AGAIN ENLARGED. After cauvassing tho matter pro and con, anil considering odds ngatnsl tho enterprise tho proprietors of this jour nal'a'ec.ued to undertake the publiea lion of a daily paper, and, on tho 17th day of last'June, issued the first num ber, a o-cofumn Vapor. Tho venture met with such success that on the Sth day of July it was found advisable to en large it to 0 columns, and now, to meet thp1growing demand for more space we have again found it necessary lo enlarge it to 7 columns, The proprietors of this journal do not boast of the wonderful things, in the newspaper line, they propose to do. They consider the matter, come to a conclusion as to what they can do and then go to work and try to a-omplish it. AVe have done the best we could to make a "good dean country newspaper and to furnish our readers the news as soon after occurrence as possible. Ue lieving that-a demand for a daily paper had arrived, we made the venture and so far have met with reasonable success. The Daily Plai.nmieai.uj: has more choice literary matter in its columns than any daily in this state outside of Portland, and our dispatches give all the most important news both foreign and domestic; so that our readers are kept itostcd in the current news of in terest, and our local columns have all that transpires in the city and its imme diate surroundings for each 24 hours. Our cditoriali- on important issues serve to point out needed rvtorjMBand the great advantages and invHft f country.; jfmmmp. AVe furnish our readers with the best we can, believing their intelligence will perceive what merits the paper pos sesses, and that their liberality will prompt them to give us their patronage. We call our reader attention to the ! i. . i . t i .i I to compare it. without prejudice, with other country newspapers; believing they wilt-duly appreciate our efforts to keep abreast of the age and extend to us their support. One English paper, deriding the Mon roe doctrine, sjjs lint Great Britain his rights on this hemisphere, being the owner not merely of British Guiana, bet of Canada. It will not take much sauce from England to make the United States mestion seriously the propriety of that ownership, and to proceed to eject Great Britain from this continent and make the Su Lawrence, from its source to its mouth, an American stream, as it should be. Lord Salubnry had better accept the Monroe doctrine as President Cleve land has denned it or he or his successor will have to accept the much more strin gent and radical definition which the American people will insist on unless the ending dispute is settled soon. Chi cago Tribune, Here are some cheerful statistics con cerning the independent workingmoman. They were collected by the Humanita rian. "There are," says the paper, "50,003 women and children in New York city working from 10 to 16 hours a day. There are women and children working in stores from 9 in the morning till 10 at, night. The majority of the children are cash girls, and they receive 1.50 a week, and are fined when absent r tardy, and when they make mistakes. Xew York city is a large city, and dis tances are great between home and place of employment, so if the children do not walk to and from work there is very little left out of tire $1.30. If the present congress reflects the 'temper of the American people the ad ministration will not be permitted to add another dollar to the bonded debt of the United States. If the administration is in need of money to pay government ex penditures it should raise the required revenue through other channels than the sale of bonds. The American jople favor a. tariff protective though it may be called thai will sufficiently defray the expenses ol government. We opine that the time is near at hand when such a tariff ill be adopted and carried into effect. It is not surprising that an organization of the character of the A. P. A.s are spreading over the country when Catho lics are being appointed to offices over the heads of native born citizens. The governor of Georgia, to rebuke the A. P. A.s of that state, appointed James O'Neil to be city solicitor of Atlanta, a job worth flO.OGO. Ambassador Bayard, in his English ut terancef, says that this country needs a strong man in the presidential chair. That is probably what the country thinks Don the subject, and when the strong man gets there he will see that a good, true American supercedes Ambassador Bayard at the court of St. James Al bany! lerald. If Europe does not remove the fliniBy decaying structure of the Ottoman emt pire a war will break out there before long that will spread over the whole of EurojKi and Aria before it can be stopped. There will he five eclipses this year, two of the euu, two of tho moon and one of the democratic party, and one grand occupation, viz: Johnny Dull by UncIeSam. . There are six so-called great powers in Europe. There isalao the Turk, who, being uuHpeakable, doefw't count. He merely stands off the six great powers. if wo luUht 1 1 aye more bonds to tide over the democratic deficit they should be issued, in small denominations and inado a pojmbirdoani , When KiroK) is selling our securities iu a p3iiic is the time when wine Ameri cans will get in and buy.
