Writing to Richard Bentloy, from
Arlington street, on Feb. 25, 1735,
Horace VTalpolo says:
"Tho great event is the catastrophe
of Sir John Bland, who has flirted away

night exceeded what was lost by the
lato Dcko of Bedford, having at ono pe
riod of tho night (though ho recovered
the greatest part of itt lost 88,000.

on White's angels, with flaming
swords, and devils flying away with
diccboscs, like the prints in Sadler's j

Captain John Scott was of that branch
of the namerons Scott faXniJy of which
Sir Walter was a zaeniber, and bis an
cestor in the thirteenth century was that
famoss chemist, 3ichael Scott, who
won tho name of Wiaard. A later Scott
distinguished himself in the time of
Charles II by marrying, when he was
hire1f only 14 years old, a lady who
was three years his junior. The bride
was ilary, coca toss of Bncclench, in
her own right the riehest heiress in Soot
land. The marriage was a secret one,
and none of the friends and few of her
family were informed of it nntil tJte
day after. The Toothful bridegroom did

succeeded to her titles and estates, made
a marriage with the pet son of Charles

army. Two years later he was in Lon

less set of spendthrifts, rakes and game

of a thousand rich young Englishmen !

taric loser of that era was Char las James ;
Fox; Pitt's rival. Fee gambled sway, j

was the very antipodes of Fox. When
ho died, at a ripe, old age, he left a for
tune as great as that with which Fox
had begun, and every penny cf it had
teen won at the gaming tables For ns
a ripe scholar. Scott was almost illit
erate Fox said that losing was the next
greatest pleasure to winning. Scott
never lost, or so rarely that it did not I
affect the serenity of his career as a i
winner. Fox would go home in the !
morning after a night in which he had i
gambled away 10,000 or 20,000 and
immediately lose himself in a study of j
Sophocles or iEscfcyins. Scott, like the j
