Intrmtlnc FWb Not Generally Known Concerning na Article-' of Utility Assist, unco nrntterrd'the lodastrrbr the Got. eratnent'a Kith Coratulatlon. Ever sinco.the spang fisheries of the Bahamas and tho pulf const, of Florida ihowed signs of becoming exhausted ef forts "hnve- been mado to cnltivato sponges cn farms or artificial beds, nud nioro ro rwitly science has tried to imitnto tho genuine nrticlo by converting tho soft fiber of tho coconuut leaves and shells iuto sponges of commercial value. Fpongo farming is now n successful in dustry, and hundreds of acres in tho gulf of Mexico along tho Florida coast tiro planted with "sponge cuttings" nud seeds. Tho 'work is not dissimilar in many respects to oyster culture. Tho young sponges aro plauted in water along tho coast varying from ono to flvo fathoms in depth. A few years ago tho fish commis sioners had their attention called to tho spongo fisheries off tho Florida coast, and after finding that tho beds wcro be ing rapidly depleted of tho hot stock, an examination of tho fisheries was mado to ascertain soma way of preserving them. Tho specimens of spongo taken to Washington in tho autnmn of tho year wcro fonnd to bo reproductive if tho proper conditions wcro supplied. Tho sponges in tho nntnmuwero found to de velop masses of protoplasm or spores, 1 which in tho spring of tho year were lib erated. Those spores contained tho small reproductive particles from which tho sponges developed. Somo of the sponges experimented with did not reproduco their kind at all, and it was fonnd that in order to cnltivato tho sponges it was necessary to plant sponges that pro duced certain. cells that contained the ova or egg and others (hat represented spermatozoa. A small spongo farm was established at Washington, and then others along tho Florida coast as experiments. Thoso proved successful, so that private indi viduals went into tho business. There are many acres of spongo farms near Key West, and others at Anclote, Fla., and near Tampa. These farms were first supplied with their seeds from tho fish commissioners, hat now they aro ob tained direct from tho spongo fisheries. Iathoatttumn of tho year tho various kinds of sponges aro purchased by tho spongo cnlturist, who generally takes an assortment that is sure to supply him with both the malo and female cells. Tho beds, car farms, aro usually locat ed at somo well protected placo along the coast and fenced in with natural for mations and artificial dams. Tho spongo seeds are kept in small "pounds" through the winter, where tho masses of protoplasm develop and grow. Early in the spring these spores are liberated in the larger body of water, where they soon swim around. The eggs continue to grow rapidly, and in a short time attach themselves to tho rocks or coral forma tion at tho bottom of the water. It is very difficult to get the right location for an ideal spongo bed. An ana of the sea where tho salt water flows in freely that has a natural hard bottom is tho best. Becks, stones and other substances can be dropped at tho bottom for tie sponges to fasten them selves to. The lagoon is then dammed rp, so that when the seed is put in fresh it cannot float oat to sea again. Somo simply throw their sponges in such a lagoon in the fall of the year and let tho protoplasm develop there. Under jsroper cultivation the sponges thus raised aro superior to thoso found in tho sea. Only the best varieties aro propagated. Tho "sheepswool" is tho choicest, with n tex rnre fine, soft andeironz. These sponKCO sell for from 1.50 to $3 a pound. Tho yellow" sponge is next in quality, and Ita price is much less than the "sheeps- wooL" The "grass" sponge raised is very limited, for ita value is too small to pay one far tho trouble. After the spongo form is once rtarted there is Utile more to do with it except at harvesting time. Tho spouses grow slowly and usually thrco years elapse be fore any aro polled up. Then only tho choicest, full grcmu ones aro gathered. The others ore left to produce new seeds and to reach a larger size. The picking of sponges in a farm of this nature is much, simpler than to raiso them from the deep waters of tho irnlf. Armed with a long leaded pole a boatman can easily oanl np tho sponges that he needs, and in tho coarse of n day he could gather three times tho quantity pulled np by the recnlar spongo fishermen off tho coast. The water is comparatively shal low over tho artificial beds, and not dis turbed by tides, floating debris or winds. It is also very clear and pellucid, so that one can see tho bottom for a long dis tance down. Occasionally ono finds a sponge farm where deep sea sponges are cultivated, and it is necessary, then, to have a diver to gather them. Hero again the work is made easier. The diver runs no risk from sharks, tides or other in conveniences that daily beset those off the coast The value of the sponge farm increases every year despite tho annual harvest that is taken therefrom. The new sponges aro spreading until every squaro inch of tho bottom and sides of the pond are covered with young and old sponges. If no diseases or enemies get into the bed, the sponges will then yield enor mous crops year after year. The annual income from a good sized bed ranges from $1,000 to $10,000, according to its size, location and age. Philadelphia Times. An English Vlrw of It.
