer.
The condition of Mrs. Browning is
much improved and tho attending physi
cians, Drs. Kremer etc Moore, pronouoce
her out of danger.
A fine vein of ore has been struck in
tbe SbeariuKton ledge of Uanum fc
Browning. Placer is certainly tbe ban
ner town of southern Oregon at preterit,
in regard to the richness of the quartz

Roscburgers Abroad.
Eugene Register, Dec. 29th.
. Last evening a very pleacant time waa
had at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lack
ey at their home about two miles west of
Eugene, tbe evening being a surprise
party in honor of Mrs. Lackey's daugh
ter. Miss Iula Bridley and ber friend
Miss Blanche Autenrieth, both of Rose
burg. A crowd of jolly folks left tbe
Hoffman bouse at 7 :30 p. m. in a wagon
ette, arriving at Mr. Lackey's about 8
o'clock, completely surprising tbe guest
of honor. The evening was spent in
playing games of various kinds, progres
sive whist being tbe leading attraction.
An elegant lunch was served during tbe
evening. At the bour of midnight tbe
crowd returned to the city, highly en
tertained with their reflections upon the
pleasant evening so n.uch enjoyed. Tbe
success of tbe event was due to the
efforts and skill of Mies Bradley's sister,
Mrs. Ada B. Millican. The following
were present: Mr. and Mrs. Lackey,
Mr. and Mrs. T. Wilson, Mrs. S. E.
Brown, Mrs. Ella Bency, Mrs. Ada B.
Millican, Misses A. Oaie Walton, Iula
Bradley, Blanche Autenrieth, llattie
Stowell and Messrs. Fred Eisb, E. Rob
erts and L. Uulin.
