In the Inst issue of the AVtr Xorthxat we "aoto the followinc, clipped from a letter of 'Airs. Doniway written from Pendleton: The Tribune, a lire weekly Republican "paper. Is friendly to oar mission, but the East Oiiegosiax, J. II. Tamer's paper, is tn the rampage after us, as ushal, with the classic vernacalar of the Barbary Const The rood citizens are ashamed of tho tbinij that thinks itself an editor, and which, with Ihe sublime impudence of the pappy that barked at the moon, sent ui a copy of its paper containing its scnmlity if itk itt amt jtlisAOit. It is easy enongh to furnish un answerable arguments in favor of richt and justice, bet it is impossible to furnish those voters who lack understanding with suffi cient brains to comprehend them. If Mr. Taraer wants any more apologies printed in the Xae Xoriforeri. we'd advise him to dismiss that poor apology for an editor or take his own same from the columns 6T Ills paper." Before commenting npon this tirade we would remark that we are loth to eater up oa personalities -with a we -won't say lady aor woman, even nondescript in woman's clothes. Not that we have any admiration for the Individual (she calls us "thing") in question, but because we bare too ranch re. sped for womankind to fce instrumental in bringing any one resembling, if not com posing, an element thereof before the pchlie in en unpleasant attitude, perhaps. We should not do so in this instance bad not Hrs, Duniway offered the provocation and TolcBtatily placed herself in the field. As to the East Oregoxux being "J. H. Turner's paper," we have only to remark that snch a misstatement was either made under a mktake of bets, or intentional with the object of belittling onr opposition. J. H. Turner owns just one half of the East Oeegoxias and L. B. Cor owns just the other half. As to the statement that "the good citizens are ashamed of the thing that thinks itself an editor," wc would say "the good citizens," or at least those whom wc believe to be "good' have a strange way of expressing their sentiments. If abase has overtaken any of them, wc assure you, Mrs. Dnaiway, there is no outstanding debt. Our associates, we do not believe, are asham ed of u. and if others are. we say it is a case of Eoctnality. Bat perhaps your ideas of goodnest in citizenship do not accord with - ours, and indeed there is ground for so thinking. The simile of "the psppy that larked at the moon" is good. We did not see any particular resemblance in this am paibyms b'ped to the noon, bat presume ij must exist somewhere as the 'arguments" era an alia;; therefrom appeared to us at the time to be all moonshine. And this "thing" "seat ns a copy of its paper containing its scurrility itith itt eoxplimaiU." We al ways send a copy of our paper to any visit, ing gaUleman or lady knoprn to either pro prietor ol the E. 0. and humbly apologize for having made a mistake in the present instance, as we fear we must have done, as this is the first presentation which has met with each a reception. Begirding "scur rility. 2Jrs. Duniway. we would advise yoa to go a little slow, for you are on daageross ground. Perhaps yoa do not comprehend the language used by yourself ia your bar Tangoes to the dear people, or you would sever have allnded to "scurrility." But that unfortunate Jailing of yours, and we speak the universal sentiment of everyone whom we have beard allude to the subject, and some of them strong woman safTragitta, injured your cause in Umatilla county more than yon can repair in two years. To call everyoBC oppoeed to you a lool for sot doing as you do, or an idiot because he doesn't see things as you see them (which you do in effect); or to characterize the mothers, wives, or sisters of the opponents of woman suffrage as simpletons, ia not calculated to make you friends. All this mixed ia with poor oratory, bad acting, coarse jokes aadwlgar and slang langoaget appears to be a little bordering on the "scurrilous," aad we have heard it strongly condemned by those whom you probably coasider your friends, and commended by aoae. Perhaps, however, it effects your cads better thaa a decent mode of proce. dare would, for the truth is, Mrs. Duniway, car idea of year position is just this : Yoa are act sincere and honest in your pro fessions, but you have undertaken this en terprise from a deair for notoriety, and for the money yoa make out of it in your ap peals to the charity of the people. We do sot speak enviously of you at all in this last Matsmeut either, for upon every occasion tfesl we heard yon speak we donated yon, we believe, as liberal an amount as any one preseat,on the principle that we always give to beggars. Coaceralng your statement that, "it k easy enough to furnish unanswerable args meets in favor of right and justice, bet it is impossible to famish those voters who lack UBdersUadtag with sufficient brains to ioomprebead them," we would reply that if yes eoasiiter aaylbing yon may have said here as aa "aaanswerable argument'' we are sot surprised at your not being able to farai-frh brains to "those voters who lack Baderataadiag," aad we will say there are very maay of them in Umatilla County. As to the matter of "Mr. Turner's wanting any mere apologies printed in the JTeu JTortJi vol," jt is probably sufficient fcr those "lacking aaderstaading" to say that he has sever asked or wanted any apology to our knowledge, and if the Has Sorilaixtt had coafined itselt to the facts and the truth there would have been no occasion for an apology heretofore. And as to your advice to dismissthat poor apology fo enedllor." we would answer he can do so by paying to the aforesaid "apology" $1250 in gold coin of the United Slates, and aot other 'wise; ' 1 ' la coaclosion and by way of a littlg, ad. vice, Mrs. Duniway, rc yonld say that to injure the success vt an innovation, oa a general rule, tho leader therein should be j one to inspire, respect, admiration and en , thuslasm you do not. Therefore, if you areuuuuiiuiu wuMimiiuua iu juui fits- fessions yon can best serve your cause by staying at home and pursuing the calling for which yon intimated nature had more peculiarly fitted you, thaa art has for effect, ing political revolutions. We think this advice w ill be endorsed by the tight (S) mem bers of the Umatilla County Woman Suf frago Association at its next session, should it ever meet again. Perhaps this language may not be pleas ant to your ears. Without provocation it would not have been written, but when you voluntarily throw down the gauntlet and tako a man's place in the lists you must be prepared to take your shot with the sauie degree of torridity that he would be liable to expect. Jtaltroatl. Oa December 21th Mr. II. Tbielson ef Portland, chief engineer of the Oregon Railway and Navigation Co, was In Feo. dleton and upon his professing a deslr to talk railroad, a meeting of our citizens was hastily called and well responded to. The large dining hall of the Villard House was filled at the appointed hour by our repre sentative men and property hold era. Mr. ThteUon said that he had come to speak to the people of Pendleton concerning the course of the road sow In process of con struction across the Bine Mountains. He said that he wished if possible to locate the road through so thriving a town as Pendle ton and with that object iu view had caused the survey of the route down the Umatilla river to be made. This work having been carried sufficiently far to test its practicaUl. ity he was prepared to say from the reports of his field engineers that he considered the . . . ' .. ,, . . route entirely practicable, and while it j wouia lorce nts company to auuiuonai ex- pease to follow the river,he could jive great encouragement (but could not at the time make any official promise) that this course to the woods and pursuit ha been so far ua wocld be adopted, provided the people along ssccessfcL the route would contribute the desired as- j Moriarty. who bad been assaulted by sistance. Upon receiving the report of the re sult of their efforts, Mr. Thlelscn said he would at once announce officially as to whether the road woula be located through Pendleton or not. We deem it unnecessary to impress upon oar readers the many advantage certain ts i accrue, not only to Pendleton but to the whole scope of country alenr which the road would run, from its location through our raid:. We thick every one must see this, and we would only urge upon them not to let the golden opportunity pass, for 1: nay not come soon again. e hope to see all interested parties come forward and liberally respond to the very reasonable preposition Bttde by Mr. Thklsoa. fromIhe capital WAsarycTos, D.
