FRIDAY.. -NOVEMBER 15, 1672. HOMEHEWS. The Escaped Nun liatl tremendous Bouses nt Salem. Tlie telegraph line is in operation to St. Joo on the Yamhill. ' The farmers ot Washington county aro all busy putting in grain. The firemen of Eugene City will have a great ball on Christmas. The Oregon Presbytciy at Salem ad journed sine die last Tuesday. TheState library has received mother volume of Patent Office Reports. The public school of Dallaslias been discontinued, in consequence of the lack of funds. Frank E. HixlRkin has resigned his position as local reporter on the Salem Statesman. The McKenzie Wagon Road Com pany's outlay for the past year amounts to $541 25; receipts, $240 SO. Miss Nellie Meacliam is the author ized collecting ahd soliciting agent for the Xbw Northwest at Salem. G. "V. Fletcher of Eugene City has been appointed and is now acting as route agent on the West Side railroad The second term of the La Creole AendetiYy oommonced on Monday, Nov 11. There were 180 pupils in attend ance. There are forty-seven cases on the docket for the November term of the Circuit Court for Yamhill county. Six are suits for divorce. Thomas Crawford and Franklin Moore have been re-appoiuted Agricultural Students under the new law, by Senator Patterson of Lane county. A regular weekly paper will soon ho issued at Empire City, Coos county The Jluetie has been published at that place occasionally heretofore. The Medical College of Salem Is pros peringlinely. The regular course of lec tures, six a day by the faculty, are go ing on regularly, with a large class in attendance. Roseburg is now improving rapidly, and if tlio Jieoessary amount of lumber could be obtained many new buildings would bo erected. At the present time there is not a vacant house in town. This (Friday) evening Mrs. Wnldron will take a benefit at Oro Fino Theater. Tins lady should have a crowded house, and we have no doubt she will have one. "East Lynue" will be producd on this occasion. Grand Master, T. MeF. Patton, has issued the necessary dispensations for two new Masonic Lodges in this State. One to be located at Gardiner City, Douglas county, and the other at Tilla moch. The new lodge at Gorvals, for which a charter was granted at the last annual convocation, was instituted aud the proper officers installed a few even ings since. The prospects arc very nat tering for them. At a meeting of the incorporators of the Union University Association, held last week at Eugene City, Messrs. J. 2L Thompson, J. J. Walton, Jr., Wm. J. J, Scott and B. F. Dorris were appointed a committee to open books and receive subscriptions to the University Fund. A meeting was held Friday evening and a committee was appointed, consisting of Messrs. E. L. Bristow, Dr. A'. W. Patterson, Vm. J. J. Scott, J: G. Gray and B. F. Dorris, to receive propositions for grounds for the location of the Uni versity. Parties in Eugene City have com menced in good earnest the construction of aood ron(l 3 mineral hot spring whioh has been found about sixty miles east of that town on a tributary of the McKenzie fork of the Willamette. The Guard Bays: "The work of opening a road to it from the McKenzie bridge was begun sometime since, and two weeks ago a mechanic, with tools aud supplies for the winter, left here to erect a bath house and other buildings neces sary at the spring. No thorough chem ical analysis of the water has, we be lieve, been made, but simple tests show it to contain at least eleven of the most essential elements of the famous mineral waters ot Eurqpo and America, promt nent among which may be mentioned soda, chlorine, arsenic, magnesium, sul phurand iron. There seems but little doubt that the McKenzie rogon "will soon become, like the White Sulphur region of the State of irginia, the sail itarium of a large extent of country." Stealing a Musical Box. A thief in Calcutta latelv stole a musical bos, thinkiiitr nrobably, from its ornamented ror!nr. Hint, it was a iewcl case. Hav Ing got off safe with his prize, ho made his wnv to "Wellesley square, where in the shrubbery grows a certain large and bushy shrub. Close to this i.s the Malice who innfcs nffnr the srrounds. The thief sat down in the shadow of the bush and nuM in nirk the lock. The lock, however, was the spring to set the wheels going, so that all of a sudden the nornliea tinei nearu ins junci ". gin, in a lively manner, to play, "The Wind that Shakes the Barley." He liimnwl mi. finnf the bewitched box into the bush and fled. Meanwhile the Mallee woke, listened yes his busli was resonant with sweet sounds. He sat up; cold persniratlon burst out upon him: the bush which he had attended from its twighood, which he had watched with all a Mallee's pride, was certainly bedeviled. The tune stopped click, click and then began "Mabel alse." This was too much for the Mallee, who fled from the accursed spot to the police inspector. Swiftly the pair returned to the trarden. MiiHnndr approached the tree just In time to hear the musical box, which had IlfltV Will A through his re)crloirc, rattle oil the hist uar oi a comic song. TUe inspector re coirnized the sound, dived into thclmsli and extracted the musical box. Pioneer of India. There aro over 450 teachers in the Public Schools of San Francisco. 400 of these teachers are women. A Chicago woman, anxious to have her daughter get along creditably In "jogrlfy," writes to the teacher request ing her to 'take the hide clean often her" if she dpn't study. "A young widow" advertises in a Cincinnati paper that sho has an in come or $3,000 a year, aud will marry any man, young or old, who possesses the same means, and can produce a cer tificate of good character. A young lady at Council Bluffe, being Informed by her "feller" that he in tended to cease his attentions, cow-hided him round the room, aud, as ho sprang through the open window, told him, with a parting lick, that that would teach him to be more careful for the future not to trifle with a gentle and loving heart.
