Curious Stories of Smuggling.
- Perhaps tho oddest phase of smug
gling (for smuggling it really was) was
patent in a practice which prevailed for
several years in Dover, and was carried
on openly in full view of the preventives
and all the inhabitants of tho town.
About 1S19-20 the fashion carno up of
wearing Leghorn bonnets of exorbitant
dimensions. They were huge straw
plaits, nearly circular and averaging
about a yard in diameter; they sold in
England for two, threo or moru guineas
each, according to their quality, and
nearly lialf their cost was the duty paid
paid on importing them. Now, accord
ing to the law, duty is not demanded on
an article of dress worn by travellers.
A clever dealer in"Leghorns contrived to
profit enormously by this law. He
hired a troop of the poorest women and
girls ragged, squalid and wretched
looking creatures they were to be sure
and paid them almost a nominal fee for
accompanying him daily in his voyage
to and from the Trench coast, contract
ing with the captain of one of the steam
boats for season tickets for the whole of
them. The troop regularly left Dover
in the mornm with scarcely a kantuull
of bonnet on their heiads;hey dimLat
Calais, if they could afford to dine, and
came back in fEo afternoon, two or. three
score of them, each with a brah new
Leghorn of the fullest"duncnsions on her
head, the rag bonnet worn in the morn
ing being stuffed in their pockets. On
landing they were all marched to the
speculator's warehouse, denuded of their
1 usurious coiuures and dismissed tortus
day. A hundred times at least have I
seen these forlorn and- tattered puivey-
org ot iasuion bout going out and com
ing in, and I could tell the boat they
travelled bv, while it was yet miles
away, bv the straw-colored amber lines
which under a cloudy skv would glim'
mcr like a streak of sunshine ere the
hull of the vessel was- distinctly visible.
"A form or-nugghng, says a writer
in the Pall Mall Gazette, "which is not
likely soon to die out, is that practiced
by tourists, who think it allowaVe to
shirk paving dutv on things which tliev
have boucht for their orn use. Public
m-nls on this joint are slightly elastic,
and IUusm? ot Ui? pen tier sex are espe
cially apt to tirnik taut uothiug coxntiels
them to 'declare volumes of Tauchnitz,
cases of eau de Cologne, yards of Lyons
silk or pieces of Brussels lace. Here is
a story which will illustrate feminine
notions on this subject and jerhaps con
vey & moral: A Belgian bridegroom,
beinsr about to start for Paris on his
bridal tour, was informed, by his bride
that she thought of concealing several
thousand francs worth of lace about
her, hoping by its sale to pay the cost
of their journey. The bridegroom was
not smitten with this frugal project, and
pointed out tliat there were custom
house officers and a female searcher at
Ercquelines who were sometimes struck
with an unaccountable tancv for exam
ining pissengers' pockets. This he said,
being a timid man, and his bride, to hu
mor him, promised to give up her plan,
but then she secreted the lace at the
same time without telling him about it
2Tow, as tie train approached the
French frontier, the husband reflected
that if his wife was not searched, his
fears would be mocked at as having
been groundless, and be would start on
his maincd career with prestige im
paired. This was not desirable; rather
it was essential that he should from the
very outset assert his infallibility. So
when the train stopped at Ercquelines
and the passengers alighted the Belgian
bridegroom left his bride's arm for
a moment, and siding up to a doua
nier, whispered, 'I think if you search
that ladv yonder you may find some
lace.' The douanier winked; the happy
bnde was accosted with the invitation
to walk into ibe-female searchers room.
She turned tiale, tottered, but was led
away, and ve minutes later dismal
sounds of hysterics were heard. Then
the douanier reappeared, and said to the
horrified husband, 'Thank you, sir; its
a good capture. The lady will be taken
to prison, and hall the fine will go to
you. This was a'paiuful-adventure, but
it does not follow tiiatj all husbands are
so inconsiderate, nor Unit all ladies who
smuggle lace are caught"
A more amusing anecdote on this sub
ject was lately told at a public dinner
by Ferdinand DuvaL Prefect of tho
Seine. He .said that the octroi men of
Paris, who levy the municipal barrier
dues, arc a most vigilant set of fellows,
but that, havwg-boasted of their mentfl,
he (the Prefcji) had been caught. A
friend of his, residing at St. Cloud, has
made a small bet that he would intra
duce a pig into Paris in his brougham
without the octroi in en detecting it 3L
Duval took the bet, and strict orders
were given at all the gates of Paris to
look out for the brougham of the friend
in question. Vitbin less than a week,
however, the Prefect received the sum
of 60 centimes, being the .amount of
duty leviable on a pig, and a request to
ome and assured himself that the quad
ruped had been successfully smuggled
in. It turned out that the pig, lolled
and scalded, iiau been dressed up in
woman's clothes, and had been driven
into Paris seated triumphantly on the
box beside the coachman. Since then
the octroi men, it is said, stare with
some fixity at plump women when they
behold them on carriage boxes. Leisure

Electric Ught in Mines.
An article in the London Mining
Journal points out the peculiar advan
tages or the electric licnt lor use in
mines. It rould, says the Journal,
give the operators such a light as they
have never dreamed of, enabling them
to get a much larger quantity of coal in
a given time than it is possible for them
to bring down by the light of the lamp,
which, as is well known, suffices simply
to make tho blackness of tho working
place visible. Explosions would be all
but impossible, while the miners would
be better able to guard against the falls
of roof and coal

A Mosquito Factory.

have heard nsaay others like vnrtAi

taken it for granted that they were
species of earth worm. However, last
Summer I procured a glass jar and
sprinkled the bottom of it with
vcrr small quantity of sand and day.
I then half filed the jar with dear,
fresh water, and, after patting
dozea cf these words in the jar, I tied a
piece cf doth ever the rsouth and placed
it in a lirb airv place. The worms
were front half to three-fourths ef aa

of the jar, swim tnroogh the water bv a
rapid bending of the body backward er

surface of the water and float. ithtn
twenty-four hours after placing them in
the jar I noticed that they bad all gone
down to the bottom of that vessel and
had enveloped themselves separately in
a kind of temporary shell made of earth
and sand. In a few davs after this
saw one of these worms crawl oat or his
temporary house at the Lot ton of the jar
and swim to the surface of the water.
Here, after twisting about for a few

Appetites aud Habits Animals.
It is profitable and advantageous to
cultivate m domestic animals a love oi
home. Much time, labor, and anxiety
are often expended in looking after
wandering stock. A majority of cows
and horses thatvoluntarily, go astray, do
no because thcv find better food, more
attractive associates, or better treatment
abroad than at home. Kvery wise own
er or manager of stock may soon learn
by a few simple experiments that there
are several articles of food or relish for
which cows and horses have as great a
fondness as children have for cakes, jell
ies and candies. Horses, cows, and even
sheep enjoy fondling and a soft, loving
voice as much as do children. If to this
treatment be added, occasionally, sugar,
fruit, salt, confections, and tho like,
these animals will never forget the hand
that bestowed them, nor the place where
they were received. If, at the time of
the evening milking, the folding of the
sheep, or the stabling of tho horses, some
little delicacy is bestowed, these animals
will soon remember time and place, and
be theie with tho regularity of a hen to
her usual roosting-place. Indeed, the
apjKjtito of animals for saline and alka
line relishes seems so natural and strong
as to not only attract them, bnt to resort
to these places at any risk. Feeders of
stock, of large observation, inform us
that to mix salt and pure hard wood
ashes, in equal proportions of weight,
combined by barely enough water to
make them a solid mass, becomes a most
attractive relish for all domestic ani
mals. You cannot tell a man who is content
ed in tho world Merely by looking at
him. The neatest fitting boot oftoa
covers a raging corn.
An Amusing Theatrical Story.
'Yankee" Hill, a famous actor in the
lint half of the present century, used to
tell an amusing storv (which J. U.
Matthews retells in his article on 'The
American on the Stago in Scnlmers
for July), of tho carlv days of tho the
atre in thiscotintry. Hill onco "showed'

town in the western part of New York,
whero no theatrical performance, had
ever been given, llo found me auui
onco assembled with the women seated
on one side of tho hall and tho men on
the other, exactly a, they used to sit in
church; and throughout tho play the
insAt solemn silence was observed.
They were attentive, but they gave no ev
ulcnce of approval or displeasurr; there
was no applause, no laughter; tlieig was
not a smile; all was solemn stillness. Hill
lid his utmost to break the ice; he did
everything a clever comlian could do,
but in vain. Ho ilunir him4f against.
their rigiditv; it was no use. The audi-
etico was evidently on its bust Iwlmior
and the curtain emtio dow n at last amid
a silence oppressive and almost melan
choly. After the pkiy, HilJ, worn out
by his extra exertion and mortified by
hta want of success, wai poMaitig through
