'Have yoaa novel called , by

No, and we never heard of tho book
until today, but wo havo had at least
ten applicants for it since 9 o'clock this
morning. I bop your pardon, but would
von please tell mo how yon heard of
that book?"
'Whv," sho replied hesitatingly, "I
received a note from a friend telling mo
to read it."
"Well," ho said, with a smile, "tho
others who applied had heard of it in
tho samo way.
Tho voung woman looked surprised.
but said nothing and passed our. A man
who had overheard tho conversation
spoko of it to his wifo that evening as a
curious coincidence.
'Coincidence, fiddlesticks 1" sho said.
"Wait a moment until I show you what
I received this mcrnicg. " And going to
her desk sho brought this noto fcr him
to read:
ilr Dear If yoc want a surprise read

"Well. I thought over all of tho Ellas,
Evas, Emmas and Elizabeths of my ac
quaintance," she went on. "but I could
not recognize the handwriting. It was
a clear, round hand, but unformed, like
a child's. Coincidence, indeed 1 It is a
clever advertisement, new in tho book
trade, but I havo seen similar letters.
Four vears ago a furniture firm sent out
a clever imitation of a letter, written in
a delicato feminine hand, dated at a
country villa and addressed 'Ma chcre
amie. ' It was a gossipy, pleasant letter,
and at the end requested the friend to
buy her two or three pieces cf furniture,
little pen and ink sketches of which
were pinned to the comer. Of course
tho price and where to buy them were
not overlooked. " New York Sun.

Monk Gerbert. who ascended tho papal
thrano under tho title of Sylvester IL
anticipating Roger Bacon, made a
bronze head, which, liko that owned by
the reputed inventor of gunpowder, was
capable of answering him liko an oracle.
From this head ho learned that he would
not die until ho performed em at Jeru
salem, and so ho determined to live for
ever, by taking especial caro not to go to
tho Holy City. Unfortunately Gerbert
soon found that brazen heads, like other
juggling fiends, "bat keep the word of
promise to our ear and break it to our
hope," fcr cso day ho was taken serious
ly ill just after ho had celebrated mass
in one of tho churches at Rome. On in
quiring tho name of this particular
church he heard, much to his dismay,
that it was popularly known as "Jeru
salem," and ho died in great agony a
few hours afterward. Five hundred
years after this Master Robert Fabian
gives us the story of the death of King
Henry IV, and tells us how that in his
youth it hid been prophesied that ho
would die in Jerusalem, and that tho
prophecy, as in tho case of Gerbert, was
in a way fulfilled by tho king dying in
tho Jerusalem chamber at Westminster

The Foundation Stone of Succcm.
The one great rnlo of business is that
of honesty, absolute and unqualified
honesty, writes Edward W. Bok in Tho
Ladies' Homo Journal. All the rules of
business are worthless if they are not
founded on that ouo and only founda
tion stone to true commercial success.
Honesty is not alone tho best policy in
business. It is tho cno and only policy.
Upon it, and upon it alone, can a good
reputation bo built, and a man in busi
ness without a reputation fcr honesty
might just as well stop. Any deviation
from the rule of honesty in business may
bring temporary gain, but it invariably
means permanent loss. On tho other
hand, a strict adherence to an honest
policy may mean a temporary loss, but
it is sure to result in a permanent gain.
The Statesman's Wife.

"And fwin yez got t'rougb yez liad

Jonathan Edwards liad sharp, strident
tones that grated unpleasantly on tho
ears of all who heard him.
Jewifch women wore silver half moons
