A mob of whites and blacks bound her to a stake
and roasted her alive, despite her shrieks and

A post-mortem examination of the President's
body reveal the - fact that the surgeons had not
correctly surmised the track of the bullet. After"
fracturing the right eleventh rib, the ball passe
.through the spinal column In front of the spinal
cord, fracturing the. body of the first lumbar vel
tebra, driving a number of small fragments of the
bone Into the adjacent soft parts, and lodging lust
below the pancreas, about two Inches and a half
to the U-ft of the spine and behind the peritoneum,
-where It had become completely encysted. . The
immediate cause of death was secondary hemor
rhage from one of the mesenteric arteries adjoin
ing the track of the ball, the blood rupturing the
peritoneum and nearly a pint escaping Into the
abdominal cavity, . Thelougjiuppuratingchauuel
to the external wound (the supposed track of the
ball) was found to be due to burrowing pus. A
large abscess cavity, six by jour Inches, was found

the transverse colon. The autopsy shows that
