In "Wisconsin they have some big saw. mills. AtEan Claire a mill cut 183,000 feet in eleven hours. One-half the amount was one-inch lumber, and the balance two inch. A mill at Peshtig cut 1.000.C39 feet in six days. Even belter work than this has been done at some of the Michigan mills. We believe no saw-mill on Puget Sound has evr equalled the product of the larger mills orMichigan, although pos sessing an advasttne in logs. r e nave waited patient for authentic information in regard to the alleged defal cation ot James Uendershott, Esq, while register or the State lands for theLaGraade district; but nothing reliable coming to hand we publish what we can learn. The liberal sustaining or a newfpaper, by the people in whose locality it Is pub lished and in whose interests it mustneces earily operate, is a much greater source of wealth, not only to patrons but to the com- naaity in general, than is ordinarily sup. j posed. There is nothing which more cor- rectly tells the character and grade of a . communiry, village or town than the local paper, x-rrsons aesmng icformation con- ccraing section, of country, with hlch j they are unacquainted, call for the local newspaper in preference to any other plan for procuring the hlstwy or the place. The ! eaterprise, liberty, wealth, etc, or I place ispcrtxsved in tlie txVctmIs ana general conamon or their local - , paper. Some paper seem to say by their appearaace, that their locality is healthy, and rich in all the most important resour ces; the purses of the people plentiously filled, eaterprise running high and all things tending to draw capital as a magnet attracts the needle; thus continually add ing supports to mace the foundation of their town eadurably solid. This the local paper tells ia the number aad character or patroBS, contributors, advertisers, eta, etc. Other papers ia turn seem by the same means to say that they are trying hard to pull their very existence from the tight purse strings f their more illiberal com munities. The little one square advertise ment says by its appearance that the under. a - - - - Kgnea is st jjgy, close fisted and Ukcs no A..l . o . a a rurther interest In ths enterprise of the place than to get all he can for as Rule as possible, and thus an impediment is placed is the way of progress, causing the place to wither like a plant shut out from the sun. light An occasional baptismal shower of telegraphic sews, editorial notes and locals exemplifies what might be dona with sufii. clest means, but this expensive work can not be kept up without prompt support, aad so tu paper is farced into correcpon desce with tlie enterprise of the place. A newspaper, like a child, wants support and fostering care in the beginning of its exktesce, so that when it can stand alone it Buy be able to bring credit upon the cesraanity ia which it is located. As 1 am leaving this evening on a visit to Grand Rosde valley, to counsel with the citizens of that valley on the propriety of allow ing the Indians of this reservation to go to their usual place of fishing and drying roots, I have one request to makt, if not imposing too much upon your kindness.
