A I0RTUKE AT CARDS.
IT WAS WON BY JOHN SCOTT, THE
"GENTLEMAN GAMBLER."
IIU Wlnninc nt White, la Londan, In j
the Last Century Exceeded S5.0WO.&00. .
Thoosh Illiterate, Ho Was a Stan of the j
Mast Precis Methods. J
Of all tho gentlemen gamblers of the i
tloso of tho eighteenth centary in Eng- j
land a singlaone is noted forth ins-!
uicnsitr and tho regularity of his rin-1
nings. This was John Scott, who, be- j
ginnintras apennilas captain, vrooad
np his career as a millionaire genflraL
On tho subject of tho campaigns he ooe
tlncted history is silent, but contempo
rary London was f nil of talk of Lis Mar
velous lcck-with dtoo and cards, and
tho marital misfortunes of his later life
gave moro material for tho gossips.
Writing to Richard Bentloy, from
Arlington street, on Feb. 25, 1735,
Horace VTalpolo says:
"Tho great event is the catastrophe
of Sir John Bland, who has flirted away
hiswholoforrnnoathasard. Ho t'other
night exceeded what was lost by the
lato Dcko of Bedford, having at ono pe
riod of tho night (though ho recovered
the greatest part of itt lost 88,000.
Tho citizens put on their doable chan
neled pnmps and tradge to St James
street in expe-ctatios of seeing judgment
on White's angels, with flaming
swords, and devils flying away with
diccboscs, like the prints in Sadler's j
hermits. Sir John lost this immense ,
snm to a Captain Seott, who at present j
has nothing bnta lew debts and ats
coairassdorL "
Sir John Blend, to oonclctlo here the
history of that luckless dicer, shot hira
sel dead after losing tho last of Ms for
tune in Hippos: perk.
Captain John Scott was of that branch
of the namerons Scott faXniJy of which
Sir Walter was a zaeniber, and bis an
cestor in the thirteenth century was that
famoss chemist, 3ichael Scott, who
won tho name of Wiaard. A later Scott
distinguished himself in the time of
Charles II by marrying, when he was
hire1f only 14 years old, a lady who
was three years his junior. The bride
was ilary, coca toss of Bncclench, in
her own right the riehest heiress in Soot
land. The marriage was a secret one,
and none of the friends and few of her
family were informed of it nntil tJte
day after. The Toothful bridegroom did
not proSt greatly by this matrh, for his
bride died at IS. Her sister Anne, who
succeeded to her titles and estates, made
a marriage with the pet son of Charles
U, Mcnmccth, and had a nmneraas
family.
It was GO years later, or about 1750,
that yonng John Scott, sod of tho Lafed
of Scot's Tarvet, entered King George's
army. Two years later he was in Lon
don "and in the zaidet of the most reck
less set of spendthrifts, rakes and game
sters that English sociery has er
known. Sir John Bland was only one ,
of a thousand rich young Englishmen !
who threw away his fort-one over die j
gaming table at White's. The one his- j
taric loser of that era was Char las James ;
Fox; Pitt's rival. Fee gambled sway, j
all toF, no less than 5, 000, 000. Seott
was the very antipodes of Fox. When
ho died, at a ripe, old age, he left a for
tune as great as that with which Fox
had begun, and every penny cf it had
teen won at the gaming tables For ns
a ripe scholar. Scott was almost illit
erate Fox said that losing was the next
greatest pleasure to winning. Scott
never lost, or so rarely that it did not I
affect the serenity of his career as a i
winner. Fox would go home in the !
morning after a night in which he had i
gambled away 10,000 or 20,000 and
immediately lose himself in a study of j
Sophocles or iEscfcyins. Scott, like the j
sensible fellow he was, weald boston j
his coat over theportemonnaie in which !
he carried away winnings of aa equal i
or even greater amount and innaedisse- j
ly go to bed so as to be fresh for play '
in the evening. i
When Scot: focad himself in London, j
and amid the wild young men cf his
era, he determined thai gaming was
his only chance of getting money. When j
ho engaged himself to throw a series of I
mains with Sir John Bland, he had.
a few debts ana Jus commission.
shrewdness tanghthim that there was
nothing in dicinc, at which a atopid
man has as good a chance as a bright '
one, and so he speedily gave ap heard ;
and applied himself to whist, at which j
mn heaven fights on the side of' the ;
skOlfnl player. Never in the history of .
-play did men gamble for socfa high ;
stakes as Scott and his victims did at j
White's between 1753 and 1780. Scott's j
system was an exceedingly simple one.
Ho gave himself the best of it in ev i
ery possible way. He never went to tho
gaming table unless his bead and his)
stomach' were in the very best order. J
He never lost his composure or his good
nature for an instant. He played a per
fectly fair and honorable game, and at
first he made ft a rnle never to play for
mere than a fixed stun, hich ho could
afford to lose. He won so bteadily that
it Wasn't Icog before be was prepared
to risk any snm which even tho wealth- .
iest or the most reckless of his adver
saries would ventare to propo&e.
A fctory which illustrates capitally
Scott's patience in the face of bard lock '
has been preserved. Oiio r;!ght, while.,
he was at the card taala. news was

Mrs. Seott, had given Lirlii to a girL
