Merry, editor ol the, Inland Empire, will be delivered at rendition this evening. Subject: The life, times and character of Daria C "Brodcilck. Admission 00 cents. Changed. As will be pcrcelred from glancing over this weet's Issue, from the tone, that oar senior has resigned and given up ihe editorial chair to his junior who Is now endeavoring to wield the quill to the best of his ability. The following little witty paragraph perhaps may contain the rhole of the insinuation necessary to pro nonnce upon glancing over this issue: A goose has many quills, but a man can make a goose of himself with only one quill But gire it for whet 'tis worth. Our senior has so much law business of late that it has become necessary Uf have a change nil around. Our senior passing ont and the junior partner taking one step higher to the editorial chair, thereby making a vacancy which Hr. C. E. Ball fills. This state of affairs trill exist for some two xreeks, whcn our senior will resume his editorial work, and the junior partner tak. ing a ramble through Grand Ronde valley perhaps In search of subscribers aad solic iting generally. Our Tnton county friends must expect to see cs among thca during court at that place, as we expect to remain among them something like two weeks. Washed Oct. Above town the bed of the river, at the ferd, we understand, is badly washed est, making it diScult for loaded teams to cross. This is something which ought to be attended to ere long, if we wish to respect onr wheat growers and traveling public Seme talk of having a bridge built; this is a good plan, for one is badly needed at this paint. Let ns have a bridge and do something to advance the interests of oar thriving little village. Kcar the bridge opposite taws, during the late freshet, a rVannd has been washed oat to the depth that it will be impossible for trans to ford, which win have to be done if the bridge is not looked after. By imme diately sizing this bridge the county will save doable, and probably treble, than it will to pay for some accident which may happen cpon thia bridge, besides having the bridge to fix. Straagc Cache. INDIAN "iCTAS" ASD SCALTS OT TWO WHITE MEN AND ONE WOXAN, AND THE BODIES OF TIIKKK INDIANS rOUND. From B. B. Bishop, who has jort returned from llcppncr, we learn that a yonng man by the name of Gilmore catno in a few dayi ago and reported finding an Indian cache near the month of John Day's river. A number of men then went with him to the place, opened the cache and found quite a number of Indian trinkets; two scalps of white men with short black hair and the scalp of a white woman with yellow or flaxen hair about eight or ten inches long. They then dng down a little deeper and re moved some pieces of board and found the bodies of three Indians, wrapped in blankets that were covered with blood. Where these Indians came from or how they canto to their death is a mystery. It is also a mys tery about the woman's scalp, aa no report has been made of the murder of any white woman daring the troubles for the last few years in this part of the country. The supposition is that the Indians were killed in the Willow Spring's fight In this county last summer, and that they were taken there and harried, and that these scalps, partlcu. larly the woman's was some they had had for several years. A strip of fur and a few other beaded fixings were foaed which Mr. Bishop has area upoa a certaia Indian in this place, several times. Too Bad, The Independent txn the "Old Philosopher" has sir eyes. Focn. Our ounty Jail contains four prisoners at the present time. Fine. TTe are having some fine weather. Hope It will continue. Too Bad. Twas actually a fact, the poor fellow had worn his nice whito shirt daring his hard day's work and had worn and torn It in teveral places just below the bosom, so much that 'twas useless to think about having it stitched. Upon going to his s'eep he tore it off and bid the remnants upon the little table at his bed-tide where he was in the habit of laying bis hanker. chief upon retiring. So mot it bo ; bat in getting up pretty early just before it was fairly light enough to see plainly, hedrcased, pat the piece of shirt tail in his bosom aid started for his breakfast. Sure enough and when he was eating and enjoying some fried eggs he had occasion to use hir bankcrchief, and not knowing the difference, took from liis bosom this piece; when lo. ell "Accidents will eventuate in families of most sublime integrity.'' Wells has been delivering the pictures he received in this county for rais ing, and they git c general satisfaction. With very few exceptions the copying is done to perfection and we pronounce it the very beat e have seen. The pictures are all put np in the very best style and are lifelike and an exact fac-simile of the original. Those desiring to have the pictures of themselves or friends copied and enlarged would do well to see Mr. Wells and gire him their or ders, for he guarantees satisfaction, and if any one is not pleased when the picture Is received he will return It to the house in Sas Francisco and get aay defects pointed oat remedied. If you have no picture go cet one taken and hare him get it copied or you. Weather. What can be the matter ; the weather has been meat delightful for the past week that lis a d&ealt task to remain indoors, but to sit outside and sun yourself. If this delightful weather cootinces, cer tainly we ought to hare some splendid crops this season, for we have had plenty of rain, and with this warm weather will certainly csose the wheat to spring np in an aitoo iahin: way. Our surroundin? hills have began to put cn a green coat, and cattle on all sides jumping about like lambs at play. 1th their tail curled heavenward over the good lock they hare had in coming out on the right side during the cold spell we had ben so many cithern "kicked tlie bucket. Church, who wis appointed to fill the place made vacant by the removal of II. K. Bines, gave us a pleasant call on Tuesday and we found him to be a very intelligent gentleman. We rather like a Methodist prearhcr that can sit down and discuss the prospects of the country, its mining inter Cfrts and future prosperity, without puttinr on a tomb tone countenance and heaving a deep groan ab every few minutes, and of such is Rer McMean. Merry, Esq., deliverd a lecture at the Dalles last week, and bis contemporary, Mr. Hand, editor of the Jfauntaineer, speaks in the highest terms of the same. The above named jour nal and the Inland Empire, both published at the Dallas, are the only two rival news papers which never threw mud at each other, a fact which cannot fail to elict ad. miration from the entire newspaper frater. nity. So mote it be. Soon. From Mr. Coffey, w&leam, he has come intentions of going into the mercantile and grocery business. Mr. Jones, an emigrant who anchored in the Cove, in Grand Ronde valley -during last winter, was arrested on a charge of the larceny of a horse, alleged to belong loan Indian Lc-Ions-kln. He was taken before Chief Justice Bailey, where he proved himself clear of the theft and was dis charged. Face Tjuec. Jake Barnes' pack train passed through town last Sunday en-roate for the "upper country," loaded with freight for a .Chinese firm. This reminds es of the food and prosperous times of long ago.
