a iD f ((IjllullU SATURDAY PEB. 24. 1ST AVc send greeting to our readers that no one as yet knows who Is PnIdcnt. Artesian Wells. Artesian wills, so called from Artels, a province in France where they were first used, are simply deep borings through rocks and strata of different kinds of oarth in order to reach a supply of water. This boring is done by means of rods from 15 to 20 feet in length, constructed with a boring fiparatus or auger t one end ami a lever attached to the other or upper end, wlikli is generally turned by hand jwwer, and inuch rcscirblcs the boring with a lncclwa lcs' common auger. The rods are so con. 6tructcd that by means of male awl female screws, they can be stoutly connected, and 4he boring continued to any depth. Tae famous well oT Grcnellc in Paris is of this kind. The frequent interruptions caused by accident together with the obstructions met in the prosecution of the work, kept the contractors atwork fur about eight .years before their efforts were crowned with success. Although water Iwas reached at the great depth of 1S0G feet below the nr- face and about 1700 feet below the lcvd-ef the sea, it now comes up with such'forceas lo rise 30 feet above tbo'snrfacc in one con tinuous stream, iu consequence of being fed by the hills of Champagne which are much higher than Paris. ThcyicMoflhis well is estimated to be GCW.O00 gallonsof soft water daily. An artesian well was sunk in Kentucky sal Louisville, in the year 1S5S, to the depth ofS,0SC feet, which yields over 300.000 gal. Ions of mineral water daily through a tar. ins onb" 13 inches in diameter. The pres sure is sufficient to raise to raise the water in the form of a jet 170 feet above the sur. face. Belcher's well in St. Leais is 2,110 feet xJecp. The depth of ike tboring aad the height of the jet in artesian wells are con. trolled by circumstances ; the height of the jet will be in ratio with the height of the feeding or supplying reservoir, and the xkpth of the boring will correspond to the distance of the impervious stratum uadcr. lying the channel. The cases here men tioned are among the nsot extraordinary. In a country, situated as Eastern Oregon, surrounded by chains of lofty mount a, aud, over the immense and boaotifel slopes cf which, creeks arc known to sink is places and to re-appoar fartkeroH in their cosrse, would seem only to reqnirc as ef fort to make the whole concur a perfect garden spot. "When artesian weH digging is once begun (which will tnrdr be at Be dL-tint futnrx-) then our hh and rich taWe j jio aau uiviucs win ue caavened into productive fields and rich meadows. In connection with this very important subject we append the snbstance of a letter written by Dr. La Dow of Astasia te Jerry Dcspaxn of this place : Mr. George, a civilfoBgineer, "who bos been engaged for the last number of years in drilling and boring in the oil regions of Pennsylvania, informs me that with (the present perfected machinery there is so for mation of rock on earth that cannot be pea. ctratcd to the depth of 8,000 feet.
