This thing was gone over four times,

The last seen of our traveling friend
he was standing on the wharf with his
baggage in his hand and a cart-load of
evee mud on his boots.

plunge, as persistent and progressive as

he may recover. Baker is a prominent
attorney, and defended Thurston and
cleared him when he was tried for mur

and officers were obliged to secure Thurs
ton to preretit the people from inflicting
smmmary punishment upon him.

Hatch, received by General Sheridan,

row has joined him with four companies,

paign. A later dispatch from him reports

world. He charged that Whittaker dis

perts, and drcunutantial evidence was so
strong that be should he tried for conduct
unbecoming a cadet and fur perjury.
Lieutenant Knight, counsel for Whitta
ker, then said that the recorder had given
his interpretations, but that vras no
reason why the court should accept them.
He denied that Whittaker was morbid.
He was cheerful and confident that there
was nothing to discredit his story. He
ridiculed the idea that Whittaker wanted
sympathy. His course in life bad been
creditable from boyhood. The paper on
which was a note of warning, was stolen
from Whittaker's room for fastening sas
pidon on him. In a sarcastic and amusing
way Knight directed the contradictory
evidence of writing experts. It was mon
strous to say that a young man jut enter
ing on manhood should be thought guilty
ofsuchacrime with nothing to gain br
it. The speech was able, legal" and logical.
