Tho viticultnral commissioners have decided to makoan exhibit of California wines and brandies at tho exposition wli.wi is to bo hold at Bordeaux from tho 1st of May next until tho 1st of No- vombor. Secretary Scott recoived a cablo dis patch last week from Bordeaux to tho effect that tho Societo Fhilomathiqne has accoptod tho terms offered by the viticultnral commission, and that Cali fornia wines and brandies will bo ac corded a full and completo roprosonta- tion at tho forthcoming exhibition. This is tho first opportunity which has over boon accorded local wino grow ers and distillers to display thoir prod ucts in Bordeaux. During tho last two yoars substantial recognition has been accorded California wines and brandies in various European ccntors. Gold med als havo been awarded at tho exposi tions in Gonoa in 1802, in Dublin in 1802, In Antwerp in 1803 and in Lyons in 1804, but tho California wino and brandy makers havo novcr beforo had an opportunity of showing thoir best products to tho wincmakcrs of tho world in tho center of tho greatest clar et market in tho world Bordeaux. Secretary Scott of tho viticultnral commission said: "California wines havo already re ceived splendid recognition from for eign experts. Wo intend to carry tho battle right into tho heart of tho finest producing district of clarets in tho world. Fivo years ago an effort to con vince tho bottlers of French wino that wo had wines worthy of their recogni tion might havo been hopeless. Thero are, howover, in this stato 100 or moro men who havo in view tho production of tho very highest types of wine, wheth er theso types bo of claret, Burgundy, Rhino wines or any other kind. Theso pcoplo know that wo havo an area of country suitablo for winemalang as largo and as varied as all of tho coun tries of Europo outsido of Russia. "Wo want to put samples of all of our wines beforo tho countries of tho world, and wo havo never beforo had such an opportunity as is now presented in tho Bordeaux exposition. We do not claim that wo havo tho very best of everything, but wo do want to show to all comers that wo havo at least as good wino as can bo shown by any country. All that wo ask is an equal and fair chanco with any country, and I think it is fortunate for tho stato that tho means exist for inviting such a comparison without any uuduo expense to tho mdi vidual winemakers. Tho commission intends to collect all of tho samples. Tho samples will bo sent on, and duo care will bo taken that fair play is done to all concerned. All that wo are wait ing for is for completo particulars as to tho expense. San Francisco Chroni clo. BY RAIL TO THE YOSEMITE. FIto Honrs by Electric Hood In Flaee ol Four Says by Stagc- Chicago capitalists, in conjunction with others in Now York and Can fornia, may undertako an improvement in tho Golden Stato in tho sbapo of an el ec trio road which will involvo an ex penditure of 2, 500, 000. Tho projected road is to run from Merced, in tho San Joaquin valley. As planned it is to con tinuo from that town into tho heart of tho Yosemito valley, a distanco of 100 miles. A. F. Hatch, one of tho Chicago men interested, said recently that few things in connection with the project were definitely settled except the plan in a general way. "The purpose," ho said, "is to fur nish modern transportation facilities into tho Yosemitc. At present visitors leavo tho railroad either at Merced or Raymond and travel by stago into tho valloy. It is a four days' journey for tho round trip and a laborious moun tain climb for animals, although the same distanco could bo traversed under somo conditions in a few hours. Despite tho discomforts of tho trip, manypeoplo visit tho region. By an electric road the journey will bo reduced to a fivo hours rido in a comfortable car. It is proposed to equip the road for freight traffic in connection with passenger business. know tho carrying of freight by an elco trio road is an experiment, but it has been done, and wo think it can bo ac complished regularly, successfully and profltably." An American Mansion Inspected and Ap proved by New York Society. Society has examined the new Corne lius Vanderbilt house and pronounced "magnificent," "superb," "royal" any adjeotive, in fact, that describes great size combined with good taste. Tho reception tho other afternoon was perhaps the largest and most represent ative ever given in Now York, at least 500 people making it a point to bo there. It differed, too, from other receptions in that tho visitors, instead of standing about in two or three rooms, as is usual, wandered off after paying their compli monts to Mrs. Vonderbilt and spent tho rest of tho afternoon in sightseeing through tho long suits of apartments. "I do bolievo I have walked a milor exclaimed one woman, who wa3 evi dently determined that nothing of value should escape her close scrutiny. The house Is indeed an education In itself, with its different styles of decora tions, according to different periods, but all blending togother in a harmonious whole. Somo of tho critics got their Louises pretty well mixed, pronouncing a Henri II room a Louis XV, and a Louis XVI colonial room, but it didn't make any difference Tho Louises committed andean cover multitude of sins, and Peter Mario and few other experts on interior decora tions had a splendid time setting some of tho women straight on their dates. Tho houso will of course look even finer when lighted for a ball, with the company in evening dress, but even as it was it truly merited all the praiso given and denotes a now era in tho splendor of American living. Cholly Knickerbocker in New York Recorder. ASHES TO CURE CUTS. Russian Physicians Berive an Old Cossack Method of Treating Wounds. Somo of tho best known physicians in Russia aro strongly advocating the adop tion in tho government hospitals of an old Cossack custom of treating cuts and wounds with ashes. Tho Cossack peas antry have treated cases in this fashion from time immemorial, and Dr. -fasti koff, a Russian physician who has been tudying tho treatment, recently said in an interview in a Russian medical jour nal: "I strongly recommend tho treating of severe cuts and wounds with asnes. Experiment has convinced me of tho thorough efficacy of the treatment, and in addition it is cheap, takes little time to arrange and does away with bulky bandages, which have always been the bano of nurses and physicians. Tho best ashes aro those resulting from tho burn ing of somo cotton stuff or linen, and only a very thin layer should bo applied. If tho wound has been made by some dirty instrument and there is danger of blood poisoning, it should be first wash ed thoroughly with, a lotion. The ashes with tho blood form a hard substance, under which the most severe cuts heal with remarkablo rapidity. Dr. Prahiroff haa experimented twrtn ashes on 28 cases of cuts, and only two of tho entire number failed to result successfully. Theso cases would have been cured, too, had not tho nurses fail ed to apply prescribed lotions to the wounds beforo tho physicians took them in charge. It is extremely probable that tho ashes treatment will be adopt ed in tho St Petersburg hospitals before long. To Define a Church. A strango question is being raised in tho court hero by two saloon keepers who are being prosecuted for running saloons within 300 feet of a church, which is forbidden by the mulct law. They admit that they aro within tho prescribed distanco of tho building in question, but deny that it is a church. So the question arises, What is a church? Tho one complaining 13 the German Methodist, and it is located on Locust street, one of the principal busi ncss streets, and in a good business lo cality. Tho church owned this property and concluded to make the most of it So a substantial three story business block was built there, with stores on the first floor, offices in front on the second floor, and tho hall, used as a church, on tho second floor, back. The third floor is used by tenants. The jury in ono caso found that the building was not a church and that it could not keep saloons 300 feet away. Tho caso will undoubtedly bo carried to tho supreme court to get a definition of what a church is. Des Moines Dispatch. The Phonograph In a Ketr Bole. Having possession of a seditious pho nograph is tho latest instance of disloy alty punished by a jealous continental monarch. Tho authorities at Triest ar rested an Italian guilty of having ex hibited a phonograph which played the Italian royal march. The musical patriot has been obliged to leave tho town and take with him tho subversive instrument Triest Correspondent The Trilby Craze. Tho Trilby enthusiasm in New York city has had some amusing results. The "Trilby waltz" is affected by certain young peoplo who read not wisely, but too much; tho "Trilby collar" i3 a novelty in certain stores; tho "Trilby lisp," whatever that may be, is a subject of gossip in up town boarding schools. ( Tho "Worcester Gazette gays: Charles Francis Adams recounts "The Story of tho Cod" in tho Springfield Re publican. In 1783 John Adams secured from Great Britain an eminent diplo matic victory after a wearisome contest tho right of fishery and on March 17, 1784, John Rowe, a Boston member. asked and received permission to hang tho historic codfish on the wall of the chamber of representatives in the state house. Thirty yoars later another war with Great Britain occurred. John Quincy Adams was called on this time as a diplomat, and he, too, saved the codfish onco moro from British encroach ments. Tho statehouse cod, which the satrilegiou3 aro now threatening to store in the garret, is cmblematio of com merce, war and diplomacy and tells of Massachusetts victories in all three fields. After tho peaco of 1783 John Adams quartered tho codfish in his coat of arms, and it is there now. This must havo been tho origin of the phrase "cod fish aristocracy," onco in common, use. It was commonly spoken in derision, but tho pridoof tho Adamses in tha cod fish would seem entirely worthy. - On this subject tho New York Sun re marks: There is a proud and beautiful build ing in Boston. Bulfinch did it It 13 a Parthenon surmounted by a gilded gas house, and to those who love it it is the supremo architectural achievement of tho world. Even tho limited or preju diced persons who dony its charm can not forget tho joy of its associations. To go to Boston, to view that dome with an eager eyo and to perspiro with . tho pulchntudo of it and tho deeper thought that ono doesn't have to live in Boston is not tho least of pleasures in a world that persons of fair digestion regard with a certain amount of attach ment As a matter of fact, the dome is a hollow fraud. Mr. Bulfinch, who has had tho distinction of having an emi nently parochial street named after him. was not lucky enough to havo bis de signs carried out and the statehouse, with its feeling Dutch name, is not all that it might have been. But it has merits. Thero is or was in it the sacred codfish, a palladium that fell from heav en plash into tho Frog pond in the days when Boston was an eminent sea port This codfish wa3 almost human and quito superhuman. It could wink. It had learned to say cultyur and liter ature and lef tenant, besides tha other things that are said in Boston. Thero was a silver bathtub in which it used to tipple when the Boston nine got a game. It used to leap into tho air when ever Governor Greenhalge appeared with bluo knit thinking cap on. It was sprinkled with champagne whenever the Ancient and Honorable Artillery com pany had a feast AH the thinkers in tho legislature revered it It would wag its tail at a good thing and drop dead whenever a bore was up. They have been "fixing up" the state house. Evidently some idiot is in charge. Tho sacred codfish is not to be included among the treasures of the re stored'statehousc. Th61iaw-and-rerT(juT people say it drinks too much. The A. P A. says it has a Hibernian counte nance. All the same, it was the best in the state. It was the most venerable in stution there, except Harvard college and Georgo Marden of LowelL It ia gone. It has been torn down.
