OOMMUWIOATIOIfS. t. . Pw rh -T c, -- Mx. Kditoi : In the editorial remarks in number twelve of the Spectator, under the title of ''Indian names," somo nig. gestions are made in reference to the pro priety of having some uniform standard for the orthography of Indian names, which I most heartily approve, Hefore I give my views on this subject and upon other kindred matter, suffer mo to say that, having been a resident of this nun try for nearly ten yean, 1 have, in com. mon with many 01 the early settlers of this country, witnessed the great diversity in orthography of which ou speak. In many instances of which thero appears to be manifest departure from the correct principle of language, and I have often thought that a uniformity in this matter would bo a great desideratum. It seems to me that the only correct position we can take in spelling any name or word be. longing to a foreign unwritten language, is this, viz: 1st, to spell the namoor word exactly as the nati es pronounce the same (unless thero bo somo manifest barbarism in said pronunciation); anil second, to spell it in the most unambiguous manner possible, using no redundant letters and using no idiom peculiar either to our own or any other language. If the above prin ciples be correct, thero has been (to sav tho least) a most unhappy departure from Itv which prevails. And I know of no better method to correct that which need remedy, than to call public attention to tho tamo through tho press, hoping that our best educated men will soon settle down Into a correct uniformity in lite or thography of Indian names.
