The trUl of Capt. Baugltraan for the
killing or Pat Whalcu is oicr. It has
been the principal topic of conversation on
our stnvts since the commencement of the
court. Some ill Informed people had con-1
eluded that he, Baughaian was guilty, as
charged in tec indictment, never Hopped
to think that only one side of a case is ever
presented to a Grand Jury. The Jury
impaneled in the ease was among the
most prominent citizens of Umatilla
County. The State exhausted all their
chalangc in the case, while Bacghmau
chalcogrd very few, leaving margin of
five or six if he had wanted to avail him
self of technicalities. We arc satisfied
that the witnesses gave their testimony
fairly. Sometimes it svtmed as though
some would like to convict for vengoace,
instead that the rights and liberties of
