Annie Berry of Siesous.Cal., who is the guest of Miea Hamilton at Hamil ton Heights, will leave tomorrow even ing forJUiddle, whither she goes to viait her parents, Sir. and Mrs. Kuseell. Mr. and Mrs. Mnrehsll and family re turned Lome last week. We aro pleased to say that their little eon Frank, who was so badly burned during their visit at Kelso, Wash., is getting along nicely, and will soon be well again. Born, at the family home east of Glen dale, Oct. 30th, to Mr. and Mr?. Charles Atwood, a son. Mrs. C. P. Totten of Glenellen and herneice, Miss Clara Beals, of Days Creek have our thanks for a pleasant visit last week. Election day passed by at thi-i place quietly and uneventfully. There were a few who became noisy in the evening who had imbibed too freely of liquid inspirations that was dispensed surrep titiously by some one unknown during the day. General good cheer prevails in this valley oyer the result of the election, and we all look forward to the "good times coming" when Major McKinley will en ter upon his duties as chief magistrate of our nation. Affairs of state will be indeed in safe hands, and we notice with pleasure that loyal democrats are ex pressing their allegience to the new pres ident and to our flag'. All honor to loyal Americans who thus Ijv aside their partisan prejudices acd hail tho choice of the people or our standard bearer. W. L. Plymale. late of the Salem Statesman spent h week at this place visiting friends. It is rumored that Mr. is an agent of the United States in looking after illicit whiskey dealers. We were honored by a visit from Mrs. A. P. Laagenberg of the Cedora, whom we regard as a lady who would dj credit to her rex in filling the highest pljce in the gift of the people. If the electivo franchise should bo granted .to women we would baste a to name Mrs. Langen- berg as oar choice for president, and we are cure she would.fill the position intel lectually and gracefully, and with the statesmanship of a Bismarck or a Salis bury. Miss Nettle lledriold. of Boskydell, is visiting Miss-Helen Smith at Roseburgj and "her absence -is very noticeable to her numerous friends in thiB valley, who hope that her visit may not be a Miss Katie Clark, who has been for some time cashier at Hotel Glenuafe, left for Jacksonville last week where ! Ehe entered St. .Mary's Academy as a student. Miss Katie will take up ooly the studies of vocal aud instrumental music, painting and elocution, and wn feel sure she nillescel in any branch' ehe mar studv. Miss Katie will Le missed very much by her many fiiends here. Last wcet "e made a visit to the saw mill owntd by the Gorsline Brw., where wo found the mill running on schedule time and turning out a splendid article of sugarpine lumber. Everybody seemed to be busy and happy. We had a pleas ant visit with Mr. Gorsline, Sr., as well as Mr. and Mrs. E. Gorsline and Mr. and Mrs. Otis Gorsline. We were the guest of Mrs. Mary WooJ, whose home is near the mill. Also had a pleasant visit with Mrs. C. T. Kail, whose farm adjoins tlw mill property. We thank all cf these friends for an enjoyable visit. P. II. Koberts is visiting relatives at Grants Pass. Mrs. Harvy Eiliff, a well-known pio neer of Southern Oregon, paid us an ap preciated call on Monday. Miss M. Hamilton, Mrs. A. Marshall, Mrs. Berry, Mrs. Hoen aud Mrs. Dock- ham called on us today. Thanks, ladies, conio again. Mollie. The People Voted as Daniel Webster Advised. Sir, the very man of all others who has the deepest interest in a sound cur rency, who Euffra most by mischievous legislation in money matters, is tho man who earns his daily bread by his daily toil. His reliance, his fund, hts productivo fceehold, his all, is hii labor. Whether he works on his own Mimll capital or another's, his liviug is still j earned by his industry ; and w'icn the money ol the country becomes dypieci ated and debased, whether it be adulter ated coiu or paper, without credid, that industry is robbed of its reward. He then labors for a country whoso laws cheat him out of his bread. I would say to every owner of every quarter Eection ol mini in tho west, l would sjv to every man in the east who follows his plow, and lo every mechanic, artisan, and laborer in euery city in the country, I would say to every man, everywhere, who wishes by honest meaua to earn an honest liviug: lie ware of wolves-in shcop's clothing. Brjans, Altgelu's, Joneses, Tillniaue, Debses Whoever attempts, uiidtr whatever popular cry, to shako the stability of the public currency, bring on distress iu money matters, and drive tho country into tho uso of depreciated money Bryan stab3 your interest and your happiness to the heart." Daniel Webster. THE END OF ALTGELD. Altgeld must be convinced now that the voters of Illinois have repudiated him, 50-cent frco pilver, and anarchy by 118,000 mojority. He was unwilling to believe it Tuesday night, but all the hopes he clung to so desperately van ished Wednesday. On the 3d of November the voteis had an opportunity to settle accounts with Altgeld. riiey have besn waiting for it i for some time, and the longer they waited the longer grew the account. The first item .on it was his pardon of the anarchists and his sssault on the state supreme court. The next item was the revolutionary position he took at tho time of the Debs insurrection, when he denounced Cleveland for executing national laws and contended that a gov ernor, was a more important person than a president. It was mortifying for Illi- noisans to feci that they had such a man as their governor. Still another item wa3 his advo?acy of a silver monometallism of 50-cent dol lars, an abhorrent doctrine he bad forced on the democracy of this state. But for him Illinois would not have been for ro-ten money at Chicago, and the democratic convention would not have forced on the country the free silver issue which has been disposed of after so hard a struggle. There were several other items in the account. Illinoisana did not like to see Altgeld asking for their vote3 when se- rions charges had been brought against him by men within his own party and which he did not refute, but attempted to ignore. Accounts are settled noar. The Illi nois voters have spoken their mind fully and plainly about Altgeld. They have turned him out of office atd have con demned his doctrines. Both city and country have repudiated him. Both pre fer to stand by the supreme court, by tne enforcement of the national laws, and by honest money. The coalition of pjpocrats, populists, socialists and anarchists could not eave Altgeld. His indefatigable campaigning could not pull him through. His cow ardly, vindictive assaults on Governor- elect Tanner did him no good. His sham professions of devotion for the worktngmen only fooled a part of them. Altgeld is besten by about 11S.0C0 vote?, and the mischief-making apology for a governor will be succeded by Capt. Tanner, who will not be the lriend and protector of-ric:ers7antf w ho will ad minister efficiently and honestly the public affairs of this great state. Chicago Tribune. Political Leaders Sued. E. J. Kaiser has filed a suit in the jus tice's court for Ashland against W. M. Colvig, M. E. Egglestou, P.obt. Taylor, A. X. Soliss and S. H. Holt, composing the Bryan union executive campaign committee of Jackson county, to recover $30.73, alleged to hi due for la'jor and services rendereJ'during (he months of Septemter aud October in publishing in a newspaper certain matter furnished by the defendants and in circulating the same, and in printing hand bills and posters, "all of the reasonable value of $36.73," which defendants agreed to pay on or before Oct. 31, 1S90. The case is set to come up for hearing before Justice Hammond on Wednesday, at 10 o'clock. Just what prompted the filing of the suit is not known. The parties defen dant are all prominent Ilrvaa leaders in the county and have a pretty good record for paying their bills promptly, aud certainly are not in the habit of having claims against them collected through the courts, Ashland Tidings. Too Many Illiterates. MoNTiiOMEiiY, Ala., Nov. 11. Cover nor Oates, in his message to the legisla ture, which convened tcdav, declared against the Australian ballot svstetu. He tins: "This law has been pretly thoroughly tried in two state elections, this sys tem may be a good one m states where there are many intelligent voters, .who aro employed by great corporations, and want some protection against the dicta ticn of their eaiplovers. lint iu Ala bama we are differently situated. A comparatively small percentage ol our roting population is thus employed, and there is more illiteracy among them, aud hence a more open aud simple sys tem of voting would be more acceptable to the voters at large. The old law, which the present one has superseded with a few amendments, would be preferable to the present one." Commended by Bryan. I'AKKEKsncitii, W. V:t., Nov. 12. Dr, M. S. Holt, of Weston, has received from Hon. W. J. 15ryau a lottor approv ing tho work which Dr. Holt began of organizing permanent silver clubs in this state, preparatory lo the campaign four years hence. Alter Bryan a defeat, Dr. Uolt organ' ued a eilver club at Weston, with lis members, and the club sent a letter to tho defeated cauuulate. me letter re ceived by Dr. Holt, who is president of tho club, is in acknowledgment of the elub'u greetings.
