Value of Alaska. uur purchase ol Alaska :in 1667 was negotiated by William H. Seward, secre tary oi.staie under Lincoln and John son. ii was an outrizlit trarehiu. in consideration of $7,'J00,000 in gold, and a few old guu boats thrown iu. The area of the Alaska purchase is about 577,000 square miles. Now let ub see what we have gotten out of it. The seal islands alcne 'have paid between six and seven million dol lars in royalties to Uncle Sam, and our people havo Bold tens of millions of dol lars' worth of iu products. The whaling industry haa yielded more than f 11,000, 000, and the fur, fi6h and mines up to 1890 had turned out products amounting to more than 4,000,000, so that out of that which cost us less that seven and a half millions, we had up to 1800, sold products to the amount of seventy-five millions, or to tun times the price origin ally paid. The resources of Alaska are enormous. The whaling industry is an extensive one. Dnring the last fifteen years the whaling catch amounted to millions, ami in 1801 there were more than a million and a half dollars' worth of whalcH caught in Alaskan waters. There are salmon canneries in different parts of Alaska which represent a capi tal of more thai $4,000,000. There is no doubt but that Alaska has still great pos sibilities, aud Undo Sam would he very fwliuii if he allows John Hull to take au inch more than that which is so occur. i-stelyeet down in lb? treaties, Let us tsyin emphatic terms to John Bull, NOTES OF INTEREST.
