In complying with his request, it has been discovered that prior to 1670 the records of tho U. S, Circuit and District courts had had been very loosely kept; that the minute books of the naturalization business show thousands of names whose nataralzation is void on account of not having been entered in the judgment book; and that hundreds hare been naturalized of whom there is no record whatever. All these persons will have to go through the proeea of naturaliza tion again before they can bo registered. II. B. Convention. Sxxzxucxzo, June 25. In England to-day the lines are as closely drawn as in earlier days, wilx reference to the mode of epistolary ad dress to a freeman and a gentleman. That ia. to say, the city or freemen of olden times, aad ia many cases now, is addressed as Mr., wkile the gentleman hs3 his came adorned with an Esqalre at the end. Woe be unto the writer of an epistle to n coo-city man who omits Esqaire. It is an evidence of the under bred or ignorant. Too may flatter a city rrn by giving him this ainx to his mm, bat would not oSend him by the prefix of amply Mr. . In the case of the con-city man being addressed by let ter as 3Ir., otTe&se is created. Yon wocM hardly think that this matter is dwelt, on so strongly in this age. It is ; and I know of cases of friendly relations being served by the application of trades men Mr. to the impeennioos "West End gentlemen who demands Esquire. In the plays of 3Iassinger I remtm ber nameroHS illustrations of this dis tinction. Yet, aa far as my reading oes, and I mest confess to a weakness in reading old boots and osd subjects, I can not recall a single evidence that the word freeman was not prior in ita creation to the word gentleman. Bat Mr, a eor- caption of master, aa employer of ap prentices ia trad, is aa after appellation of either. In the time of Richard ILL, "a city man wns a Mr., bat no gentle man,1 and to-day the distinction obtains more or less discriminate. At parties, dinner parties especially, yon will see the plain Mr. singled cat for the minor places, if he be oct cf the three liberal professions, divinity, law and physiryind if he be in trade. I remember oa one occasion a wealthy banker, now of feme cote as the sccces- - to a great American financier and philanthropist, whose bronze efngy is ia the shadow- of tae Royal r.Trhange, being given a secondary place at a dinner tame to a glowing uniformed captain in the navr who coald cot pat n penar side by side with every thousand pounds of the banker, and who had cot an equivalent proportion of brain or pedi gree, but who ranked the banker in his status by reason of his profession. One was a plain Mr., the other a titled cap tain. One vas a plain man, the other a gentleman. 2bt until you go into English soctetx thoronghly do you know how rigidly the lines are drawn in such weak trioes. Some say they arc becoming weaker and less. Others say the contrary. Of a rank so vague and so dirScult of a dear and concise definition as that of gentle man, comprising as well these "who have a superior specific station by birth and manners as those who, if they possess any at all, possess no other, & " very awkwatd how to determine a precise period of English society when the word originated. For ages after the Xcnnaa forays here you cannot find the word used"; and I "am at a loss to say when "tho fine old English gentlemen,' so rare, appeared first oa the soil. London Letter in Baltimore San. Horace Greeley's Shoe leather. Mr. Greeley rolled into the shoe makers store with that heavy, billowy sort of a gait he had. '''Sit down, Mr. Greeley," said the shoemaker. Greeley looked up with that broad, wondering, half-childlike look, and said, ((Whyl do you know- moF "Everybody knows yon, Mr. Greeley,'' was the reply. A comfortable-fitting shoe was tried on. "Xo, that's altogether too smalL" Then a shoo that was really too large, bat that, too, was not large enough; then a cloth shoe, so large that Mr. Greeley coald pat his hand in and arrange his stocking over his foot so as to fit huo. He was amazed at the contrast with Broadway prices, not seeing that there was a contrast with Broadway quality, bought several pairs all the man had, in fact and went away greatly delight ed, saying that he had a lot of shoes he would send around to be mended. Sure enough, a boy came in a tow moments with a small basketfuL The shoemaker pledges me his professional honor that thcro wcro cot two shoes alike in tho whole basket. Ho hurried around to Mr. Greeley a house and suggested that, as none of the shoes mated, it was of no uso to mend them. MWellJ,, said Mr. Greeley, with that confidential half whisper of his, Mthe fact is, I put 'era on just as they came along f And it is not difficult to believe that he did.
