T SoMctbinsr About Caves. A Greek Weddiusr. But a few houis' run up through the wild sccnerv of Harper's Ferry, thence through the beautiful valley of tho Shen andoah, brings us to Weyer 's CUve, sit uate I in Augusta county, Virginia, on the new valley branch of th B. & O. It. IL That ono of the most renmkable caverns at present kuown, should be within but a few h jure' ride of us, and so little known bv our s;j;ht-sccing city folks, is truly almost as astonishing as the lack of enterprise displayed by iw owners in not bringing it before the pub lic If some of our live Yankee brother had hold of it, they would not be slow in realizing handsome dividends on small capital invested in a little judicious ad vertising, etc A half-hour drive from the depot, over a delightful country road, brings u to the bottel, a comfortable brick building, situated at tho northern extremity of a ridge running parallel to, and about four miles from, Ste Blue Ridge Mountains. The cntrAnec to the cave is in the eistt m side of the ridge, the western declivity of which is very gradual, ana me vimhk- ap nrnachin? from that direction little iov agines that it embowels one of nature's masterpieces. The eastern declivity if, however, ouite nrccitritous. WVvM-'a Cave, for its extent and vari ety, the regularity of its -tabu t tic C.H1 cretions. tho disposition f its festooning, the fauUitic displays .f it ilrsp ry, the sublimity and giandeur -f is a nery, i not surpassed by a lyihinjj iu nature. Fingal's Cve iuS car ebrated for the number and regularity of its basaltic column, lacks variety. The famed Mam moth Cave in Kentucky is remarkable only for its dimensions. The natural bridge and falls of Niagara are snblime snectacles. and aff.ird the bhlder tao orthree varied views, but "VVeyer' Cave presents to the riveted gaze of the en raptured visitor a thousand. In going fiom the hotel to the entrance yoa pass Madison's Cave, in the same xidge, and only three hundred yards from it. Madison's Cave was known aad vis ited as a cqriosity long before the dis covery of "Weyer's, bnt it is now paei by and neglected, leing unworthy of notice, compared with its more imposing rival. "Weyer's Cave was discovered in 1S04 by one Bernard Weyer, who ranged there hills asahenter. "While pursuing his dailv vocations, be found his match in a . lawless ground-hog, which not only eluded his efiirts, bnt succeeded in car rying off his trap. Weyer had an attack upon the domicile ot the depredator with spade and mattock. A few mo ments' labor brought him to the ante chamber of this stupendous cavern, where he found his trap deposited. The en trance was originally small and difficult of access; bnt the enterprise of thepro- iirietor has obviated these inconveniences At a distance of twenty-four feet from the entrance yon reach the Staiua-y Chamber, so called from a number of italazmitcs which bear resemblance to statofes. Immediately above is an open-, ing or considerable bcaaty called the Gallery. Leaving this room through a high b"nt uairow passage, with little dif ficulty yon enter Solomon's Temple, one of the finest in the cave. It is irregular in shape, running at right angles to the main course of the cave. As you raise jour eyes after descending an inclined pathway to the floor of this roam, they rest rpon an elevated seat, surrounded by starry incrustations which sparkle in the light of your candles. This has been aptly styled Solomon's Throne. On the right is a wave-like folding of incrusta tions from the ceiling t' the floor, re s mbling a waterfall, called the Cataract; and a figure of a man in the act of leap- ing, called Sam Patch. At the cistern exrremitj is a beautiful pillar of white stalactite also named fr the wise man. Passing S do.-non's Pillar. ru enter another room, more irregular, but still Brnre beautiful. To convey a correct idea of the beauty of th:s tcene is beyond the power of description; we shall therefore merely observe that the ceiling, which is variegated and brilliant, is thickly stuJded with stalac tites resembling pointed shell, and is called the Shell Rxta. As this is not the sain passage through the care, we retain, and ascend a flight of steps to the Por ter's Lodge; thence under a swinging gallery to the Pantheon. Here are a number of stalagmites resembling heathen deities, and the Madonna, aad other fan cied resemblances to birds and beasts. Prom the Pantheon two passages run off to the left, the first one to a large, irreg ular room, called the Lawyer's Office, in which is a fine spring, or rather reservoir of water collected dropping from the rod"; the other through a paage to wliat is called the Armory, from an in crustation that lias received the name ol Ajai's Shield. Between the Lawyer's Office and the Araory, and cflBsautiicating with LoUt, is another large, irregular apartment, which is named Weyer's Hall, for thcai coverer of the cave, who, together with Ids dog, stand immortalized in nee cor- ner. We now return fe the Pan the in, and proceed along the main passage to Twialtotm. Here are scvctal pairs of stalagmites called tlu Twins. . Thi SDarUseut is em -til, but lite crvstalization is perfect to the surface of the stalactite coBcretioBS that form tits ceiling. Wert from the Twin Room is a room which contains many beauties. Farther along, firom a different position, affording a " rnatrnificeut view, is the Cathedral. Here are representations of the bishop, tin desk, the bishop's seat, and a variety of buze columns and pillars iving in con fa sioa over the floor. A c nunuation of this room, at an elevation of ten feet, is the Drum Iloom, named from a thin sta lactic partition extending from the ceil ing to the floar, and which emits by a gentle tap a deep tone like a bau-drum. Yoa scxt reach the Ball Room, one hundred feet long, and thirty-sir wide by twenty-five high, running at right angles to tlie path by which you entered it. The gj&ei at bearing of this room is north-cast .and ayufh-west, hot at the nerthera ex trewity there is a gradual ascent bearing round to the east until you reach a preci pice of twenty feet, rora which you can look back down into the Tapestry Room, having performed a perfect circuit. Xear tb! cintrc of the Ball Iloom is a large calcareous deposit that has received the same of Paganini's Statue, from the cir cesetancc, we suppose, that it furnishes a geod position fur the music when balls are gives is these subinundaoe reg'onH. The floor la sufficiently level to admit of daaciag os it, and it Is not uncommon for visitors to have dancing in litis place . To approach this apartment while a party of ladies and gentlemen are taking a turn at the "Boston," while thrilling music resoeads through lite hall, produces upon ifee curious risitor a singular effect; it Worries the imagination back to the en chMted caverns of the fabled Aladdin, where fairy prince and princes,in mirth ful glee. inpt the light fantastic toe." I was fortunate enough to be in Pa- Iras on the occasion of a Greek wedding, which is an interesting and peculiar ceremony. Weddings amongst me Grecxs are for the most part soieinnixea in the evening and at home, and ftora the nature rf the rill raujt be very trying t the pcrsws principally concerned. A small table i placed in the center of the room, on ono side of which stinds the bride and the unilegtooin, oacu ifi'imp a lone ILdred caudle, on the opttOiite side the officiating priests. Behind the former the be.t man takes his place; he has an important part ti fill in the cere- many, and Is ranked as a relation irom the time of the marrisie. The roun is of course brilliantly lighted, anl the numerous guests throng as closely as thev can towards the center in order to cain a Itctur view. Many prayers a-c chanted by tho priests and a-sittants, uiiiutclltihle even to the ctr of a classi cal scholar, with the exception of the often-repeated "Kyrie cleison," which forms K pr.imlnent a part in ahno-t every Grcvk service. There is a vcrf elab orate ritual the signtfg of the bride and bridesr o on the forehead three times with the 11 . the blessinir. two wreaths. which ats afterward plared on their heads bv the best maa, and at the latter part of fie nte, interchanged over anu .ver acin, the drinking of wine three times Ir m the same cup, tin kissing bj tMth of the office lak and of ths priest's hand who has made them one, and finally The Canary a Preacher. The bird shops arc always a curious sight, and some curious people keep thum uoually kindly old Germans, who havo become so used t handling tenderly the delicate little creatures, lint It is doubt ful whfthcr they could I harh and rough if they trird.
