LESTER FRAKER STABBED AND ASSAILANT ESCAPES. Fraker Will Not Tell Who Slashed Him, and the Whole Affair Is Somewhat Mysterious — Wounded Man Had a Narrow Escape From Having His Jugular Vein Severed —An Old Grudge Supposed to Be Responsible. Lester Fraker, well known in Pen dleton and vicinity, is carrying a bad cut around with him as the result of an altercation in the Red Front sa- loon Saturday night. As the story goes. 1 Fraker was in the saloon at the bar ’ when a strang- er came into the room i and asked for a drink. Fraker said I something to the man. which was not noticed, when the speaker hit the newcomer over the head with a pair of spurs which he had in his hand. The stranger stepped back and drawing a knife made a lunge at Fraker. catch ing him across the face, inflicting a deep gash along the jaw bone. Had the cut been an inch lower the wound would have been fatal, as the knife would have severed the jugular vein Fraker was taken to a drug store and his wound dressed, but he would make no s'a.ement as to the identity of his assailant, and as the latter had escaped immediately after the cui ting, no attempt was made to arrest him. It is said that the two men had trouble some time previous, and that the cutting was the result of an old feud. Fraker is a half-brother to W J. Furnish, of this city.
