Jn the former variety coalescence of the vesicles or pustules kes phu-e. The continent totm is •neraBy fatal. A petUM who is exposed to the dis ease, if Ire takes it, generally shows the symptoms of the forming stage in from nine to fifteen days. The disease is usliervd in by a chilli in tbc great majority ot ease»,'and the chill is usually marked, more *> than in other eruptive fevers. In MOM cases a series of chills occur, alterna ting with tliisbes- of heat. Fever fol lows, a<a-oni|>anltsi with more or I»»* I perspiration. The latter is apt to eon- | tinue to recur more or less frv*|uently up to the maturity of the eruption—a feature dfoUncttve ot this as cotni*arvd with the other eruptive fevers. l’he»_,__ .n»ao s»m aaauii temperature of the Iwxly is the criter- FIRE-ARMS AND AMMU ion of the intensity of the di-case. Tin NITION. healthy temperature of the body is J deg. but in the primary fever of small pox from !<H to 106deg. Nausea i and A-omiting are also prominent symptoms in this stage; the tongue l*-- conn-s coated, pain is felt on pressing upon the stomach, the pstieut is gen erally constipated but diarrh.ra is some times present, especially in children. In this fever, pain- in the loins are on»-! of the best diognastic guides. Convul sions generally attend the development of this disease in children. Tin' dura tion of this stage is generally two days; on the third day the symptoms appear. "The treatment of small-pox em braces measures having direct refer ence to the eruption. There is no sjm - eial treatment. The disease Moon will run its course, and hence the expect ant plan is to be pursued. The intens ity frf the fever may be lessemsl bv cold drink«, ice-wateraml lemonade, al lowed as freely as the stomach will permit, and by sponging tile body w ith cold or tepid water. The latter is not objectionable ou the ground of inter fering with the apis aram e of the erup tion. Tt>e freest poasible"v*entilatif)n is of f»|Ms ial importance.,r There is only one means of protec tion from this fearful disease, and that is vaccination. It was discovered by Jenner in 17'JH after a series of observa- tionsaiifl experiments which had oc- enpied his attention for twenty ye: is. An imjs.rtant question is to what ■ x- tent does vaccination protect those vaccinated, in nearly all cases vac cination for a time at feast is a utiiver- sal and alfsolutc protection against eanall-pox. In eases of persons vac- einated, as regards susceptibility to nniall-|s>x it is precisely a» if natural or innoculatcd small-pox had Ix-en ex- nerienced. Ina minority of eases flic protect if >n is only partial; but the dis ease is materially modified fonstitut- ing what Is called 'iirh>l‘ii<l. or infsli- ■ed small-pox. However, it is a con- beded fact among the lea.ling mcflir-.-il num of both continents that vaccination pro|>erly perffirmefl is a safe anil sure ncotection against sinnll-jsix. In some Instances the vaccine mutter w ill not lake until several trial« have been I made, but the mere fact of its not tak- I Ing Is t that the person vaccln- nated t contract the disease. J-he system may not be In a condition |o absorb the vaccine virus. Now In pegard to the time which should inter- nene between vaccinations, the highest authorities flitter. I will now in a brief manner describe it to a tinal termination. The duration of the stage of invasion is from two to four flays, of the stage of eruption, about five days, of the stag, of suppuration four to five days, and of the stage of dissieatiou rt to iodays, making tne duration of the disease, ending in recovery from seventeen t<> twenty-four days. In mild, uneom- plicated ea-es. the recovery, i» usually rapid, but the tsfnvalescence is imlefin- itelv prolonged by ulcerations of the skin and complications. B. Hunt, Surgeon of the vol- unteers anil Medical Director, in the Army of the Southwest fluring the late Civil War. says: “Small-pox is not contagious in Its early stages. The susceptibility to the disease ex ists in all sge». but is greatest in ehild- ren ami old people.
