A big slide on the S. P. R. R. at Rob
ert's bill, three miles west of Dillard, oc
curred Saturday. A large force of men
were put to work immediately, and by
energetic digging and a slight sniffing of
of the track trains were enabled to go
through on time.
Geo. Leonard of Dillard is in the city
today before the county clerk, making
oath of office as postmaster at Dillard.
Mrs. Leonard also took the required oath
as his assistant. Said post office will be
re-established as soon as proper papers
are filed in the postoffice department.

Miss Graco D. Smith after answering
tho usual preliminary questions, said: I
was sixteen last July. Attcndod meet
ing at the barracks Thursday night and
left for homo about 10 o'clock in com
pany with Miss Nelly Wilson.
Matthowa overtook us at Woodward's
corner and went with us to tho corner by
the South Methodist church. I then
went with Nelly across tho school house
yard and she wont on home. I returned
back across tho school house grounds,
when I got on tho south side in tho
shadow of the bongo Matthews met me.

mo go. I wanted to go home and started,
bnt be caught me and pushed me up to
an open window in the basement and
tried to shove me through. I caught
hold of the window sill. lie shoved mo
through and dragged me up stairs to the
first floor. I tried to prevent going up
stairs by holding on to the banisters.
Ho tried to open tho door at the head of
tho stairs. It was locked. He then
took me down stairs and back by a wood
pile where he held me for oyor an hour.
With coaxing and threatning ho tried to
accomplish his designs.
Ques. Did you at any time make any
outcry for help?
An8. Yes, I screamed and cried for
help several times. I hallooed for
mamma. He laughed at me. He threw
dewn his overcoat on some wood and
asked me to lie down on it. I started to
leave, he caught mo and sat me down on
his overcoat. I kicked and screamed
md scratched his face and neck and bit
him, I think on his left arm. He tote
my clothes and broke a button off my
drawers. He kept me there for over an
hour till after tho overland passed. He
still held mo till parties in search of me
frightened him. Ho then released me
and I jumped out and ran for home.

Did you not say to Mr. Mathews while
you were in tne basement, "Let us go
down to the Poket bouso and then you
may?"
Ani. Yes. I wanted to get out of the
basement and go home, but he would
not lei me, eaying, "II you get out you
won't.
Mrs. O. L. Willi;, who lives across the
street from the school house, heard
screams at about 11 o'clock the scream'
mg woke tier up. liie screams were in
the direction of the school house, bnt
thought at the time it was that of a boy.
Nelly Wilson, Miss Smith's lady friend
with her at the meeting, coiroborated
Miss Smith's testimony up to the time of
leaving her at the school bouse. She
received a note from Mathews next day,
begging her to see Miss Smith and ask
her to say nothing upon the trial except
what she would have to. Mr. Card well,
Mathews attorney, called for and de
manded the return of the note. The
note was not given up. It was read at
the trial, and is as follows :
