got-caught between a shaft and pulley

dressed the wounds and he is doing well.

parade nnder direction of Carlo & Hich
rdon, reprcsenta'ives of tho Crescent
bicycle, Joined by the Koseburg Bicyclo
Clab and all cycle riders. AH are in
vited to loin in the parado, at tho fair
groands, on Thursday afternoon, Sept
19. Procession to be formed at tho
entrance of race track, at the Crescent
fast, where wo havo made arrangements
for the storage and care of all wheels.
Will also havo dressing rooms for both

Cholera In Honolulu.
San Frasosco, Sept. 14. Private ad
vices received from Honolulu ami pub
lished here today Btate that cholera has
secured a stronger hold on the Hawa
iian capital than tho authorities thero
arc willing to admit. The natives are
said to Ihj much incensed at the local
health officials, and do not willingly
obey their orders. The natives not only
conceal now cases, but decline to uso
the treatment prescribed and hide the
fatalities resultant from tho epidemic.
Tho natives will not trust themselves in
tho hands of tho board of health if they
can avoid it, believing- such treatment
means certain death. Those who conic
into contact with the natives say that
they are much excited over the spread
of the disease, which they ascribe to the
uniopular board of health. It is pre
dicted that unless the disease abates or
some change is made in its management
the natives may revolt and resort to
their favorite remedies for diseases
riots and incendiarism. Thero are
physicians in Honolulu who enjoy the
confidence of the natives, but these doc
tors are not in favor with tho board of
health, and can take no prominent part
in the suppression of the epidemic. If
put in control these men might do more
than the entire board of health, for they
could convince tho natives that tho san
itary regulations are for their good, and
not part of a white man's plot to extcr

Corn For Fuel.
Cii!C.oo, Sept. 14. With a --'00,000,
(XX) bushel crop Uie west will have com
to burn. According to a Kansaj City
dispatch a packing-house company has
already issued orders to its Wichita
house to begin tho use of corn for fuel a
eoou as it can Ihj bought for 12 cents a
bathe!. On tho basis of tho May price,
with duo allowance for freigltt and for
the discount from tho contract price for
off grades, corn on the w estern farms is
not much over 10 cents a bushel.
The 1S95 crop of corn is practically
made, and without doubt it will be a re
cord-breaker.- It is figured that the
total ield of corn this year will be
2,325,000,000 bushels. It will not bo far
from double tho quantity of corn pro
duccd last year and far iu excess of the
corn produced in any of the star crops
in the history of tho trade.
Prices have been demoralized simply
in anticipation. December com touched
27; cents last week. On tho basis of
the present prices corn will be cheaper
than coal for fuel during the fall and
winter in the states west of tbo Missis
sippi river. It is said that experiment
lias shown that a ton of dry corn! will go
further in producing steam than a ton of
coal.
Anthracite coal laid down in Kansas
City, even at reduced freight rates, costs
a ton in car lots. At points in the in
terior of Kansas, Nebraska and western
Iowa, it cost from " to 19 a ton. At
these same points corn is worth from
12.50 to M a ton on the cob. Iowa coal
can bo delivered in central Nebraska at
about iZJoO a ton, and Illinois coal at ft
In Iowa native bituminous coal costs
over 2 a ton.

Ciucauo, Sept. 14. Charles Hutchin
son, president of the Com Exchange
bank, in an.intcrview today says arrange
ments for a new issue of bonds are about
completed.
'I have it on the best ot authority,"
ho said, "that tho Morgan-Belmont syn-
didate is negotiating with President
Cleveland. Tho only point undecided is
the amount, tho president desiring to
make it 125,000,000, while tho syndicate
wants at least $50,000,000. My informa
tion is from New York.

sus of opinion hero is that an issue of
bonds before congress has had an oppor
tunity to act is extremely improbable.
It is argued Uie shrinkage in the ship
ment of cotton is very unusual, and that
grain shipments must soon begin, and

money rales. Tho fact that tho United
States has, since January 1, 1S91, ex
ported more than $120,000,000 in gold in
excess of her imports, it is claimed, is a
Btroni; argument in favor of a speedy re
turn to normal conditions.

night's performance of tho Carlton com
pany of playors. "Jerry," tho outcast,
Is a character well adapted to Mr. Frank
Readick, and ho carried tho sympathy of
his audience from the first bell to the
drop of tho curtain in the last act.
Stanley J. Ross, as James Blackburn,
was an ideal villian, and Leon Henry
characterized the Jack Worthington in
an acceptable manner. Miss Florence
Earl as Franco was a favorito of the pit
and balcony aliko, while- Miss Millie
Freeman, by her catchy stylo, won all.
Miss Emma Morris as Mrs. Iee sus
tained her pSrt well and is ouo of tho
conscientious artist of the troupe.
