anu Lieutenant Velsco, cf tho iosnr

Cuba with important dispatches hem
General Gomes for the Cuban junta.
Delgado and Velasco, accompanied by a
ski'lfcl bcaSraan, reached Mariel Friday
nicht, where they were to take a boat j
for Key West. While tbey were on the
beach preparing to. launch their Loat,
they were discovered by four Spanish
soldiers, and a hand-to-hand tiht fol
lowed. Ddgsdoand Velasco nsed their
macbeios with deadly effect, kill'n the
four soldiers.
Saturday morning their boat sprung a
leak, and was about to sink when a Nor
wegian bark rescued them. The lark
brought them within 50 miles cf Key
West, wh?n they again took to their
loat, which bad been repaired. When
within 23 miles of Key West, last even
ing, they were picked up by the piict
boat Glance, which brongbt them in.
Delgado says battles are being fongbt
dally in Pimr del Rio, and that the in
surgents are nearly always victorious.
He says that Maceo holds all the prov
inces saye the capital city, and is Le
leagusring that. Lieutenant Velaeco is
a member of General Zaya's itaff, and
says the report o! that o Seers death is a
falsehood.

Senator Woicott's open letter to the
people of Colorado ia a manly proclama
tion of a manly man. He does col pre
tend to believe or cay that the republi
can party's platform goes far esooh in
the direction of e&abli&bini: bimetallism
in tbe United States, but be realizes
that whatever legislation is required to
remccetize silver and to improve the
ocditioa of the business interests of tbe
country must come from a republican
administration. Senator Wolcolt hon
estiy believes the republican party
could brin,; about bimetallism in this
country independent of other nations,
bnt he docs not believe the democratic
party could do it under any circum
sUncrf?, and hence it is better to first
attempt international bimetallism than
tj prejudice the' cause of bimetallism
by lnir'njimjf it to the democracy. In
every attempt at ec03am:c and financial
ltrgielatioa the democracy na3 failed ut
terly trm-i far, and that, too, when its
ablest men were at tue helm. It cer
tainly follows then that the inexpen-en.-eJ
and visionary men of the party
woUr commit eveu greater bluadcra.
Senator SVulcot'. bslievej that the sil
ver declaration of the Chiciga platform j
is in line with what this country nbonld
du, t.nt as every other plitik is hostile
to our S)S-m ol government be feels it
to L-e the wiser cuonw to work for bime
tallism uh,the plai proposed by tbe re
publican party than to take any chances
cf letting Aligeldism prevail. Mr. Wol
cott, like thousands of other republicans,
knows that the silver question is not tho
only issue before the country, and he
does not hesitate to eay tnat even coald
bimetallism be secured under a demo
cratic administration it would avail the
country r,oihing because of tbe most
hurtfol legislation iu other directions
that would be dure to follow.
Bimetallism is preatly to be desired,
Senator Wolcott thinks, but it is not to
be desired in company with communis
tic legi'ltfion and the degradation of
the Federal'Supreme Coart. We want
'bimetallism, the "Colorado Senator be
lieves, but we do not want it at the ex
pense pi tbet p8?c principles of tho government.-
