The law requires that each male be tween the ages of 21 and .10 years living within the county shall pay a poll tax of $1 at the time of assessment, and if not so raid to be reported to the sheriff of the county for collection at once. The law allows no exemption for poll tax, ex cept to active members of the Oregon National Guard and all active firemen who have been members of any com pany for one year next preceding the lime cf assessment, and exempt firemen lhat there may be no cause for com plaint I ask that each perron liable to poll tax be prepared to pav the same to the assessor or his deputy at time of making the assessment. I ask the aid of every peiscn within the county that the law mav be strictly complied with. Per sons exempt will be required to show their certificate of exemption. Roseburg, Or., lebruary 13, 1S97. To the Public. I aud my deputies wLl tako th lie to make the a?eef"ment for the year )v'7 about March ljth. We will have field books showing each persons ascs nient and the description of their land as it tow stands on the assessment roll lor the year lSt'0. The land ( f this county has been checked off on township plats, showing that a considerable por tion of the land is not prorerly described being placed in the wrong township, range or section, so that in some cases you are paying taxes on some other per son's land, leaving the taxes on your own unpaid and the land liable to le sold for taxes. In other cases the des cription is so it. definite that it is impos sible to know what land is meant. In checking off the plats of the county there appears to he a considerable portion of the land that is not assessed to any roily. This is also the case in checking off lots and blocks in town property. In other cases I find two individuals both paying taxes on the same property. The law requires that all property laid eft in lots ami blocks le assessed by lot and block unless the same is cancelled on the records of the connty. The law requires each person to make a list of all the property owned by him on tho first day of March subject to taxation includ ing a description ol all real estate, and I ask that each of jou prepare such a list and an accurate description of your land so that when I or my deputies call, you may be prepared to Rive in your proper ty and know it is correct. I would sug gest that you prepare euch a list and leave it w ith some member of your fam ily in case you are going away lrom home so that myself or deputies can have it to use in case we call while you are away. Remember that if we cannot get it from yon, we will have to list your prop erty from the best information we can get, am should we fail to get all of your property and in checking it off on our plats hnd it was not assessed and have to assess it to ''1'nknown Owner," it might cause you much expense and trouble. 3Iyself and deputies will en deavor to make the cost of assessment as low as possible by cleaning up the work as we pass through the territory. In con clusion I would say that tho only snfe way to keep your property f'om being sold for taxes, is for each one to lie sure that all of hie property ' properly des cribed and aeseesed and that his tax re ceipt shows that he has paid the same, A tax receipt is good only on property that lias been assessed. W. K. iiuri r, Assessor, Tax Notice. Notice is hereby given that the assess ment roll for the year iHlMi is now in my bands lor collection. Dated this 10th day of March, A. I)., 18'J7. li. U.
