jQlvlnqr a Joker. My Undo Eben was a grave old joker that is, he was always grave when ho joked, but ho could laugh, be sure. Aye when the laughing fit was fairly upon him, his ebullition was uproarious. Once upon a time a party of young stu dentsdivinity students were on a visit at Uncle Ellen's mansion; for he was a wealthy man, retired from commerce, and spending tbe evening of his days in lux urious ease and independence. Uncle John was Ebcu's younger brother, and a clergyman, and the students above spoken of were pursuing their theological studies with Her. John, and had come with him, by earnest invitation, to spend as long a time as they might choose at the mansion of "The Oaks," as Uncle Eben called his place. Very soon the hoit began to exhibit his joking propensities, and there were times when he carried the thing a little beyond the bounds of propriety. Never mind the hundred different ways in which, in the coarse of a couple of weeks, he con trived to get a laugh upon one or another, or upon all of his guests; nor did he spare his reverend brother. At length an opportunity of paying Uncle Eben off in his own coin o tiered of too tempting a character to be resisted. The party had been out upon, the lake fishing. Their boat was a broad, round bottomed gondola, large enough to car ry thirty persons comfortably, and pro pelled by sweeps. In her bottom, nearly amidships, was a large plug which could be removed to let water out when the boat had been pullt-d ashore, or by means of w"hich water could be let in should occasion require. "Well, on the occasion referred to, Uncle -ben and six of the students bad been out several hours, and if they had not caught many fish it was simply because the old joker had been full of fan and pranks all the time. As they approached the shore the wind was blowing quite fresh, and setting directly out. The old man was always the last one to leave the boat. The students had concocted their plan, and were readr for outline it into execution. They leaped from the boat as soon as her bow touched, taking the oars witn tnem, and the last one adroitly pulled out the plug, and as be landed he gave the boat a push that seat her away irom tne snore, and the strong wind wait ea tier tanner and iartner on witn con siderable speed. For a little time Uncle Eben's atten tion was directed to finding something witn wnicn to set the boat shoreward, but not a thing was at band. Presently a loud howl told that be had discovered the greater danger. The boat was filling rapidly with water. Of course the young rascals on shore made great show oranx ietv. They few around furiously: hal loed to their host, asking him what they could do to nelp turn; and nnally, wtien thev saw the old gondola almost ready to sink, two of them got a small skill off, and put out to -his rescue, reaching him, as they had evidently intended, just as he was floundering in the water, itii a mighty effort they got bis two hundred and thirty pounds avoirdupois into the skiff, and pulled for the shore, leaving tne gondola for others to fish up. The old man said not a word to inti mate that he was vexed, or that he held any suspicions of a practical joke. In rather a concerned manner, however, as though the greater danger was to come, fie said He Hoped tne involuntary bath wouldn't bring on his old fever and ague. As the party started for home, Uode .ten was really sad and melancholy. The fun had all died out of his rotund face, and his speech was sorrowful. Once or twice be seemed almost ready to err. The young men knew not what to make ol it. They wondered if it could be pot sible that their little joke had affected their host's well-being. They began to I eel uncosuortaule. At supper time Uncle Eben sent down and aaked to be excused. lie had no ap petite for eating. An hour later be came down into the great drawing-room, wrapped op in a blanket and a shawl, and lay down upon a sofa. The physi cian Had been sent for. At cine o'clock the old man was seized with convulsion, and bis bowlings and crossings were terrible to hear. If there had been any mystery in the matter, Un cle Eben .had whispered it to his wife at the outset, and she had caught the doctor ui uie uait, ana wmsperea it 10 aim. The doctor examined Ms patient, and loo iced grave and dubious. "The system has received a terrible shock 1 a dreadful shock T he said. And then be examined more critically. It is doubtful if ix mortals more pain fully unhappy and agonizingly regretful could be found anywhere than were those six theological jokers. They were pale and n us bed by turns, and tneir feelings grew more and more harrowing. At length, when they could endure their self-condemnation no longer, the; all sank down spon their knees by the side of the sofa whereon their host was gasp ing. "0, Uncle Eben 1 our friend and bene 1 actor 1 good, noble man! can you ever forgive us for the deed we didt O, we did not mean you ham Heaven knows itl O, do get wcill Can you forgive?" A brief space of silence, and then Un cle x.bea sat up. lie attempted to speak, but his feelings got the better of him and he burst burst into a laughter, loud, lone aad uproarious. At first the stu dents fearec it was a freak of insanity, but they quickly comprehended the truth comprehended that the old fellow bad been playing upon their emotions most outrageously, and that they bad been sold. uWelL young gentlemen," he said, when he could command his speech, "I'll forgive you on these conditions: You shall join me in drinking a cold-water toast to the man who had the last laugh and to-Borrow yoa shall lift the old gon dola aad bring her -to the shore." 1 &ey were lorgivcn. a. t- Jr- in Kew York Ledger. One day, at dinner, Gabriel took the liberty of calling Boseuuug saia -a great lee." "Dear Molly" he said, to the blue- yed damsel who fondly hoped, one of these days, to unite her life with his, why should we wait longer! Here we can get every tiling we want for furnish ing our bouse everything from cellar to attic for kitchen, parlor, lvedroom and hall and the amount to be paid down is a mere bagatelle. Molly read the advertisement read the poetry, and read about the trreat ings which Suckcrman was throw ing all about him, to be picked up and appropriated by those who were wise. "Hut," she suggested, "it has all got to be paid for at some time.1 . j you sec the amount we shall have to pay "Certainlv " said Charley; "but don't monthly will only amount to & sum equal to what a fair rental would be; and thus, in the end, we shall own the property all clear. I declare, Molly, it is a great thing. Just think of it; the furniture is really paying for itself. The use we shall get from it will be worth all we shall pay lor the hrst year; and that rent is buying the whole thing. Come, darling. let us go and see." Molly could not refuse that; so, on the following day, she went with her lover to the JJagie Jlonstrous rtever-failing All-containing Emporium of Suckermaa & Co. Things did not look exactly as Charley had expected to find them looking. There was a disagreeable smell of paint and benzine, and that all-prevading, nameless horror so ghostly and coffin- lite, which comes of sew, cheap varnish. And then things were not as cheap as he bad anticipated.
