D. P. Thomp. j ton and others to the residents of the Upper Columbia valley is even more favorable to ; Ihe latter than teas at first supposed. -Mr. Thompson and his friends ask Eastern Ore gon and Eastern Washington to subscribe $150,000 of the capital stock of a company. To -which, they will add enough nvwey to build the portage railroads, warohoHsei ) es. The $150,000 stock is to Ikj 'i and wharves. paid Ia three installment the flr 0.000 ZZ'ZTZ when the track is graded ; the second $0.- n-n4ci T cnwtpclmcj A oaack oor 000 -when the road is tied; and the third (tr 4cU -nkh N. a prteiNmi; prda $50,000 when tht shipping receipts of the l.-on and rolling stock for the roads are j presented. AH the proceeds ot the cater prise, except $15,000 per year, arc to lie ; divided rateably among the stock-boWer of the company, including thtc ef the spe-, cial $150,000; so that the latter will be as much a part of the concern as any of the s-tock-boldcrs. Under these circttmstan. i ccs, and as the enterprise will probably j cost some $300,000 or more, the propesi- j lion of Mr. Thompson and others is ely a request that the people of the Upper Columbia basin, who will be so mock benefitted by the enterprise, join hemU half way and help to span the reeky passes of the Columbia. And if they fail to respond to this oCer. let them never strain pray for deliverance from Ike oppres sion of the soulless monopoly that new extorts from the profits of their las! Tbe gods help those who help themselves. Daily Ike. Tke New Yort "Timet." on the Oregon Election. New Yore, June 6. The Tima ia as editorial says: The election of a United States Senator in tri&cc of Mitchell will Ie j : vicvuA. luviCgUtJ. uwHwwBi n9 j own successor, and his friends were ralbcr , more intent on nominating candidates far the legislature who wonld vole for Mitchell ' than for candidates who weubl bnag ont the full Republican vote of their dtrtrict. r ..j. .. t i wiia a jjsaiocrauc uiiw.ui otu ami elected, ilitclicll somewhat osestati,y , identified himself with sebeeaes which ' were more obviously ia the islere of Jar Gould than of the state wheh be repre- sealed. Oregon having been ceapelied to choosebetween Mitchell asd aDe-t. has preferred tbe latter aheaatiee, and la the next senate there will be one Refbii-1 can less, because the party machine m Oregon was simply tofenber tbc emis of selfish and not over serafmlcw politi cal schemers. As if to ciephueee tbe les son taught by the struggle for the Itgi.la ; tore, the Republicans have elected their j candidates for governor, secretary of state and treasurer. A moral may possibly be found for the instractieB of tbe Republi can party of the state of New York, in what is at once a victory and a defeat tbr the party in Oregon. The Dcmueratte Governor is elected. Ed. Tfce Recent Election. At length we are able to give the T4e of the state. All the counties are fatty reported except Lake, and we have frets that country the official majorities. Wbit eakcr for congress has 2,170 majority. For governor Thayer has M raajorfcr- For secretary of state Earhart has 901 majority; ( Hirschfortreutxrerhasl,0G2nMjority; Car-; tor for printer has 437 majority and PeweM j for superintendent of public iastructfen has j 33 majority. The whole vote fo the ttetc. j when the fell returns from the Lake are j counted, will .187Cthe vote be just abont S100 In foe president, which wasi larger than any prcrious one, was as fo4- j lows: Hayes, 1500 Tilden, 14.140; Cooper, j C10,. Total, 23,665. j Personal and local considerations eaterod so largely into the recent election thet it caa hardly be said that there was a strict party vote on any office. Perhaps the vote for covernor was as near it as any. On comparison we find that lteekman vote is 803 greater than that thrown far Hayes, while the vote for Thayer is 1414 larger than that thrown for Tilden. These figures indicate that the Democrats have been gaining more than the Republicans by the immigration, or that the Republi- can vote was not called out 'so felly as the Democratic on this occasion. On strictly national issuse the Republican party usually does better than on local questions, lor the doublereason that its whole strength tkea comes out and there is less chance ; for irregulcr and independent voting. which Republicans invarlblr do much Hi ore than Democrats. Ortgonian. j The following is an extract from a com munication to the Standard from Salem, aad has about it a ring of fairness: "Kow, while this high trust is imposed ia tbe interests of all the Slate ami not anj section, it must be admitted that it rightly belongs to Eastern Oregon. It is a debt dnc Uie people of that section because cf their wants; and notmc will question that Democracy of Eastern Oregon haven right to same the United States Senator.
