The building of Turpin A Bro., destroyed, was the well known "Castle Thunder" ot the war and used as a prison for federal and confederate prisoae rs. The total loss is estimated at $100,000 ; insur ance, 51,000. Grant and the Darlea Canal. Nrw Yotx. Aug. 26. "Since the early part of 1SGC, Grant has taken special interest in bringing about the neccessary surveys, and satisfying himself as to the results obtained, and as to the sufficiency of our information is relation to all routes supposed to be practical. Ho has full and minute knowledge of the ad vaatages and of the difficulties attending the construction of thecanaL All I have said relative to the Paris Congress and tho con struction of a ship canal has been presented to Grant; and also the difficulty now exist ing growing out of the action of tho Paris Congress in considering the question other wise than as an economic one, and h has been requested to aid and participate In the construction of a ship canal via Nicaragua, and asked to say whether if united by the board of directors of a responsible inter oceanic ship company having proper conces sions, he would strvo as president et the company.
