For State Senator, A. W. REED. For Representatives, J. T. BRIDGES. A. M. CRAWFORD. GEO. W. RIDDLE. For Clerk, J. H. SHUPE. For Slreriff, D. R. SHAMBROOK. For Treasurer. W. A. FRATER. For Aeeor, W. S. BRUT. For Commissioner, M. D. THOMPSON. For School Superintendent, O. C. BROWS. For Surveyor, W. P HEYDON. For Coroner, K. L MILLER. THE TICKET. For county clerk Hun. J. II. Shupe was nominated. Mr. r-hape. ie-an old citizen of Douglas and is jo well known that anything commendable by ui would be superfluous. He his been state sen ator and register of the United States land office in this dtv and will be the nest otunty clerk of Ianglas county, David It Shambrook, deputy under Sheriff C. F. Cathcart, has been norni nated for sheriff. Mr. Sbambrofk i Douglas county boy, born and reared in Coles Valley, and is identified with th material interest of the county. Young, energetic and attentive to business, and if elected and he will be will make a good sheriff. "W. A Frater, the prccent incumbent has been renominated for county treas nrex. Mr. Frater has londucted the business oi the office so fatisfactorily since he took charge of the office that be was unmimoaslv proclaimed the choice of the convention for re-election. W. S. Britt of Riddle was named for assessor. Mr. Rritt is a man of middle age, of ripe experience in business, Rood judge of property, able, conscien tious and faithful in the discharge of his known duties. He is now a farmer and feeis the great necessity of equlization of taiiurthens. The convention did well in placing the name of M. D. Thompson on the ticket for county commissioner. Mr. Thomp son is a man of ripe age for active busi ness, such as 'ji required to look after and guard the peoples' financial affair ana suit oroaa minaed enoagn to per' ceivi opportunities for improving the cour.ty's condition, and backbone enough to stand for the right. Hon O. C. Bruwb, a young man considerable weperience as a teacher of in our (uoiic scbools, is namrl tor county school superintendent. Mr. Brown si.nd high as a teacher, holding a life diploma. He has taught in the public schools of this countv for ten years and is one of our best educators. . V. Heyuon, the present county Eurvmor, ha been named to euccecd himse'f as h- wil is a man paat mid dl- aite, but is full of viril vigor yet and will devote to th office his best efforts to do gooJ and efficient work. Honest able and faithful in the future as in the past, we commend him to tho voters next Juno for their endorsement, as they UOUbtlCiS will" Now we come to the finale of a county ticket, the coroner; a poeitton few men asj ire to as there is "nothing in it" in llnancial way. It is an important post lion none- the as tho coroner takes the place of a sheriff in ccriaiii contin gencies. Tho convention placed Dr. K L. Miller, tho present incumbent, on tho ticket for this office. He has eatifactor ily performed his duties .during the past two yeais and will do eo two years longer. Wo do not as a rule refer to the claim of candidates before the convention wh failed iu tccuriug the nomination, ulw-3v deferring our iudividual judgment to tho concurring opinions of tho many, i But in the case f Mr. Cathcart who failed in securing the nomination for thciiff, though o.-eeesiiig an aeknow - lodged high order of ability, a train of unlortunato rircunistancca culminated in causinc his defeat, viz: the escape of &tui Brown from jail twice whilo Mr. 'athcart was sheriff. The first eacapo as through the negligence of a deputy. Air. Cathcart being in no wise responsible. Tho second escapo as effected by a damnable conspiracy of a large number of Brown's friends, as the trial of the l'ools ehowed. Brown was furnished by outsiders with Iho means of escapo and after his escapo ho was secreted and spirited away by his friends, who kept watch of tho sheriff and posse and kept him posted as to their movements. Whilo tho Review has been working ith might and main to secure Mr. Cathcart's nomination, it has been manufatcuring political thuuder to hurl at him, and had he been nominated, the Kcview would then have unlimbered its masked lattery upon him- And now that Mr. Shambrook, his deputy, has secured tho nomination, tho Heview will t irn its bitteries today upon him, and deal out hypocritical and fulsome praise of Mr. Cathcart. Mark our pre- iclions. HERMANN'S OPPONENTS. The opponents of Mr. Hermann are reduced to great straits when thoy re sort to garbling his dispatches and mak- iug them say what ho did not say, while at his post of dutv, and thus in his ab sence traduce him for tho purpose ot get ting his place. Tho following dispatches from Mr. Hermann hhow to what false hoods they will descend to make a point: Washington, D. C, S:30 A. M., March 22. 1S96. Hon. F. M, Wilkins, Eocene, Or.. I bac secured a large al lowance for the Siuslaw jetty work. An early adjournment of congress is assuted and will make money for the appropria tion available at an early date, which will make it possible to resume work on tho jetty in the near future. Uixokk Hermann. Wamiingtox. D. C. 0:11 A. M.. March 25. IS9C To Hon. F. M. Wilkins, Eugene, Or. : 1 have succeeded in se curing the great project fur immediately and permanently improving the Willam ette river from Eugene to Portland. The mprovement work will be contracted. Uingeu Hlkmanx. Mark you, Mr. Hermann does not cay ; has had the bill pissed. He says in the dispatch dated March 25th: "I have succeeded in securing the great pro ject for immediately and permanently impicving the Willamette river from Eugene to Portland." 'In tho dispatch dated March 22d he says: "I have se cured a large allowance for Siu;law jetty work." Asa member of tho river and harbor I committee he had secured the placitig iu the river and harbor bill the needed ap-1 propriations, and so wired Mr. Wilkins. j One D. 31. C. Gaulf, who is a tool in the ' hands of his bcs, aked Senator Mc- i Bride if such a toll had been passed ap- j preprinting money for the purposes! named. McBride replied on April 1st, that no such bill had patud the house, but that the committee report was "expected this week." The report was tent to the ; bouse April 3d, and verifies Hermann's ' telegrams to Wilkins in every particular, j and wiil doubtless be passed in due time, j This attempt on the part of the Oregon- ian and the valley papers to convict Hermann of sending out false dispatches to deceive the people, fails to accomplish its purpose, for the bill is now before the house, and exposes i be trick, and likewise the imfamy of the schemers. FAIR DEALING. If there is any out- t .ag that an hon est man admires above another in poli tics it is fairdeal.ug. Trickincss is dis- pised by every man who has any nobil ity in bis make up. The Plaindealeb most emphatically condemns this con temptible trickery. Sooner or later it will become known and the trickster will become an object of contempt. At the democratic primaries Saturday prommont democrats of long years of loyalty to the party, men of honesty and sterling integrity informed us that the men who have been bossing party norni-! nations for years, were at their old job, and that through trickery and party bulldozing bad deprived many democrats favoring Finas Dillard for sheriff from voting at the primaries. This was fleeted in part by the anti-Dillard men seizing tho polls before the hour ap pointed and choosing their own men for chairman and clerk: ami then after fixing the time for closing, actually did close half an hour before tho time fixed for closing, thus shutting off any one who might offer his vote less than half an hour before tho timo set for closing. As the result would not have been materially different from what it is, tho conduct of the losses showed plainly what they were dcterrniued to do if necessary to accomplish their object, viz: to down Mr. Dillard We print a ceitilicate of a life long democrat, in today 'e issue showing that a Mr. Heisbey offered to vote iu Utnp qua precinct and was premptorlly denied unless ho would pledge himself to vote next Juno for tho regular democratic nominees. Hon. Geo. M. Brown, our popular and very efficient district attorney went to Albany today, Mr. Brow n can have the nomination again if ho wauls it. Mr. Brown baa beeii oue of tho most ener getic attorneys this district has had for years. By his judicious management of 1 cnmnal complaints before tho grand jury ho hsa eaved the counties in his district thousands of dollars. He ought to be re-elected. The democrats are between a chill and a eweal as to whom (hey will uame for ehcriff The combination is now fr Bon Agio for hlicriff, and with .atu Miller for deputy. 1 l 1 he Spaniards should be kicked out of Cuba. Uncle Sam should begin at once. Tho democratic bosses, the K. P. A. Editor of tho Roviow, and their little coterie of republican admirers are try ing to figure out which one of them was to blame for tho failure of tho republi can convention to nominato a ticket to their liking. Denies the Allegation. Euitou Plain-dealer : Tho Roseburg Review of the 2d iust. contains the fol lowing: 'Jim Cannon is chief of nollco, Tom Cannon is goirjg to be tho deputy sheriff and Claude Cannon is going to be deputy clerk." Tho above statoment as far as concerns myeelf and Tom Cunnon is an untruth and very likely was known to bo such by tho editor when published in the Re view. I have never held an office in my life, havo never asked for one and furthermore. I do not expect to do so, and the same can truthfully bo said of Tom Cannon. Howover, I am willing at any time to compare the records of my relatives as chronic office seekers with thoso of the Roseburg Roview. C. II. Fisher, the editor-in-chief of the Ketiew has been an unsuccessful candi date for representative, bis brother, W. II. Fisher, city treasurer of Roseburg for a loug time and now holds the poiition of postmaster, (about $1600 a year), on other brother, J. L. Fisher, holds tho position of deputy postmaster. His brother-in-law, Mr. McBroom, was an unsuccessful candidate for city recorder Tho assistant editor, S. F. Floed has been a candidate for legislative honors also for the office of county clerk, has held the office of city recorder and also a good position in the custom house at Portland. It is also current street talk that the names of both Mr. Fisher and Mr. Wimberly of Drain will appear be fore the convention again next Tuesday This is certainly a fair showing for thee people acd they should feel satis- tied, even if it was a fact that Tom Can non or myself were aspiring fur places However.such is not the casa with either oi us ami tticro is no reason why we should bear the brunt of the Review' sarcastic remarks. Clauue B. Cannon. Republican Ticket in Benton. Cokvalli.o, Or., April 4. Harmony prevailed in the republican county con vention held here today, and a good strong ticket was nominated. The dele gates to the Albany convention are: H.H. Glassford, Ed Williams, S. L, Kline, Marion Hayden and N. P. New, ton. The delegation will favor Hermann The delegates to the state convention are K. Holm, Thomas Cooper, J. Fred Yates, W. S. Huffard, W. S. Tomlinson and B. W. Johnson. ' Iiesolutioas weie adopted favoring Hermann: condemning the appropri ation of state fucds ence of state normal for the maintain' and other inElitu lions of learning; favoring are-enact ment of the mortgage tax law, and re quiring that county officials pay their own deputy hire.
