FRIDAY.. JANUARY 23, 1S74. WILL THEY DO IT? X IirLIVZRED BY C W. ST AST, AT GOOD TEMPXAKS' HALL, JAXCAET 17, IS71. There are two questions that the American people must and will settle; they are man's right to get drunk and woman's right to vote. The same Influ ences that upholds the former, opposes the latter. The liquor Influence is felt and ac knowledged by the politician, states man and priest. Before the throne of King Alcohol all bow the knee in weak submission. Temperance, we are told, ia an old and threadbare subject Yes, it is an old subject; as old almost as me worm ttseir, but by no means threadbare. Ever since old Nick tempted mother Eve In the garden of Eden, there has always been a continual warfare between temperance and in temperance. Temperance societies exist edlongbefore the soilof America was pol luted py Bourbon whisky, Holland gin or2ew England rum. Long before nice young men smoked cigars, or old women consoled themselves with snuff and pipes, priest and kings cried "woe unto him who pntteth the bottle to his neigh bors lips." The Roman, Groplau, Persian, Egyp tian and Chinese iitstorics for thousands of years back record the edicts and laws promulgated against drunkenness. Tb evils flowing from man's following the delusive pleasures of the intoxicating cup extend farther back than the mem ory of man; farther in tbo dim past than history itself can fully verify. No pen can describe the crime, miseries and sorrows that have been and are still being produced by man's fondness for the contents of the bottle aud decan ter. Bat notwithstanding all the lea sing and experience whfch theso bring Us, mankind still seeks after "That forbidden fruit, Whose raort&l taste brought death Into tb world, And all our woes." Men have always considered it their exclusive and divine right to get drunk as they just now consider it their ex-! elusive right to vote. So far did they carry out this principle in the olden days, that in the time of Romulus It was death for women to tasto the intox icating fruit of the grape, and near rela tives were permitted to kiss them to see If they had been drinking wino and when so found the law was rigidly en forced. But in these days woman has acquired man's right to get drunk, but to her honor be it said, drunkenness does not exist to the same extent among women as among men; hut they are fast becoming entangled in its meshes. Women have no political power, no right to vote, but they have a power greater than the ballot can givo that will do more to remove intemperance from our midst than any prohlb'torv law man can enact or enforce, If they will only use It, aud that Is social ogtra cini fur the man who drinks. Women endure poverty, suffering am' persoual abuse, yet they cling to the men who abuse them; but thanks to the common agitation of the day they are fast becoming aroused to a true sense of their false position. The husband may spend his means and bis time in the club or in the saloons while the home ones suffer and his wife waits with tear ful eyes for the coming of his footsteps. He may be a brutal, abusive, drunken sot, coming home night after night drunk, and the womau suffer In silence. But reverse it; let the wife be drunken and brutal, coming home night after night drunk, neglecting her home and children -how long do you think that family will hold together? Do you think tho man would suffer In silence would he not rather close the door on who, iu all tho pride of a mother's love, said, "I have raised six "stalwart sons and four daughters, aud there is not a beer drinker or wine-bibber atnonir them." What is the grand result upon which the eye of every mother, wife aud daughter in tho land ought to be fixed? Unquestionably the overthrow of the drinking customs of society is the 1c gltimate work of woman; and while women are clamoring and striving for Womau Suflrage, let them not forget woman's sufferings are caused by drink ing usages, and exercise that power and Influence which they possess in tho so cial circle and banish all that can intox icate and the intemperate from their presence. "Tis done," was tho exultant boast when our forefathers threw off the yoke of Great Britain and achieved our Nation's independence, and when women shall have done their duty, and aided men iu their battles to overthrow the despotism of strong drink, a now "Independence Day" will be declared and another exultant shout will break from the depths of the forests of Maine which will mingle with the gladdening strains wafted from the shores of the Pacific, until-tho whole Nation will rise up In one grand jubilee over the downfall- of the alcoholic demon, leaving a rich legacy of peace and happiness to future generations. In S74 Ingolf, a Norwegian chief, planted a small colony on that island, which .had been discovered a few years before. In about half a century many thousands of hardy settlers had established them selves on this cold and barren isle. At one time the population numbered no less than 100,000; but the inhabitants have suffered greatly from famines, epidemics, and volcanic casualties, and the number Is now reduced to about C0, 000. Iceland contains nn area of 40,000 square miles, of which the glaciers cover a surface of upward of 4,000 square miles; and there are thirty known vol canoes, of which eight have been active within a century. There are also numerous thermal springs, the princi pal of which Is the Great Geyser, In which the water, t a depth of seventv- two feet, Is thirty degrees above the ! ccanr. boiling point.
