At the Agency April 24, 1S77, oa the Uma. tilla reservation, Thomas Jeffuisox Hcb bakd departed this life aged 7S years. De ceased was horn in Kinderhoot, X- Y-; he emigrated to Oregon, then a wilderness, in 1S34, as gunsmith to the Pacific Fishinp and Fnr company of Boston, which located Fort William a short distance below the month of the Willamette river, where his relations with the company continued until it disposed of its interests to the Hudson Bay Company. From thence he removed to the mouth of the Yamhill rirer, where he opened a farm, the same now being owned by Hedorum Crawford. After which he resided at several different places in "Western Oregon. He was Tcry promi. sent in the organization of the provisional government in lS3,nd occupied a respon sible and honorable position tlrwetn. He erected the first saw-mill south of the Co. lumbia in Oregon. After the discovery of gold in California he built a small Tessel at Oregon City of a few tons carrying capa city, and loaded it with flour for Califor. rtia. He succeeded in reaching his destin ation. That was the firt vessel leaving Oregon with produce for California after the discovery of gold. He was alj-o one of a company which first imported cattle to Oregon, there being none in the "wikl do main" except a few head owned by the Hudson Bay Company. Deceased remov ed to .Eastern Oregon in 1S57 and located cn Birch creek where he has since resided. The toil and energy of deceased daring bis life began to effect his once robust form five years ago. About suusonths since he -was attacked with dropsy, and was rein o v. ed to the residence of Indian Arent X. A Cornoyer, a relative of his on the reserva. tion, where remained till his death un der the careful nursing of the Major's fam ily. Dr. McKay, physician to the Indians on the reserve, took charge of deceased and succeeded in keeping life in him to as late a period as possible. Deceased was a gen- erous, whole-souled man, caring more for friends than himself. Indomitable energy and good physical powers enabled him to accomplish much that ordinary men wostd not undertake. TLe funeral took place Thursday, tbe 23th. Rev. Crowes! officia ted. At the Fendletoa cemetery, where de ceased was buried. Dr. McKay was request ed to make a few remarks on the life ef "Uncle Tommy Hubbard,' which he did in a feeling manner. UncleTommy is now enjoying that rest "across the river, which lias awaited him so long. Change of Location. Col. H. C Paige, heretofore general traveling agent for W. F. & Co.'s Express, has resigned that hon. ruble position and accepted the agency at Baker city, where he will hereafter reside; ihe Colonel is tired of traveling and wants to set down to a steady, office business and live at home with his excellent wife and little ones. Mr. P. has traveled all over the Pacific coast, has resided in nearly every portion of it; for years he has been a resident of Western Oregon, and his final judgment (and we all know he is a man of good sound discretion) is that the bes t por tion of all that great Pacific coast is East ern Oregon and countries adjacent thereto. He prefers the clear, bright, bracing and healthful atmosphere of this portion of t)regos to the humid" and rheumatic air of Western Oregon. We welcome the Colonel to the country where he naturally belongs. A.2CEwSrBrxa. County Clerk Sharon owses a tract of ICO acres of land just be low Pendleton, and resides therern on a plateaa. The only water to supply his Mock efcx, besides the Umatilla river, hac bees taken from a deep well. About a aoaUi since a younger son, while looking for stock oa the hills north of his father's residence, discovered about a qrarter of a mile distant therefrom, a splendid sprifig of water. Mr. Sharon visited tbe sjHit immediately, and where here tofore it had been as dry as a powder-horn is s apposed to be, was as the son had re ported, a copious spring of pure and whole some water. Since the discovery the vol ume of water has sot abated one jot. 3Ir. Sharon has raised the price of his farm Just $1,000 oa account of this discovery. He can convey the water to his residence with but little expense. Messrs. Layman and Sanford, Professors of hydrostatics, proved themselves success ful is the line of their profession in the coestruciion of a water wheel for inlga tiag purposes at the tnoutli of Bycrs' tail race; which really is a feat or hydrostatic CBgiijccriBg worthy ol great praise.
