DAVID AND ANNA MATS ON-
By 3Xis. .rVlMK'nil Scott Suni'tvny,
Editor "New Northwest," Portland, Oregon,
WITH REAUTIFUL ILLUSTRATIONS, AND ELEGANTLY BOUNJ
A new epic, from a vigorous ami skillful pen, on a subject which occupies a large place In tbe
social discussions of the day. The subject Is taken from 2fr. Wbtttler's short narrative of "Da
vid Mataon," with which tbe reader is probably familiar. David Matson, a Merrimac sailor,
va captured by the Algeriues fdniinc one of bis voyages) and sold into slavery. After Baaay
years he obtained release and was on his way to tbe home of his boyhood, when he Ml In with
his old employer, who informed him that hi wife, believing him dead, bad remarried. aasl,
stunned by his trouble, he surrendered all claim as husband and father to the man who bast
stepped Into Ills place, and departed. Mis. Dunlway has found a theme in this aims with
which her heart beats In warmest sympathy, and her lines Sow on la the suss nth aaaanas in-
dieatt ve of the fullest accord. She picture the gentle, tender, trust nil Anna and the wily, oar
etou Pelatlah in vivid colon; ami how years of poverty and longing, and lb cries of the ban
gry boys, compelled poor Anna to yield to Pelatlah's importunity.
"Riso, rejoice.
My poor, aamated dove," said he,
" And look be nee forth lor love to me."
A little further on be says:
" Become my wife and you shall be
Made happy through prosperity,"
Whlkvlfibe persists in declining his advances,
vation and eold. And this Pelatlah was a "deacon,"
" In exhortations deep and loud."
The wanderings of David, his captivity, release, hapless interview with Pelatlah. discovers
Anna's second wifehood, and his sad going bark to Algeria, are all told so pathetically tbatosnr
eeliugsa'e deeply enlisted. No one, with any true sentiment, can read the poem without ha-' .
lag thoroughly stirred. Tbe illustration are In admirable keeping with tbe paasagea they am
designed to portray, and a fine engraving of tbe author I a fitting frontispiece. The subject
spirit. Are and passion of tbe poem should give it an extensive reading, aside from the bttarcat
which tbe literary reputation of tbe author must awaken in iu As a specimen of haps laaklm.
the volume is eertalnlt beautiful, and would adorn any center-table, , '
