It is reported among the Indians oa the

The price at Salem is $10 per ton for
wheat and oat hay; $11 per ton forgaod
timothy, with an active demand at those f
prices. Oats are bringing 50 cents per
bushel, with none of the new crop yet In
the market.

In "Wisconsin they have some big saw.
mills. AtEan Claire a mill cut 183,000
feet in eleven hours. One-half the amount
was one-inch lumber, and the balance two
inch. A mill at Peshtig cut 1.000.C39 feet
in six days. Even belter work than this
has been done at some of the Michigan
mills. We believe no saw-mill on Puget
Sound has evr equalled the product of
the larger mills orMichigan, although pos
sessing an advasttne in logs.

earily operate, is a much greater source of
wealth, not only to patrons but to the com-
naaity in general, than is ordinarily sup. j
posed. There is nothing which more cor-
rectly tells the character and grade of a .
communiry, village or town than the local

they are unacquainted, call for the local
newspaper in preference to any other plan

paper. Some paper seem to say by their
appearaace, that their locality is healthy,
and rich in all the most important resour
ces; the purses of the people plentiously

things tending to draw capital as a magnet
attracts the needle; thus continually add
ing supports to mace the foundation of
their town eadurably solid. This the local
paper tells ia the number aad character or
patroBS, contributors, advertisers, eta, etc.
Other papers ia turn seem by the same
means to say that they are trying hard to
pull their very existence from the tight
purse strings f their more illiberal com
munities. The little one square advertise
ment says by its appearance that the under.

The Indian War.
The warnewa this week is really unlm
portant, except that Joseph, AVhiteblrd and
Looklngglass, witti near-100 warriors, have
left the recent scenes of war by the Lolo
trail, pasted into Bitter Root, Montana, and
probably by this time arc in British Colum
bia. Howard is now following the Indians
with the expectation that they will be cut
off by troops in Montana, and that then he
will attack them in the rear. The Indians
have two prisoners, an expressman and his
companion.

leaving this evening on a visit to Grand
Rosde valley, to counsel with the citizens
of that valley on the propriety of allow
ing the Indians of this reservation to go to
their usual place of fishing and drying
roots, I have one request to makt, if not
imposing too much upon your kindness.
I noticed some time ago an article in the
Portland Oregouian, charging me with us
ing threats to the Indians of the Columbia
river. In order to induce them upon this
reservation. These charges were made by
Mr. Kunric, of Umatilla Landing, and
published in the OrrgonUa of the 17th ot
last July. Mr. Kunzie well knew that I
denied these charges, and I think should
