Last week a one-armed man who has for some time resided on a farm in Center Precinct, came to town and got six bottles of whisky, the absorb! lou of which put the devil in him and made him ripe for mischief. But this must have been meaner than most of whisky, for it caused him to go iiome, pull his wife out of bed, and menace her life with a butcher-knife and finally beat her with his list. But there was a rescuer at hand, in the shape of a big brother, who came on the scene Just about the time the one-armed man was successfully 'getting away" with tho defenceless wife in elegant style. The brother bore In his hand a fence-rail which he used successfully on the nearly victorious husband and John Barleycorn, and caused them to cease beating the woman and beat a retreat. It is said that the valiant husband and heroic protector of woman was so mucti airaiu or that rati and the bier brother who wielded it that he has left the country for the country's good. It will be well for his wife and children if he never returns. Albany jjemocrat. One's Mother. Around the idea of one's mother the mind of man clings with fond affection.' It is the first dear thought stamped upon our infant heart, when yet soft and capable of receivinc the most profounuimnressions. anil all the after feelings are more or Jess iigut-in comparison. Our passions and our wilfulness may lead us far from tho object of our tilial low; we may become wild, ucau-strong and angry at uer counsels or opposition; but when death has stilled her monitory voice, and nothing but calm memory remains to recapitulate iier virtues and good deeds, affection, !:ke a flower beaten to the ground by a rude storm, raises up her head, and smiles amidst ner tears-. Arounu mat idea, we nave said, the miudclincs with fond affecton; and even when tho earlier period of our Joss forces memory to be silent, fancy takes the place of remembrance, and twines tho Image of our departed parent with a garland of graces and beauties and virtues, which we doubt not that she possessed. Dr. Hamlin, or Marysvllle, Cali fornia, told me that tho child had better have died, as he would be afflicted all his life with sores of a scrofulous nature, which he consid ered Incurable. A number of our best physi cians had endeavored in vain to give the child relief. At the time I commenced giving him Dr. llorzeau'.s Small-pox Remedy the child was unable to open his eyes, his face was a com plete mass of Inflammation and corruption running from both cars.
