KaUbllahed Hla Curiona l'motuil Ex. i perlcncca. A -writer liko David Christie Mur-; ray, who has taken nil life for the field ; tt his art as a novelist and draws upon , tho whole planet for his illustrations, must havo had rich experiences in tho domain which tho Psychical Iuvcstig.v tion society has chosen for its own. But , ho docs not overload his books with ma- j terial of this kind, nor is his conversa-. tion ranch weighted with tho burden of i thine between heaven and earth that I wo do not usually dream of. And yet ; when prompted to do so he cau speak ) on these subjects not only with knowl- edge, bat also with eloquence. He is fit- ( ted to do this, first, by his fluo mental organization, for be has been psychical- ( ly sensitive since boyhood, and nest by tho many psychical experiences which havo fallen to his lot during a long, active and advenrurona life, lived among many people and many parts of tho world. Ho does not, of course, believo in tho aberrations of "occultism," but ho is convinced that beneath tho ordina ry experiences of life, perceptible to tho senses, there exist spiritual phenomena which will repay investigation and which science is only now beginning to learn. Ono day recently Mr. Murray talked to a Boston Herald man on tho special subject of telepathy, and after showing from his own personal experiences how t mind may act upon mind at a distance, independently of the ordinary means of intercommunication, ho went on to say: "Hero is a caso in point. My eldest brother, who died in 1863, was at pea as midshipman on board a merchant vessel. Ho sailed under a drunken cap-' tain, who behaved to him with horrible j cruelty. Ho got the seeds of consump tion on that voyage. While ho was at sea my mother was nursing her uncle, James Withers Marsh, and in tho very hour of his death tho old man, who had i been tenderly attached to my brother, , sat up and said aloud: 'Let the lad alone. Havo yon no bowels;' My mother asked him what he was thinking of, and he cried, 'That captain is ill treating poor Jaik horribly. Tho first ofiicer, a Mr. Mnndy, took . command cl tho ship when Captain Gregory died in delirium tremens and w&3 buried at tho Azores. Mnndy brought my brother home, and he was told tho story of the old man's dying words. He produced his own notebook and showed that on tho day of the old man's death ho had made an entry, be canso he intended to indict the captain ! for his cruelty en their return to a Brit ish part. What is most singular is that , when ho came to work out the differ- j enco of latitude he found tho entry in ; his private log and the time of tho old j man's words coincided to a moment There are thousands of such instances reported, and-i$ seems to me quite idlo to d'Tn" them as mere coincidences. "Coincidence has a very long arm indeed, i especially in drama and fiction. But I think it hardly reaches so far as that "Not very long ago," Mr. Murray j resumed, "I had a very curious personal experience. Two people had been dining i with rae one a very dear and intimate ' personal friend, the other a comparative , stranger. When they had left me, I dis- ; tinctly heard a personal conversation within my own mind. I do not pretend i that the words would have been audible J to anybody else. That would be non sense." But I heard it within my mind and recognized tho voices of the two men. They discussed my own character and the action I had taken about a cer- -tain matter at that time. The ccmpara- , tire stranger was critical and unfriend- ly, and my old friend fonght my cause ; with great warmth. I questioned him j afterward, and he assured me that such i a conversation bad taken place as ho and his convive had driven in the car- t xiage to the club from my house. " The novelist was hero asked whether j bo had met with any cases of the action ; of a dead on a living mind. He replied. Epeaking in an impressive and reverent tono of voice: "I am profoundly convinc ed, though I do not want to be regarded as a madman, that after his death my father assisted me in my literary work. , For a year or two I was profoundly con scious of it, and I wrote as if I wa3 ab solutely under his eye, and with an as surance of his sympathy and aid that, however conveyed, was absolute, "I bad an allusion to this kind of in fluence, " Mr. Murray continued, "in my book, 'Rainbow Gold.' There i3 a dialogue there with a great strong man who has committed some dreadful crime and is repenting of it, and tho question between tho talkers is as to whether thero is any knowledge of us on the part of the dead. And old Armstrong, a practical minded Scotchman, remarks that he cannot conceive of the souls of Bums and Shakespeare as spending their time in knocking devil knocks at the ta bles of noodles like a pair of demented postmen. 'But,' says he, 'yon can fan cy the spirit of a mother Baying to tho master seraph, "I have been behaving pretty well of late, and I would liko to go back to Castlo Barfleld and havo a . look at tho lad I left behind me," and ; the master seraph sayx, "Go to tho poor ; creature, go!" And you feel her near j you. and you say in tho blindness of : your mind, "Nerves." And you try to chaso your ptor old mother's soul away . from yon with a decoction of Peruvian bark.' " Aly Ambition. Algy Aw, can yon spare n' a few hundred to wuu ovnli to Lnunon? Father What's tho object? "Golf." "Goodl If you learn how to play golf, it may" "Oh, but I don't want to play it.
