A correspondent of tbo Country Gen' tlcmcH sara ; "Pip is a disease of fowls appearing as a horar jwlliclo, that grows oa tho tips of Uioir tongues. Tlioro is a euro for this as well at other diseases. Formerly, before disco of fowls wero inquired into as Uiej arts in the present daj, erorj"tlting that affected joang fowls was oitber tbe nip or tho gapes. Diseases of older fowls, and thoir cause, won nerer inquired into. They died, to be snrv, but that was unavoidable ; thu Talue was small and tho loss was not felt. But since more valuable birds hare been introduced, clcoor observations hare been made, and hence thero aro manj discov eries of can ao and oflect. Pip is a very ancient diaoaw, and I supioaol it hall gono out of existence. I bavo met with ooly ono exm and that was rears ago. Low ronditton and ferer are tho cause, and boing sick the bml has no desire for food, llemovo the muse, and tho fowl will generally recover, if not too far gono with weakness. The changes of tbe sea sons from winter to spring and from fall to winter, affects fowls More, crkap, than many are aware of. Only neglected fowls satfer froa each disease. The polliel ou the tongue is a result of dis arrangement of the system, brought oa by weakness and exjMNHire, and insuffi cient food, or food of a kind that the fowl cannot convert iatu health and strength. Although requiring both animal aad vegetabt diet, grain is tho Ktsple ; clean, sweet, pure kernels are boat ; any mssty, asouldy or heated grain is not suitable to ft-ed fowls. If strict notice be taken, it will be found that tbe most diseascc break out in neglected broods, and there is no remedy for tho affected ones. A fowl that has ge ne through a coarse of doctoring, al though rt-covering apparently, is nearly worthies.' Dcr Weatheb Watejux. The more a garden is irrigated oa the surface, the ore it seems to require, and the harder the surface, unless stirred, appears to be. Experienced rardoners tale a hoe and draw the earth from about the plant to watered, making a basin several inches deep and perhaps two feet across. This is mru mi (11 sp wtiu w&vcr, anu leit BBtil every drop has soaked into the soil. If it seems best, the bole may be nllcl again, and &gain, Ratil the plant has had sufitcient. the oieBius is then left for a day or so, BBtil the sna has dried the surface somewkat. Thea witn a hoe loosen the soil, bet carcf cllr, so as not to cut the root, and draw the dry earth j lack into the bole agate. This is the best war to stimulate tbe growth of tomatoes, cabbagus, peppers, egg-plant aad other late summer Trcctable. hose value depends krselr ntxra their being kept in a constant state of growth and health. Fanny Saving of Fnaay 2Ce. Leaving Jlr. Carleton's store I came out in front of tho Fifth Arenne Hotel again, and here I met Welsh Edwards, a treu-xnown physiognomy in the Jiew York theatrical world. A man with a portly presence and with a splendid, rich, bass voio?, a delight to the ear, as his good-nataml face is to the eye of the popular audiences who adore him. With out being in any sense a celebrity, Welsh Edwards is a mas whoso serrices are constantly in request in New York. Next year he is engaged at the Hadisoa Square Theater, a place whieh I find is regard sd or ew iorx actors in the light of a pro fessional Mecca. Welsh Edwards' talk is principally about John T. Bayxscnd's failure in London. He attributes it to the xor company which surrocsded him. I disagree with bLa, and think it simply becanse the play, as such, is a very poor one. asd because the sareassi on onr political system ia not understood uiere. T played a part ia the piece." aars Edwards, rolling oat the words in his sonorous voice, whieh is perfectly dis tinct and delichtfal over nil the 'noise ami clatter of the street; "when it was first produced in New York, over there," says he, pointing, "at the Park Theater, I played the cross old Judge remem ber? Yes, well; Sir. Clemens,' asd Iris eye twinkles at the mention of Stark Twain's aame, "was at all the rehearsals. The heroine died at the end of the piece.' as it was thea written. Yes, she had murdered the man, her betrayer, vsi brouefct ia jrailtr. and died of heart disease. We old actors thought it an odd idea So cod a comic piece with a death; aad at the last rehearsal Mr. Clemeas, aad his zaoeth widens into a broad grin, as he repeats name of the author of "Inaoeents Abroad,' "caste oa the stsze and said: JLucs aad gea liars en, it has been suggested,' aad tha actor's rich voice sinks into a n amorous, imitative drawl, 'that this lady should be brought ia innocent, and that she ahoald cot die. She is undoubtedly guilty. She has killed a maa. But I don't care if she has killed forty men. Well bring her ia innocent, if the aadi ence will. And if they don't laugh at the end. Edwards ('I was ranch portlier thea thaa I am now he explains), 'shall crawl over into the orchestra aavl creep back throogh the narrow raasi ch.ru' door.' " The conclnsioa of the nazraixre, broken by his laahter all through, brings tear of Mirth into the jovial Tlespiaa a eye. I feel I am scarcely respottsive eaongh, though I am a great admirer of Mark Twain's writings; but this story shows the advantage of getting; up a ropataiiea of being a very fanny fellow. It reaistis rna of aa isadeax told as by s gentleman, oaee of a ivrTTy effect of heasoroas prestige ta Artes&s Ward's cave. One 4sy a lot of "the boys" were sitting ta the bar-reoca at the Si. Ha said: "I aa going to New-ark." One nnasimoas burst of fasghter greeted this pungent sally. Thea eaaM a deathlike silence, wafting for tha cqcel. Again the eye twinkled, and the voice came fitfully, spasmodically: "lam going to -New-ark." As a match to a powder magazine, so this to this risibltst of thoso present. They squirmed; they held their sides; they wiped their eyes; they could scarcely swallow their what-will-yon-tskes for laughter. After the absorption of tho divers beverages Artemna west toward tho door. Every glance -was riveted oa the long, lank agora as it moved away. Once more the aieel-blse eye twinkled, tha thin-cut lh quivered, the metallic voice inciselr reft tha sin "Good-by, bop." said Axteraus; "T am going to New-ark." Yells of hyenas were as nothing coat pared. Policeman came ia sad threat ened to arrest tho load laughers for dis turbing the peace. Xettspaper LlaeL There can be no doubt, says tho Lon don Spectator, that libel is often a criminal offence, the libeller intending to tortnra or to hurt, and should l punishable as such. Bat there -can 1m no doubt, either, that the criminal law of libel, as it stands, is open to abuse and is abtuod. It is monstrous thaiaa. innocent man should be put in prisoa, as happened tbe other day, because while ho was abroad his aent had published, without his consent, or indeed against bis remonstrance, an unjustifiablo lfbL It is still mora monstrous that a share holder in a newspaper should be crimi nally liable because an editor, against whose appointment he votes!, has care lesslyadmittcd a letter containing a legal libel And it is most monstrous of ail, as we believe to be now the ca$ct th.ii- a part proprietor, precluded from inter ference br tiio very terms ot too .Bsirt- nership deed, should bo open to for tha act of agents he did not ape and cannot remove. The juries ia snob. extreme cases may bo trusted, but a pros ecution is in itelf a punishment, involv ing great annoyance and a heavy fine. And it is not expedient, in the general interest of tho country, which benet3 when scrupulous or even timid men are attracted into journalism, that a libel of tho lighter kind, a libel only construct ively malicious, should bo pnnished aa a serious offence. The actual offender, the person legally in charge of tho paper, er still batter, tho writer alone, should be crimiaallr responsible damages beiag qnito nnfuciont punishment tq the absent proprietor while tho criminal actios should bo confined to graver descriptions of libel.
