FRIDAY FEBRUARY 0, 1874. HOME JEWS. Bradley, Marsh & Co. are very busy refitting the extensive building ou the corner of Front and Stark streets, for merly occupied by O'Connor & Ma larky. See their ad., and call and see their goods. If you want to employ a dress-maker whose flU are perfect, prices reasonable and sewing excellent, you cannot do bet ter than to visit Mrs. Galloway on Third street, near B, where you can be accom modated just to the liking of any hon est and reasonable woman. Next Thursday evening will complete Mr. Condon's course of ten lectures on Cieology at Masonic Hall. This course has been exceedingly interesting and in structive throughout, engaging the at tention of a large audience almost every evening. Mr. ('. may congratulate him self upon his success in Portland. McCormick's Directory for 1S74 has been laid upon our table. Tills book is really a mater-piece of its kind. As compared with the Directories of former years It is an excellent evidence of the growth and improvement of our city, with which its publisher has steadily kepfpaee. YVchavn't time to do it justice, livery body should liave a copy and in scribe upon the back, "Inquire within for anything you want to know." Toast and Tea. The centennial tea celebration in Port land was brought to n closo at the Ma sonic Temple on Saturday evening. There was not so large an audience s did honor to the occasion at Faneail Hall; Oliver Wendell Holmes, Mr. Em erson, and Mr. Fields were not there, to attract by their presence and charm by their eloquence, as at Boston. But the object or the two gatherings was the same partly to celebrate, after the lapse of a century, the most momentous event in the Nation's history, and partly to aid the movement which would se1 cure for the women of these States the political equality and independence se cured so long ago for the men. And, indeed, there were great men at the lit tle centennial gathering in Portland, at jcusc meir worus were, anu mat not in the form of letters of apology, but in something more lasting and to the pur posein words that have passed Into the literature and the hearts of the neonlo. It was a feast of reason and a How of soul, isot many came to it, it is true, though many were called, and all were welcome; but there were men and women enough to form a pleasant party over mo toast anu tea, anu to make it worm the whileof the promoters of the meeting to entertain them. Mark Tapley him self could not have looked with more complacency on the eninty benches than did Mrs. Duniw:.y, nor could he have done belter under the circumstances than she did in the con esiontiiat if she and her friends had not been favored witli the largest of Portland audiences, they had been honored with a goodly representation of the brains of the town. There were no programmes, and the en tertainment wa-. more of an impromptu character than that of the previous evening; but everything went smoothly enough, and altogether a treat was pro vided which a larger crowd should have shared, but which the the small audi ence did not fail to appreciate, applaud and be thankful for. bulletin. The principal of a young ladies' semi nary up town, where especial attention is paid to deportment, was horrified the other day to lind the big girls playing "leap-frog" iu the back yard. The read ers of the Time will remember when General Kilpatrick returned from Chili, three years since, of his having a re markable operation performed upon him by a physician in New York, who re moved a large fleshy formation from the General's neck, by filling it full of nee dles and then attaching a galvanic bat tery to it.
