The office force does not know the exact amount, and will not for a week or so. The office safe is full of letters and statements with checks and orders attached for payment of taxes by those who were unable to reach the city in time to get their rebate, and so sent the amount through the mail. As much of the time of the clerks as possible will be spent on this pile of correspondence until all has been cleared out of the way and the re ceipts sent back with the rebate marked. In the meantime, the office is taking no money for taxes, or at least is writing no receipts, until the rebate work is out of hand. It will take several days to get this part of the work closed, as the taxes repre sented by the letters amount to sev eral thousand dollars, made up prin- cipally of small statements. RETURNS FROM FUNERAL. E. B. McFarland, of Adams, Attend ed Funeral of Brgther, Who Was Drowned In Snake River. MARKETS ARE DEAD FAR AS CONCERNS CHANGES. The Only Thing That Has Happened Lately Is Fresh Eggs — Almost a Dead Calm In the Wheat Market— Beef Market Extremely Slow and Governed by Local Demand. The market is a dead one tbis w eek as tar as' any chauges are con- cemed. Fresh eggs are bringing the farmers 16 2-3 cents a dozen, and that is about the only thing that has happened in the last five or stx days. All the other prices are the same, and there is not any likelihood of a change for some time to come The wheat market is so quiet that the exporting companies do not see the necessity of informing the buy- ers of the price half the time, and they have to telegraph back to And out, if they happen to want to know, which is but seldom. Beef is selling as fast as the peo ple want a little meat to eat, but no faster. The buyers are shipping only such amounts as the market de mands. and the farmers are not at al) anxious to sell, for the quotations are low They prefer to hold a time, and take the chances of bettering the figures offered. E. B McFarland, of Adams re turned today from Lewiston. Idaho, where he attended the funeral of his brother. Ephrlam McFarland, who was drowned in Snake River, with another brother. Bert McFar land. on November 27, while rescu ing machinery from the wrecked steamer in the river, at Mountain Sheep Rapids. The remains of Ephrlam McFar land were found only last Monday, near Lewiston, after having been in the river for almost four months, and the other brother has not yet been found. Mr. McFarland has written to all the officers of counties bordering on the Snake and Columbia rivers, to be on the lookout for the corpse, when the high water of spring starts, as he thinks the body has been washed down the river and may be found many miles below Lewiston. Bert McFarland, the brother still missing, was 27 years old. weighed ibout 160 pounds, and had amalgam fillings in his teeth, with also two Richmond crowns in his upper front teeth. He was a veteran of the Spanish war, having served three »ears in the 3.r>rfi regiment, company I. Any information concerning a corpse of this description would be appreciated by E B McFarland, of Adams. Ore. WILL HAILEY SERVE? e e e e • e IS STRONGLY URGED TO TAKE NOMINATION AGAIN.
