OlrU Expect too Much of Young Men "Tho average young man is the agree able fellow who earns enough money to take caro of himself and to put by a lit tle for special occasions," writes Both Aahmoro in tho Juno Ladies' Home Journal. "But he is not a millionaire, and ho is not tho young man drawn by those illustrators who, in black and white, give us so-called society sketches. A comblnstion of foolish influsoces makes tbo girl of today expect entirely too much from tbo young man of today. She reads, or is told, that when a young man is engaged to be married ho sends his fiancee so many pounds of sweets, so many boxes of flowers, as well as all the now books and all tho new music that may appear each week. If there were more honest girls la this world honest in their treatment of young men there would bo a greater number of marriages and fewer tbieves. Yes, I mean exactly what I say. It is tbo ex pectation on tho part of a foolish girl that a man shnuld do mora tbaa bo can hon estly, that has driven many men to lbs penitentiary, and many more to lives o so-called single blessedness." Tbo prospect con sists of a button of gold, a vial of copper, a vial of tin, a vial of telurium, a bar of telurium and some ore. Mr. Cornell es timates that tbe proportion of metal would be : Gold 35 per cent, ton 35 per cent, copper 2 per cent, telurium 10 per cent. He estimates tbe gold at (200 per ton. Tbe value of teinrium he gives at (000 a pound, nearly three times that of gold. Tbo weather bureau's crop report is sued from the Oregon section Isst Mon day speaks in much more t heerlul vein of the outlook than It baa been doing for several weeks. Concerning Western Oregon the Ballet In ssys: lva(ic Tbe week has been show ery, with an excess of cloudy weather jid slightly blgber temperature Showers occurred on every day of the week, the total amount of rain that fell varying from one to two inches. Tbe mean temperature averaged 02 degrees, which Is i degrees blgber then the pre ceding week. The day temperature averageoV 70 degrees, snd tbe night 64 degrees; these are tho normal Jono temperatures. Tbe highest temperature lor the week was 80 degrees at Portland, on Thursday; and the lowest was 62 degress on Tuesday and this morning. Tbe winds bave been light to fresh in force and generally westerly. Crops. That "crops never fall in Ore gon" appears to be again verified, lor tbe rains of the past two weeks bave assured a bountiful harvest. Rain tbe latter part of June is most nnosaal, snd the nnnaual bas occurred this year. Tbe correspondents appear to vie with each other in tbelr expressions of prom ises for excellent crops. Fall and winter sown wheat and oats can not now be In jorsd; barveotiog of them will begin about July lltb, and the reports agree as to an assured good crop, above tbe average, as they say. Tbe rains bave been of tho greatest benefit to the spring sown wheat and oels. The spring grain was sown from April 1st to May 16th, and np to within the past 16 daya little or no rain fell on it ; tbe result was, that there was little growth and very poor prospects. This all now has been changed. The spring grain will make a good crop, as good as was ever obtained Tbe grains delayed baying and some bay was injured by tbe rain, the amount however, was small. Clover and alfalfa that were cut early, have made good growth for tbe second crop. Late hay has been greatly benefitted by the rains. Tbe hay crop will not be ao av erage one, but it will be vastly better than was expected two weeks ago. Haying continues.
