Attest FRIDAY NOVEMBER 29, 1872. - "SOMENEWS. Baker City lias a local poet. Snow was ten inches deep at Fort ivianiatu last Week. La Grande precinct in Union county went unanimously for Grant and "Wil son. 'Uie Virtue quarts mill in Baker county is said to be running on very rich rock. Dr. AValts has begun a course of lec tures, 1G iu number, on the book of Revelations, nt Lafayette. The stages between Baker City aud ITmatilia and Boise City have lately been delayed on account of bad travel ing. George F. McCono has retired from the Corvallis Democrat. Mr. Head is now sole proprietor and will continue its publication. A fine school buildingor academy will be built atHillsboro next summer, add ing to the already growingprosperity of that village. Dr. Bayley informs theDanocrat that there is no foundation for the published report that the Orcgoii Central Military Jtoau company natl sold its land grant. The Corvallis Gazette has completed its ninth volume, and the editor will take a breathing spell until December 10th, when the next volume will begin The Democrat says: "The cruel man ner in which some bad boys abused a defenceless little girl in the eastern part of our city last Monday indicate that Albany is well supplied with young .noomunis." Rev. Thomas Condon of the Dalles, who was elected by the Legislature taie oeoiogist, filed his oath of office in the Secretary's office on "Wednesday of last week. Remember Mrs. Duniway's lecture at Oro Fino Theater Sunday evening on "The Social Evil and Christianity." Lecture commences at half past seven. Admission free. The Republican City Convention at Salem last Saturday evening made tho following nominations: For Mayor, Dr. H. Carpenter; for Recorder, C. S. "Wood worth; for Treasurer, A. X. Gilbert; for , -Marshal, J. A. Baker. During last week the days in South ern Oregon were warm aud pleasant and the nights cold aud frosty, which is cre ating some fear among stock raisers of a hard winter on stock on account of the frost killing the grass. Oakland contains two hotels, three stores, a drug store, blacksmith shop, saddler's shop, market, and many pri vate residences, while others are con stantly being erected. A flouring mill will be erected in the spring. TheGrand Jury of "Wasco county have submitted their report, which contains this flattering statement: "A state ot morals more favorable than has been obtained in the country for some time, cheering alike to the philanthropist and tax-pay e?." TheGrand Jury of Lane county In dicted four men for keeping open on Sunday a house for the sale of spirituous liquors, but the Court decided that the City Council of Eugene had exclusive jurisdictionof this matter, anddismissed the indictment. Business is livelier in Hillsboro at present than over before. Preparations for improvements on an extensive scale arc going on; about half a mile of side walk is being constructed, the steam flouring mill is runniug night and day, and everybody is rushing around gener ally. ine uregon city Jimerprisc says: "The fine dry weather for the last ten days has been very beneficial towards the work on the locks, and it is now in sucli an advanced stage that rains can not affect it materially. Tho work will be completed before the first of January, IS73." The Bedrock Democrat of the 20th says the weather at Baker City for the past ten days has been very cold, and the snow that had fallen still lays on the ground, and there is no appearance of its going off for some time. The fall has been an extraordinary one for East ern Oregon. "Jack Cade, orlhe Bondman of Kent," was produced at Oro Fino Theater Sat- j urday night to a well-filled house. Mr. ! "Waldrou as "Jack Cade," was excellent as he always is. The whole piece was rendered iu a manner creditable to the highestattainmontsof the dramatic art, and was worthy of a more lioeral pat ronage. A new "addition" has been added to Roseburg. The Plaindcaler says: "Mr. John "Wade, engineer, has fiulshed the surveys extending the town plat so as to include the field of Mr. A. Ross, in which the depot is situated. The addi tion will furnish plenty of room for the growth of the town as well as many eligible sites for business and dwelling houses. The articles of incorporation of the following companies have been filed in the office or the Sectetary of State at Salem: "ThcBuffcrm Printing and Pub lishing Company-incorporators1 J.N. D,0ll). X- Denny and H. "W. Scott. Tho W illamette Real Estate Company -W. L. Ilalsey, H. Thielson and James G. Hughes, incorporators." Tho offices of both companies are located in this city. The Plaindcaler says: The slille on the Rico hill has been removed. On Tuesday, the 19th inst, the Portland train passed through to Oakland, and the construction train to Roseburg. "We learn that it is the Intention to crib the Quinn cut, in order to prevent slides in tho future. Some difficulty has been experienced! nM lie delivery of freight at Roseburg, from tho fact that there is a3 yet neither depot or agent. The frame of the depot is now up, and in a short time the difficulties will be removed." From the Sentinel: "The past week has been a memorable one in Eastern Oregon. Earlier than ever before snow made its appearance on the Blue Moun tains to the depth of six inches, but a short respite was granted by the ele ments. On Sunday last the snow and wind started in with a vim. It con tinued snowing until on the mountains about sixteen inches had fallen, while here in the valley we had plenty and to spare. Tho storm, as near as we can learn, is universal. There is good sleighing from "White's, at the foot of the mountains, to the Dalles, at which latter point on Monday last there was nine inches."!
