California Will Have a Full Exhibit at the
Bordeaux Exposition.
Tho viticultnral commissioners have
decided to makoan exhibit of California
wines and brandies at tho exposition
wli.wi is to bo hold at Bordeaux from
tho 1st of May next until tho 1st of No-
vombor.
Secretary Scott recoived a cablo dis
patch last week from Bordeaux to tho
effect that tho Societo Fhilomathiqne
has accoptod tho terms offered by the
viticultnral commission, and that Cali
fornia wines and brandies will bo ac
corded a full and completo roprosonta-
tion at tho forthcoming exhibition.
This is tho first opportunity which
has over boon accorded local wino grow
ers and distillers to display thoir prod
ucts in Bordeaux. During tho last two
yoars substantial recognition has been
accorded California wines and brandies
in various European ccntors. Gold med
als havo been awarded at tho exposi
tions in Gonoa in 1802, in Dublin in
1802, In Antwerp in 1803 and in Lyons
in 1804, but tho California wino and
brandy makers havo novcr beforo had
an opportunity of showing thoir best
products to tho wincmakcrs of tho
world in tho center of tho greatest clar
et market in tho world Bordeaux.

ceived splendid recognition from for
eign experts. Wo intend to carry tho
battle right into tho heart of tho finest
producing district of clarets in tho
world. Fivo years ago an effort to con
vince tho bottlers of French wino that

tion might havo been hopeless. Thero
are, howover, in this stato 100 or moro
men who havo in view tho production
of tho very highest types of wine, wheth
er theso types bo of claret, Burgundy,
Rhino wines or any other kind. Theso
pcoplo know that wo havo an area of
country suitablo for winemalang as
largo and as varied as all of tho coun
tries of Europo outsido of Russia.
"Wo want to put samples of all of
our wines beforo tho countries of tho
world, and wo havo never beforo had
such an opportunity as is now presented
in tho Bordeaux exposition. We do not
claim that wo havo tho very best of
everything, but wo do want to show to
all comers that wo havo at least as good
wino as can bo shown by any country.
All that wo ask is an equal and fair
chanco with any country, and I think it
is fortunate for tho stato that tho means
exist for inviting such a comparison
without any uuduo expense to tho mdi
vidual winemakers. Tho commission
intends to collect all of tho samples.
Tho samples will bo sent on, and duo
care will bo taken that fair play is done
to all concerned. All that wo are wait

Chicago capitalists, in conjunction
with others in Now York and Can
fornia, may undertako an improvement
in tho Golden Stato in tho sbapo of an
el ec trio road which will involvo an ex
penditure of 2, 500, 000. Tho projected
road is to run from Merced, in tho San
Joaquin valley. As planned it is to con
tinuo from that town into tho heart of
tho Yosemito valley, a distanco of 100
miles. A. F. Hatch, one of tho Chicago
men interested, said recently that few
things in connection with the project
were definitely settled except the plan
in a general way.
"The purpose," ho said, "is to fur
nish modern transportation facilities
into tho Yosemitc. At present visitors
leavo tho railroad either at Merced or
Raymond and travel by stago into tho
valloy. It is a four days' journey for
tho round trip and a laborious moun
tain climb for animals, although the
same distanco could bo traversed under
somo conditions in a few hours. Despite
tho discomforts of tho trip, manypeoplo
visit tho region. By an electric road the
journey will bo reduced to a fivo hours
rido in a comfortable car. It is proposed
to equip the road for freight traffic in
connection with passenger business.

old Cossack custom of treating cuts and

in charge. It is extremely probable
that tho ashes treatment will be adopt
ed in tho St Petersburg hospitals before
long.
To Define a Church.
A strango question is being raised in
tho court hero by two saloon keepers
who are being prosecuted for running
saloons within 300 feet of a church,
which is forbidden by the mulct law.
They admit that they aro within tho
prescribed distanco of tho building in
question, but deny that it is a church.
So the question arises, What is a
church? Tho one complaining 13 the
German Methodist, and it is located on
Locust street, one of the principal busi
ncss streets, and in a good business lo
cality. Tho church owned this property
and concluded to make the most of it
So a substantial three story business
block was built there, with stores on
the first floor, offices in front on the
second floor, and tho hall, used as a
church, on tho second floor, back. The
third floor is used by tenants. The jury
in ono caso found that the building was
not a church and that it could not keep
saloons 300 feet away. Tho caso will
undoubtedly bo carried to tho supreme
court to get a definition of what a

The Proposal to Tako It Out of tho State
house In Boston Creates a Sensation. (

Charles Francis Adams recounts "The
Story of tho Cod" in tho Springfield Re
publican. In 1783 John Adams secured
from Great Britain an eminent diplo
matic victory after a wearisome contest

17, 1784, John Rowe, a Boston member.

chamber of representatives in the state
house. Thirty yoars later another war
with Great Britain occurred. John
Quincy Adams was called on this time
as a diplomat, and he, too, saved the
codfish onco moro from British encroach
ments. Tho statehouse cod, which the
satrilegiou3 aro now threatening to store
in the garret, is cmblematio of com
merce, war and diplomacy and tells of
Massachusetts victories in all three
fields. After tho peaco of 1783 John
Adams quartered tho codfish in his coat
of arms, and it is there now. This must
havo been tho origin of the phrase "cod
fish aristocracy," onco in common, use.
It was commonly spoken in derision,
but tho pridoof tho Adamses in tha cod
fish would seem entirely worthy. -

Why the Marine Band Bid Kot Play at a
Certain Holiday Reception.
Mrs. Calvin Brice has, vulgarly speak
ing, "put her foot in it, " and not the
dazzling Trilby foot, which subjugated
all who saw it, but the foot which rich
people aro popularly supposed to reserve
for the necks of their inferiors. Mrs.
Brice, liko Mrs. Tymmyns, of humorous
memory, sent out cards for a New
Year's reception to bo held at her Wash
ington residence. Her "social secre
tary" was sent to secure the Marino band
for tho occasion. But the Marino band
had played at Mrs. Brico's last year,
and after its bard work and enchanting
strains wa3 not even asked if it-would
havo a glass of punch or a cup of tea.
The Marino band has a tenacious mem
ory Professor Fanciulli bowed to the so
cial envoy of Mrs. Brice and asked if
'after five hours of music will the mu
sicians havo some supper?"
The social envoy replied, "I would aa
soon ask the cook eat to supper as the
band. " So Professor Fanciulli said the
members of the Marine band were not
cooks, but musicians of the nation. The
commandant waved his baton, and the
social secretary retired in confusion!
