I bold that it has, the opinion of the old fossils to the contrary: and I will go further and assure yon that all cf its nominees will take their seats. The Question of the legality of the pledge of candidates to accept a redaction of salaries was settled by tho adoption of a resolution stating tbe pledge means that the candidates will not oppose a redaction of salaries to the amounts named in the several pledges, and that in no sense is the pledge intended as a bribe. Ho will con tinue the surrey next week in another direc tion, and ii now preparing his official report, which it is understood will indicate that ex tensive depredations have been committed in nearly all the logging districts on the Sound. It will also indicate that tho amount of val uable timber in Western Washington has been greatly overestimated, and that a strong toan m beiag made by certain parties to ob tata control of all timber tend not already appropriated. It would appear from present indications that there is i strong determina tion on the part of the government to put a stop (o timber depredations hero nad to the questionable acquirement of timber lands by individuals. rotecllBr tbe Harbor of Seattle. Tho Courtship of Bl&nquL The coartihip and marriage of 21. Bl&nqui, the French revolutionist, arc said to have been Terr romantic. "When only 19 ho became a tutor in an aristocratic family living near Toulouse. He fell in love with a young lady also residing in the chateau, bat she was wealthy, and he did not venture to dis close his devotion. For tx years lie remained silent, when at last alio dis covered his feeling, and returning it, be came his wife. Six years afterward the died. Blanqui still wears mourning for her. In 1S4S, at Iho Radical club he presided over, Le never took off the blacfc.gloTcs he habitually wore. These produced a curious effect when he ued gestures to emphasize any remarks he made in his somewhat shrill voice The&c gloves are of a eculiar make, and come high up tho wrist liko those of a lady. The reason for this singularity is that the determined conspirator still wears on his wrist the' bracelet of her he loved and still mourns. Opium In England. A statement, says tbe London Lancet, has lately been made to the effect that during the last two years the consuwption has bten induced by the restriction of the sale of intoxicating liquors by the early closinj of public houses. That the sale of narcotic drugs hasor Ute greatly in creased there is little reason to doubt, but it is rather to the hardness of the times than :o any restraint in the sale of driuk that the increased consawplTon of opium by the working-classes is to attributed. Opiura is cheaper than alcohol, and two pence expended on the lotmcr will give the latter. Nor, when first commenced, does its use prodace ruch. anpleaunt after effects as an intoxicating dose ol a! cohol. When yo9 ice a young man with a wild, haggard look negotiating for a ro-ing chair and a soap dish, you can know that his landlady insists on his replacing the lunmure he threw out ol his window at the cats the previaes night.
