ALL ON ON "SPLIT."
A nun of Lack Width Unrlclicd an Im
pecunious Gambler.
Sorno vcars ago, when gambling flour
ished in Washington, two of tho most
coithnsiastio votaries of faro.wro old
Bill Lunsfortl and Adam Koch. They
usually l)ucked,th(i animal together, and
when they had a winning streak tho
bank proprietor "was apt to walk tho
floor nervously, and there would bo sliif t-
inir of doalers overy quarter of an Janir
or pa When tho ficklo goddess frowned
npon them, however, there wis oy m
tho heart of tho man who carired tho
roll, aud pheasants and venison wcro lin
blo to mark tho next night's supper.
They always played tho limit, which
was 23 to "cases" inmost of tho rooms
in their day, whether their luck was
coal or bad, txntl consequently they won
big money or lost their stakes in short
order.
Ouo night Koch went up into Jones'
place, over Charlio Godfrey's saloon, on
E street, without a cent m las pocket,
Lnnsfonl was spread out before tho faro
table, with red chips at $1.25 apieco
stacked up in front of him and stacks
covering tho case cards on tho board. Ho
wastipsy and unsociable, and when Koch
suggested tho loan of a couple of stacks
ho was met with a stormy refusal
Ho sat down and watched tho play, how
ever, and at List Ltiusford, who was
calling for a small bottlo every other
turn, got drunker aud put a pilo of chips
on the king, of which only ouo had
shown. In a moment two kings f oUowed
each other in tho deal, and Jim Davis,
who was dealing, took down half of
Lnnsford'c bet. In doing so ho found tho
latter had put 19 chips instead of 20 on
tho card, and consequently ho left nino
chips and a split, or half a check, on it.
Lnnsfonl was wild. Ho hated a split
worse than any gambler who ever played
a system, and ho turned on Koch.
"Yon wanted a stake, dnru you, aud
now you can have it." he exclaimed,
and ho threw tho split at Koch. Tho
latter coolly picked up tho C2U cents
aud put it on a card. It won. Ho shifted
tho chip to another place, and it won
again. Hero and there he moved the
chips over tho table, now coppering
them and now playing them open, and
every time ho won. At the end of the
deal he had 30. At tho end of tho next
ho had $245. Tho news got out on tho
street that Adam Koch ltad struck a
winning streak. This was enough to
rjowd Joutti' place with curious and ex
cited spectators. At midnight Koch was
$1,400 ahead of tho game. At 5 o'clock
in tho morning he arose and called for
a bottlo of wine and paid tho ly with
a $10 bill out of a roll containing just
$2,090. That was the luckiest gamble
ever known in Washington. And Lmis
ford went broke trying to copper Koch's
steadv luck. Chicago Times-Herald.
Canine Etiquette.
Conventional rules aro most useful in
intercourse with strangers, and this feel
ing, the result of deliberate reflection
among men, seems quite as well under
stood by animals. Tho number of steps
which a prince or embassador might ad
vance to meet the other without ilerogat
ing from his dignity, and tho frequent
halts and bows, find a parallel in the
amusing form of canine etiquette, when
one dog "spies a stranger" at a distance.
The first dog stops short, then trots on a
little, then crouches and finally lies flat
down, with its nose on its paws, liko a
skirmisher ordered to open fire on tho
enemy. The other dog, which was less
quick sighted, sometimes lies down, too,
but mare usually trots slowly up, with
occasional halts.
The action of tho first seems clearly to
bo a survival of a time when a dog nat
urally crouched in order to conceal itself
tho moment it saw any other creature
which might hurt it or which, on tho
contrary, it might want to stalk. Tho
sudden drop is something like that of a
setter when "creeping" up on to the
birds, but more like the crouch of the
fox when it sees a haro or wants to con
ceal itself from persons whom it sees
whilo it is still unseen. But now it is
observed as pare convention, one which
is obviously mero show, but to omit
which would be a breach of canino eti
quetto which might and sometimes does
lead to a fight London Spectator.
BSSiiE an Industry.
Thero are numbers of villages in Rus
sia in which begging is the staple indus
try. No one does anything else. It is
stated, in the labor commission report on
that country that "nearly 3,000 out of
the 3,500 persons in tho districts of In
zar and Saransk are beggars," and that
tho wholo population of the village of
Marinin livo by means of begging. And
these are by no means isolated cases. La
many other districts precisely the same
style of things prevails.
In a real beggars village all the in
habitants, including even the starost
and other local dignitaries, arc enrolled
in a company, which is divided into
parties. These parties go out in turn on
begging picnics. Tho booty they bring
back is regarded as common property,
and the population depends upon it for
their support. Good Words.
The Word Clsar.
The word "cigar" is believed to come
from the Spanish cigarra, meaning a
grasshopper, and at first tho significance
and propriety of tho term seem ques
tionable. But in SjKini&h a garden was
cigarral, or the place whero the grass
hopper sang. Tobacco was usually grown
in a cigarral, and when the leaves wcro
rolled up and brought to it guest tho
host, specially to recommend the prod
uct, was careful to state that it was
growu in his own cigarraL Thus tho
word which means grasshopper came, in
a modified form, to lo applied to tho
habitat of the grasshopper, and finally
to the cigar, whose material was grown
there.

hesitation in recommending Dr. King's
New Discovery, as the results were al
most marvelous in the caro of my wife.
While I was pastor of the Baptist church
at Rivea Junction she was brought down
with Pneumonia succeeding La Grippo.
Terrible paroxysms of coughing would
last hours with little interruption and it
seemed as if she could not survive them.
A friend recommended Dr. King's New
Discovery; it was quick in its work and
highly satisfactory in results." Trial
