The school board of New Orleans has decided that black and white children shall be educated in separate schools. One of the colored members advocated the separation, on the ground that it would tead to the benefit of his race. There are 1,900 schools in the Argen tine Republic, with 120,000 pupils. It is necessary to thin the herds out by capture, cither to tame or to kill. This leads to a grand hunt every year, in the dull season, when the ncc field, rapidly advancing to harvest, enable! numbers of the peasantry to be drawn off. At the appointed time vast numbers gather together to put up stockades, cut through toe jungle, in some part much frequented by the animals. Hie corral includes a stream, and is not cleared; trees and bushes are left in their natural state. The fence of the corral is made of trees ten or twelve inches in diameter, sunk three feet in the ground, lashed together by transverse beams, and supported by props. A corral will be five hundred feet long by two hundred and fifty broad. The corral completed, the natives spread around in a vast cir cle, aad begin cautiously narrowing in, keeping a close watch, and building fires at Tery short intervals, the elephants al ways retreating from fire. At sunset (sajs an eye-witness) the scene was of extraordinary interest; the low fires, which had apparently only smoldered in the sunlight, assumed their ruddy glow amidst the darkness, and threw their tinge over the groups col lected around them, while the smoke rose in eddies through the rich foliage of tbe trees. The crowds of spectators maintained profound silence, and not a sound was perceptible -beyond the hum of an insect. On a sudden the stillness was broken by the roll of a drum, fol lowed by a discharge of musketry. This was the signal for the renewed 'assault, and the hunters entered the circle with shouts and clamor; dry leaves and sticks were flung upon the watch-fires till tbey blazed aloft, and formed a line of flame on every side, except in the direction of the corral, which was studiously kept dark; and thither the terrified elephants betook themselves, followed by the yells and racket of their pursurer. The animals approsched at a rapid pace, trampling down the brushwood and crushing the dry branches; the leader emerged ia front of the corral, paused fur an instant, stared wildly round, and then nuhed headlong through the open gate, followed by the rest of the herd. As if by magic, the entire circuit of the corral, which to this moment bad beea kept in profound darksess, now blazed with a thousand lights, every hun ter on the instant that the elephants en tered rushing forward to the stockade with a torca kindled at the neatest watchfire. The elephants first dished to the very extremity of the ec closure, and being brought up by a powerful fence, started back to regain the gate, but found it closed. Their terror was sublime; they harried round the corral at a rapid pace, but saw it now girt by fire oa every aide; they attempted to force the stockade, but were driven back by the guards with spears aad Sambeaux; and on whichever aide they approached they were repulsed with shouts and discharges of musketry. Collecting into oae group, they would pause for a moment in apparent bewil derment, thea burst off ia another direc tion, as if h had suddenly occured to them to try some point which they rud before overlooked; but again repulsed, they slowly return to their forlorn resting-place in the centre of the corral. Tie Taiae of Plaek. It k this pluck, this bull-dog tenacity of purpose and stubbornness of persever ance, that wins the battles of life, whether fought in the field, in the mart, or in the forum. "It is the half-a-neck nearer that thorn the blood aad ic the race; the one march more that wins the campaign; five minutes more of un yielding courage that wins the fight." Hi lory abounds with instances of doubt ful battles or unexpected reverses trans formed by oae man's stubbornness in to eleveath-bour triumphs. It k opinion. ties, aad it k opinion that loses them. Ia the vocabulary of such men there k no seen word aa "fail." Impossibilities, so-called, tbey laugh to scorn. The Pcsch Writers. Loadon Society says tbe writers for Pu&eh were mostly foad of children. It was Thack eray's delight to "tip" boys. When Sid aey Blaacaard was a little fellow, oa oae of hk school holidays Thackeray fare him a dinner at tbo Garrick, took im to the theatre in the evening, aad enjoyed himself immensely in tbe delight of the boy. While it woul'd scarcely be just to say tht all the ga1p in the world is set aflont by woman, wo fear that she is pos H".ed by that demon to a much greater extent than man. If this gossip u al ways harmless the evil of tattling would be less. Unfortunately, however, this is not the case; not ouly are matters of but little consequence rolled under the tongue like a sweet morsel, but charac ter are torn to shreds, and circumstances thst should be covered over by tbo veil ef silence, arc ruthlessly exposed by the eajjcr gotslp. The more disgraceful the fV-n, U e heritor pleasure does the tat tler tale l.i its discussion, the more lArti .-t .a lieretTorUto discmtaate the ticking tidiujr. She knows no fear, and, alas 1 sue knows no mercy; she has got hold of something worth talking about, and she hugs it to ber heart as a treasure of great price. Thk eagerness to gossip about tbe af fairs of others is a terrible flaw in the character. Gotslp is rarely good-natured. She goes about with a poisoned dagger. She is the meanest goddess to wor.bip, because she is full of malice and unchan tableness. She strikes in the dark and knows as pity. Tbe Greeks represented the Harpies as women of frightful countenances, with serpents in their hair, aad holding the torch of discord. Were we to paint the gossips of society, tbe modern Harpies it is thus that we would portray them women of frightful countenances, with hisiing serpents twined ia their hair, and holding tbe torch of discord. In 1709, an diet was issued at St. Helena for the punishment of gossip. The ordinance was as follows : bereas, several idle, gossiping women make it their business to go from house to house, about thk bland, inventing and spread, ing false and scandalous reports of the good people thereof, and thereby sow discord aad debate among neighbor, and often between men and their wives, to tbe great grief and trouble of all good people, and to the utter extin guishing of all friendship, amity, aad good neighborhood; for the punishment and suppression whereof, and to the in tent that all strife may be ended, chatitv revived, and friendship continued, we do order that if any womaa from henceforth shall be convicted of tale-bearing, mischief-making, scolding, or any other no torious vices, tbey snail be punished by ducking or whipping, or such other pun- ivaiacoi u war crimes or iraasgrasioas shall deserve, or the governor ana coundl shall think fit." After so terrible a threat as this, no doubt the womea restrained their tongues, tranquility and peace were restored, aad the reign of goaVip was forever over at Sl Helena. If such a punishment as thk was inflicted uqon the gossips of New York, we fear that there would be ia the whole citv very few drr women. or womea wbofe tender shoulders did not ache from the effect of the merciless lob. AsteBt of Xoant Vesuvius. Not only k the cose very steep, but it is covered with ashes, so that one has no firm hold for hk feet, but sinks deep at every step. Thus be makes slow progress, and is soa out of breath. He can only keep on by going very slowly. I bad to stop every few minntes, aad throw myself down in toe asnea to rest. But with these little delay, I kept steadily mounting higher and higher. As we ccared the top, the presence of tbe volcano became xaaaifett, not merely from the dood, which always hanga about it, but by smoke issuing from many places at the side. It seemed as if tbe mountains were avast, smouldering beap, out of which the internal beat furcnl its way through every apwrtcre. Here aad there x loeg line of smoke seemed to indicate a sub terranean fisure or vein, through which the pent-up fires forced their way. As we creased these lines of smoke the sulphur ous fumes were stifling, especially when the wind blew tbea in our faces. But at last all difSculties were coaquereLnd we stood on tbe very top, and looked over the awful verge Into the crater. Those who have never seea a volcano are apt to picture it as a Ull peak, a slender cone like a sugar-loaf, wita a round aper ture at the top, like the chimney of a blast-furnace, out of which issues fire aad smoke. Something of thk indeed there k, but the actual scene k vastly greater aad grander. For, instead of a small, round opening, like the throat cf a cbim large enough for one flaming column, tbe crater is, 1 should think, nearly a mile across, and half a mile deep; and one looks down into a yawning 'gulf, a vast chasm in the mountain, wboe rocky aides are yellow with sulphur, and out of which the smoke ksues from diflerent pliees. At rimes it is impossible to see anything, as dense volumes of smoke roll upward, wbea the wind drives toward us, so that we are ourselves lost ia the cloud. Thea they drift away, and for an instant we can see far down into tbe bowels of the earth. The point where we stood projected over the crater. The great eruption three years since had torn away half the cose of the mountain, and now there hung above it a ledge, which seemed ready at any moment to break aad fall into the gulf below. As I stood oa that "perilous edge," oa tbe crum bling verge or a volcano, I seemed to be in the position of a human being exposed to dangers vast aad unseen, to powers which blind and smother aad destroy. As if aature would fix this lesson, by aa im age never to be forgotten, the sun, that was declining iu the west, suddenly bunt out of the cloud, and casting my owa shadow on the column of smoke that was rising from below. That shadowy form, standing in the air, now vanbhing, thea reappearing, with every flash of sunlight, seemed no inapt image of humaa life, a thing of shadow floating in a cloud, and hoveriog overaa abyss 1 Dr. Fidd.
