Picturesque and MIrthrul Effecta Produced With rasto Pot and Brush Devils and AsceU Are Inconrrooosljr Mixed Cp. Tost No BIlll- Goo. AH trades havo their droll aspects, bnt that of tho billposter is ono long vista of fun. Ho may become an artist comedian of tho first order. It does not require much brain weight cither. An old f enco is his only arena, and his post- crs are bis stock in trade. j His fun is bnt momentary, bnt it is potent vrhilo it lasts. Ho accomplishes it by means cf tho combinations ho is forced to make when ho posts new "bills over tho old ones. Some of the oombina tioas are very funny. Thus ho is forced to become a mirth producer whether ho will or no, bnt there are somo among tho men who get their livelihood in this manner who intentionally placo tho new bills where they will produce the oddest if bat momentary effects. The reporter watched ono of these knights of tbopasto potwhilo bo pro ceeded to cover up a rather flaming pic ture of his sabtnic majesty with a bill which portrayed a naval officer in full uniform. Tho first section put on was tho officer's head. As it fitted exactly en to Mephisto's shoulders the effect was comicaL Tho next section brought the naval man down to the bottom of his coat From a short distance it ap peared precisely as though ho was mi nus his nether garments and stood bare legged in tho rising flames which en veloped him to his knees. Tho billposter chuckled as ho surveyed his work at this point and asked the reporter what ho thought of it while ho covered tho officer's nakedness with a pair of trou sers and shoes. Tho billposter was quite talkativo in his way and spoko of tho droll side of his business. "Did it never occur to you," said he as he picked and sorted Eomo flaming colored bills preparatory to pasting them on tho fence, "did it never occur to you what on odd and amusing business this is? Tou saw mo put a uniform cm thodeviL Funny, wasn't it? Well, it wasn't a patch to the effects produced sometimes. These bills havo to be changed nearly every week, and the posters get fixed up in tho queerest way. I've put angels' heads ca devils and devils' beads cn angels. Pvo put a man with a dress coat go where a ballet girl was, so that it look ed as though tho skirts branched out below where the coat was. I left it there for a moment while I pasted other bills, and quite a crowd gathered around. A policeman came along, and I had to cov er it up. "On co I had a Salvation Army poster to put up, and when I pasted tho top pcrtiaa of it over a bill advertising the play of 'Julius Caesar' the large blue bonnet cf the Salvation Army girl fit ted Csszr perfectly. It was too bad I had to Fpoil it." "You see that ballet girl on tho fence over there? I havo got to paste this big cat over it. xtow watch me do it. He took a section of a bill with the head of a grinning feline on it and plac ed it so that it fitted to the girl's shoul ders. A halo Eurrounded the cat's head. and tho whole affair had a puss in boots air about it that reminded one of early fairy tales. Near by an tho fence was a heroic size negro minstrel, whose im mense teeth showed through bps which Etretched form ear to ear. "Now see how I will fix that fellow," aid the man of the brush as he got ready a bill on which a large tiger was represented balanced an a big blue balL The tiger's position was on the upper part cf the poster. The first section fix ed the animal's head on tho fence, and with tho next the body and feet were pasted up. Then appeared a curious ef fect. "Where the blue ball was to be pasted tho negro's faco still grinned, but tho tiger wa3 now standing on top of the man's head. "That, "said the billposter, "iswhat I call area! artistic effect. It isn't often an artist can create a Samson in almost one stroke of his brush.'" Following bis pasting of the tiger, the man proceeded to put up a bear. On the spot where it was to go an ovcrfat baby held up a package of a compound much advertised of late. Tho bear was built up from the feet, which rested on horizontal bar. The bear's neck and the baby's neck touched the same point, and before the bear's head was pasted up thero appeared a combination of human andbruto anatomy which could hardly be equaled by a monstrosity in a dimo museum. Bill posting has undergone a great change in recent years. It is not tho haphazard business it once was that is. it is not allowable for men to go around pasting bills wherever they could find a fence. Most of tho big fences aro pre empted now by firms who pay rent for tho privilege. Tho old sign of "Post no bills" is mcro potent than it was. Its infringe ment now may mean a lawsuit It used to be very much disregarded. Thero is record of a very literal man who was crrestcd for infrineinc a sign which read "post no bills under penalty." When the judge asked him if ho had cny excuse to offer, ho said ho bad not "posted under penalty. Ho had posted further along tho fence." New York World. The Ericbtcii ZJcbt. Tho great searchlight mado by tho General Electric company, and which wss exhibited at Clicago, afterward at tho Winter exposition, San Francisco, ha3 found a final homo end resting placo at Meant Ijwe, California. It is esti mated ths rays of t!ii3 wonderful light ran bo seen at a distanco cf 200 miles when tho air is clear. Philadelphia Ledger.
