NotwithgUadiug the hard times, Douglas county is forging ahead. Her natural resources, though Elowly, are Earely coaling into promicent notice. Our agricultural resources are good, our fruit products are being dtvelopcd with amazing progress, and our mineral deposits are almost unlimited; all of which are attracting notice. The latest evidence of our mineral wealth is the certificate of experts as to the quality of Douglas county marble. Our townsman W. G. Woodward bis just received a bronze me lal from the World's Columbian Exposition at Chi cago for a specimen of marble from the 'Variety Marble Company," awarded " for its fceiuty and quality." The medal is about three mchts in diameter, wrought in the bighett ;degree of art. The obrerse side is a ecroll sur mounted by a figure of the earth with an acgelic figure of a woman on either side, one with a block of wrought marble in in her hand, the other with a trumpet heralding glad tidings of human prog ress. The reverse side is the figure cf Columbus landing. This beautifal bronze medal is inclosed in'an aluminum case. Accompanying the medal is a diploma signed by the committee of award and the high officials of the exposition, certi fying that it is "awarded for the beauty of marble from one of the most impor tant quarriee in the country." This modal, while ya luable in itself as a sou venir, is most highly prized as getting forth the fact that this Douglas county marble is from one of ttie mot ijriant quarries of the country. This specimen is from the Variety Marble Couipmy of Douglas county about 12 miles east of this city and was brought to notice through tho injrsever ing.enterpnse of .Mr. W. G. WcoJward of this city. A Cyclone Cursed Country. The Chicago Tribune commenting up on tho late destructive tornadoes which have viiited the Mississippi valley stales, eaye: "The premature spring of 15'JG, which has advanced everything a month ahead of its time, has done the same unpleas ant office for windstorms, cloudbursts, and lightning.
