'Irregularities at tha Soldiers
Home'' afford certaiu visa ed
itors, who are not familiar
with the facts, a topic for discussion.
It is a well known fact here in Bose-
bnrg that the members of I ho board
nerer did wore in harmony, and
there has always been palling and
hauling in everything nndertaken.
We opine the "irregularities" will
prove to be nothing but a difference
of opinion between the commission
ers as to tho best methods to be pur
seed in the management of the work.
The official vote for governor of
Oregon is as follows: Lord, 41,139;
Gailoway, 17.SG5; Kennedy, 1.932;
Pierc?, 26,123. Irord had pluralities
in every county bat five Baker, Coo.
Jackson. Wallowa, Harney the last
named gave Galloway a plurality
and the other four were for Pierce.
Clatsop's voto for Lord tied the com
bined opposition. Six rounti&3 gave
Lord majorities over all Columbia,
Gilliam, ilanou, iloUnomah, Wasco,
Washington.
Some of tho very smart represen
tatives in Salem ere uow fixing the
legal rate for printing. AVhy don't
-they establish, the price for wood.

needed by tho county Thero wonld
certainly be'jnst as mnch sense to fix
tho rate for one commodity as
another. Another bill introduced
limits the fees of attorneys, no mat
ter what tha contract These extra
ordinary legislators should regulate
everybody's business with a general
omnibus bill, and settle the whole
matter at once.
Xow that the re-election of Senator
Dolph is assured, the Oregonian is
already paving tbe way for the defeat
of Senator Mitchell two years hence.
Before tho caucus was held whereby
the election of Dolph wa3 practically
assured the Oregonian had not one
word to say against caucus rale, bnt
as soon as such action did take
placs tbe Oregonian at once announ
ced that it "has not been nor ever
will be a caucus-driver In other
words, it proposes to fight Senator
Mitchell from now until after the
election of. ins successor two years
hence.
Salem Post: Representative Hebl
brede, of Douglas county, made a
good speech in the house on Tues
day afternoon against the state pay
ing for papers for use of the members
of the legislature. He declared that
they might pass the resolntion, but
that he wonld take no paper. He
said he was able to pay for bis own
newspapers. Neither did be want
any penknife. He could buy his own.
Ho came to the legislature pledged
to economize, and he was troincr to do
it. Mr, Seblbrede spoke well, has
tbe right metal in him, and will
make a useful member.
The Review's special holiday
edition is far superior to any hereto
fore issued. It consists of 12 pages
and a supplement, and iscbockfnll of
items interesting to tbe hotneseeker.
While it contained a few errors
and made a few omissions, yet any
person at all acquainted with tbe
work of issuing each a paper well
known that the errors and omissions
wero unintentional on tbe part of the
publishers, and are probably more
deeply regretted by tbem than ,are
the aggrieved parties themselves.
The publishers of tbe Review are
certainly entitled to much credit for
their enterprise.
The friends of Senator Dolph are
naturally jubilant over tbe result of
tbe republican caucus last week, and
'seem to think be secured a great vic
tory. Well, perbnpi he did; but to
our way of thinking be bad a very
close call much closer in fact than
we expected. Out of tho 72 votes in
tbe caucus bo secured but three more
than enough to give him tbe nomina
tion and six less than the number re
quired to elect. However, we be
lieve U to be tho duty of every, repub
lican member of the legislature to
now vote for Dolpb, lhat being the
xpress3d wish of a majority, oven
though small, of tho republican .mem
bers of both hpuees.

flore About "Honest Money."
To tub Editor: After reading Lego's
article on "honest roonev" in Jyour issue
of January 14tli. I feel like asking space
for a Tew words about money too. Le;
says, all money is honest money, and
then names tue various kinds in circul
tion aud used as money. Now, I do not
intend to take issue with I.cso, or any
one else iu ll.is matter, but I niali to call
attentionto-a-fc-'. Xiw u.
names but one kind of money as honest
"Gold coin is honest money, bavins
the full fonctions of a legal tender." All
tbe other kinds have an it or a because
attached. I wish people to realize this
fact. There is no where among civiliied
people any doubt about gol.l, regardless
of legislation; it is accepted without
question at fixed valce uer ouuee or grain
of btanda.nl fineness. This is beyond
question the fact now. Do not get ex
cited and say "gold bog." No, person
ally, I rather favor silver for coin than
gold, because I believe a given number
of silver dollars will do more work
than gold, up to a certain point, ther
tbe gold will do it cheaper on account of
its smaller bulk. And right here per
haps is where gold will always prevail
over silver. 1, with my neighbors A and
Baud C, agree fully as to money, and use
silver. Bat here is neighbor l who will
have nothing but gold when we deal with
him, and thus the combination is
t poiled. Well, we say he u cranky an l
we deride we will coerce him and make
bim take oar citver.
What is the result in such a esse. He
will cease to do business with u, snd
thus get beyond oar law and keep to his
gold in spite of us. This brings as to
serious thoughts. It will r.ot suffice to
say that D's wealth makes his preference
Net at all. He may be poorer than any
of us, and in fact qnite iguorant about
matters ofificar.ee, etc , except thai. lien
be has gold be knows be has the kind of
money that any one will take for what
be may waut and in any quantity . it li
on t question. I asked a pirsou,t!iis ques
tion thf other day: If you are to get a
certain roam! sum if money ana .canted
to Le absolutely tale as to vetting the
greatest value for it ao where, u bat kind
would yoa take?
"Ob, paper money is good enough for
me," be replied.
That is not the question. I mefn
money that you cccld take and uso any
where. "Well," he replied, after a littlestudy,
"I would be obliged to take gold."
This, then, settles it; tho other fellow
over whom we have no control, forces us
in order to be safe, to make gold the
standard, too. "Oh, but ajB my friend,
this is not right at all." Granted, but
this teems to be one of the things we
have not as yet been able to overcome.
And I fear tbn veiy thing will always
stand in the way of unlimited coinago of
silver by out government -it any flxed
ratio to gold regardless of its commercial
value. Another matter: I have be
fore me a statement made by national
banks of deposit made on settling day
nearest to June labt, giving the amo'iot
deposited in money and iu checks, and
find in tbe east where bank's are plenty,
that the monpy deposits were much
Lirger than in the south and west,
Oregon doing more than one-half its bus
iness with checks, some ttstca running
over 75 per cent in cheefcp, fijowing
clearly that honest names is just as good
as honett money for closing business
with, whilst thrift and economy is of
more real value than money. II.
En. Plainuealeu: Iii your issue of
last Monday, I read Li:o's idea of ''hou
eit money." He says Kold Is honest
money, utinjj the indicative mode, tho
strongest uianner of asserting a fact.
Silver and paper, he sajs, "uouW be
honest money" under certain conditions,
I.nelng the potonlial mode, tho usual man
i ner of declaring what onaht to be. Gold
then is out of tho category of debate it
is honest money, u truism which no ouo
imputes. Tho question of monoy thou la
narrowed dawn to silver and greenbacks.
Greenbacks "ironW tw honest inoaoy,"
says Lego, when it is "rni-o l aboro dis
trust by its intet changeability for gold
and silver and convertibility into interest
bearius bonds of the ration. " That is
tho rock on which we founder. Groen
b.icks wero made a Icgil tcmlor by tho
flat of tho nation, and yet it is a histori-
:d fact that at ono tiitio they woitil ))iss

clared everv dullnr of face value to ho
100 eon s. Was it au honest dollar then
while thus dit-countcd? The government
took it tit its fee value, und creditors
had to; bnt no ono else would exchaueo
gold or protierty at its face value. Tho
government paid it out aiul took it buck
at face value. The government kept its
pledge except redeeming its notes with
gold, that it could not do till 1ST'.), after
it had accumulated gold ei.ough to re-
leoc.i its paper. The same thing is row
tho cine. The government's redemption
in gold on demand makes its notes ;ih
good ;us gold. It is to ktep treasury
notaa on n parity with gold that the sec
retarv of the troas'irv Ins to resort to
selling bond for gold in ordijr to redeem
its notes, when presented
