Richardson of Koseburg was in town Tuetday extoling tho fine qualities of tho Cresent Bicycle. Miss Jessie Ohmart left Friday morn ing for Yaquioa where she will remain with relatives for some time. Mr. L. McFarland returned home Weduesday. He says Mrs. McFarland is improving slowly tince she left Port land. Luther, brother of S. 0. Emery, who has been visiting here left for his home in Kansas last Wednesday. E. G. Young & Co. shipped two car loads of cattle to Portland Sunday. James Young went in charge of the stock. Mrs. Geo. Settle speut several days in Yoncalla last week looking after the in terests of the millinery business. Several of our town box a went to a dance at Xonpariel Friday niht which was very well attended considering the state of the weather. The Populist speaker Harry Watkins spoe at Yoang'a Hall Monday evening of last week. Harry teemed to amuje his hearers if he did nothing else. Mrs. J. H. Dearmin who has been visiting relatives here for some time ex pects to leavo Moaday the 4tb icst. for her home ir. Baker City, Or. Kev. H. S. Shangle came in from his mountain home Saturday and held ser vices at the Picjbyterian church Sunday morning and evening. C. H. Medley is now prepared to furn ish soda water from his new fountain. The Monitor Cbrrstal Spa. Charley baa jusi received it from John Matthews of New York. Mrs. Humphrey and Howard Smith of Marion County came up recently to see their father V. R. Smith who is quite sick. Mr. F. Humphrey came in company with them to visit friends. Douglas, youngest sen of J. U. Ma hoaey, is very low with typhoid fever and heart trouble which makes a very complicated case. It la hoped he will survive the ordeal and be around with his playmates in the near fntnre. Mrs. A. D. Uawn of whom we spoke in our last report as beins ill, has been in a very critical condition lately. Dr. Gilmore who is attending her thinks there is a turn for the better and with good care she will survive the severe trials she has had to pass through. We hope she will be restored to her family in her usual good health ere long. Teilby. CALAPOOIA. Rain, rain, when will it stop. Crops in this part look yellow, on the account of so much rain. The cherry crop and the prunes are all killed by the frost in this -section of the country. C. A. McGee of West Rosebud is spending a few days with his many mends on the Calapooia. Chas. says the A. P. A's. are all right. Miss Alice Bishop of your city is visit ing her parental home on the Calapooia. II. waers a smile. C. A. 3IcXabb attended the Sunday School last Sunday. What is going to happen. R. O. Lehman can find his roos'er in Green Valley. He is organizing a people's parly club there. A. B. Handen bought a fine lot of hogs of J. A. Cole. 3Ir. Handen will fatten a big lot of porkers this fall. The basket dinner of three parties on the Green Valley Creek, April 24th, was a grand success, eo says Herbert. C. A. 3IcNabb is buying cattle for E. G. Young & Co. C. A. is a rustler. There will be a box supper at the Cala pooia school house, Saturday night, May Jth, for the benefit of the Sunday School. The young ladies will insure a good lime and well filled boxes. That would be a good place for some of our candidates to drop in and help the good work logo on. Irvy Goff was seen in our valley last Sunday. The attraction was not very great. O. P. " Antl-A. P. A. Meeting. At a called meeting of the citizens of Coles Valley at the Coles Valley school house on May 3J, there were quite a number of voters present and the follow ing business was transacted. L. T. Thompson was chosen chairman and O. I. Hittle, eecretary- Tho chairman on taking his seat fctated the object of the meeting being to take in consideration the best plan to defeat that organization known as the American Protective Association and to ascertain which of the candidates be long to the said A. P. A., and wo be lieve that the said A. P. A. will do all in their power to elect their candidates. We think it is best for all true Ameri can citizens, irrespective of 'party to unite on one set of candidates outside of the order and cast a solid vote for them. There were soveral short speeches made and papers read ; one by II. Dcar dorff which would convince any man that the A. P. A.s arc a political organi zation pure and simple, (more simple than pure.; Tho secretary was instructed to fcond a copy Jo" tho proceeding to both Rcseburg papers. It was resolved to continue Iho meet ings in different parts of tho county and hold them with open doors; invito all to attend, be they A. P. A. or anti-A. P. A. Last Sunday afternoon the local trap shooters of tho city congregated at tne shooting grouuds in Uncle Aaron Roses' field adjoining tho city limits nnd amidst a drizzling rain and a howling wind, immediately proceeded to break all the blue rocks in the basket, the principle weapons used being shotguns and clubs. The first shr-ot was at 25 single birda, the score resulting as follows : Parks 12 Sykes 7 Kidder 9 Cathcart : 0 Matthews 10 Sanctuary 7 Strong G Perry 1 Cannon S Tolles H Miller 13 Tho next on thu programme was a special shoot at rive single birds theie being eeven entries and resulted as fol lows : Tollcs 2 Parks 3 Matthews -1 Tynan 0 Casey ,. . .0 Cathcart 0 Caunon 3 The next was a special match at ten birds for blood and a thousand acre of wild turleya in Montana, between Cath cart and Cannon. Cathcart was the first to toe the mark and with a smile of confidence upon his face proceeded to kill two out of his first five. Cannon equaled his score and went him two better killing four. As Cathcart next teed the mark it was noticed he was a shade paler than when he entered the conte3. He however succeeded in kill ing two more out of his last five and Cannon iloios the rame secured the tur key ranch.
