On the night of the 2.'5d instant, the opera house
at Nice, France, was the scene of a most terrible
disaster. Gas Had escaped from old pipes and
collected at the back of the stage, and it was
lighted in some mannr. An explosion followed,
and the theater was burned. The tttidiotice was
panic stricken, and the passage-ways wre soon
blocked. The weaker were trampled under foot,
and hundreds of persons wore burned, silly-nine
to death. Several members of the opera ompany
also perished.
The time has gone by, says the London Court
Journal, for actors to be sneered at a "rngtis and
